Sorondo and Taison give Tite concern for Coritiba

As the dust settles after last nights eventful 1-1 draw, club doctor Carlos Poisl will today be paying close attention to both Gonzalo Sorondo and Taison. Taison was replaced in the second half following complaints of a muscular injury whilst Sorondo, in his first game back from injury complained of feel pain in his left knee.

Whilst it is thought Taison should be available for next Sunday's match against Coritiba, the clubs medical staff are unsure of Sorondo's availability.

One player how is certain to miss Coritiba's visit to Beira-Rio is goalkeeper Renan as he now misses out through suspension. Renan has said that he will speak to the media later today to discuss last night's events where he was harshly given a red card.

Finally, thank you to those who voted in the recent Gre-Nal poll. Unfortunately 72% of you were incorrect as you predicted an Inter win with 15% correctly predicting the draw. 12% voted for Grêmio! As you can see there is now a new poll running so please vote once again!

8ª Rodada round up

Following Inter’s controversial draw with Grêmio last night, the Colorado’s move up to 14th position in the Brasileiro. The draw was Inter’s first point away from home and the much improved performance will give Inter confidence in winning next weekend as 10th place Coritiba visit the Beira-Rio.

Tite: “We were in control of the game”

In the press conference following the Gre-Nal, Tite praised the attitude of his side who managed to frustrate Grêmio for most of the game. Whilst refusing to comment on the controversial sending off of goalkeeper Renan, Tite demanded that Inter now show the same level of performance in next weekend’s game with Coritiba.

”The team looked balanced and our game plan was to try and counter attack with Taison and Nilmar whenever we had possession. Our team was compact and we didn’t allow them many chances,” explained Tite. When asked about Taison’s role in the team he commented, “He was key to the speed of our counter attacks and he allowed Alex to have freedom.”

With Inter now looking to climb up the table Tite spoke of the clubs poor position in the table, “It concerns me because the size of a club like Internacional requires a better position than this, we approached today’s game with the aim of getting three points and we will also approach the game with Coritiba the same way.”

Meanwhile Inter’s captain, Edinho spoke of his disappointment of Renan’s sending off, “The result was unjust. The goalkeeper needs protection when it comes out to catch a high ball, the decision was very harsh.” He also added that he was pleased with the performance of the team and that it has given Inter a positive rhythm to take into the next few games.

Inter president Vitório Píffero spoke of his disappointment with the decision angrily claiming, “In 40 years of football I have never seen a penalty decision such as this given. The play had stopped and Renan had the ball in his hands."

Renan red card costs Inter victory in Clássico

A marked improvement from last weeks defeat saw Inter look set to win the first Gre-Nal of 2008 until Renan's late sending off gifted Grêmio a late equaliser to ensure a 1-1 draw.

Young midfielder Taison was handed a surprise start by Tite in the Inter line up ahead of Gil and Adriano. In a scrappy start Sorondo was booked after just 7 minutes as both teams failed to settle. Inter silenced the Olímpico when Índio (15) headed in after Grêmio failed to deal with Nilmar following a free kick to give Inter an early lead. Right back Ricardo Lopes was harshly given a yellow card as Grêmio tried to force some pressure on Inter. Grêmio coach Celso Roth could only watch on whilst each attack broke down whilst Tite paced up and down the touchline ordering and encouraging his team. Inter began to frustrate the home side as they restricted Grêmio to long range efforts as whilst Taison’s pace threatened on the break as the first half came to a close.

Inter began the second half in a similar pattern to the first as Taison was released early one, and his pass to Alex was hit wide of the post. Grêmio continued to show any creativity and Inter’s pace up front continued to cause the Grêmio defence problems. Taison who picked up an injury was replaced by left back Ramon. Grêmio then began to pressure Inter but the Colorado defence remained solid as they dealt with a number of corners. With 20 minutes remaining it was again Nilmar whose pace caused problems for the home side as he released the ball through to Ramon who’s shot beat the goalkeeper but hit the crossbar. Minutes later it was Gremio who threatened to score as Perea’s header was ruled out when the linesman flagged for offside. Then on 76 mins chaos erupted when Gremio were awarded a penalty and Renan was sent off as he raised his foot to Rafael Carioca as he collected the ball. Clemer replaced Ricardo Lopes and he haplessly watched Roger (83) score the penalty. Ten-man Inter pushed for a second goal but the game fizzled out with little play in the 5 minutes added time.

Build up continues - Inter analysis

With only one thing being discussed across the city of Porto Alegre the hype continues as the Gre-Nal nears. With kick off at 18:10 Porto Alegre time, (22:10 UK/GMT) we are now just a few hours away from one of the most competitive and passionate derbies in South America – the 370th clássico between Grêmio and Internacional at Grêmio’s home, Estádio Olímpico Monumental.

Inter’s main concerns going into the game will be the defence. The back four of Bustos, Índio, Orozco and Marcão struggled last weekend and both of Vitória’s goals came from long, aerial balls into the box which should’ve been dealt with by Inter. Tite is able to make two changes to the defence for tonight with powerful centre back Sorondo and right back Ricardo Lopes replacing the Colombian pair of Bustos and Orozco. Tite is also likely to change goalkeeper with experienced Clemer stepping down for young Renan. Renan returns to the side after missing out last week’s match as he was training with the Brazilian Olympic squad. Observers who watch Inter train at Beira-Rio noticed how Inter practiced dealing with long passes and defensive organisation and if Inter are to win tonight, there will need to be a huge improvement from last weekend’s defensive performance.

The midfield is again another key area for Inter tonight as they too underperformed against Vitória. With the midfield looking tired and flat when Inter were chasing the game last week, attacking midfielder Alex will really need to be on top of his game to provide opportunities for Inter’s strikers. Magrão who is yet to appear in the clássico has spoken to the media throughout the week and appears very, very motivated. Whilst he will need to be brave and determined he will also have to be weary of becoming too caught in the emotion of the Gre-Nal and risk getting a red card. Arguably the most important job in the midfield tonight however, will be that of the defensive midfielder and captain, Edinho. Throughout this week’s training sessions Edinho has been give a tight marking role which will be used to stop Grêmio’s most creative talent, Roger. Inter will find it very difficult to win the match if Roger is allowed to play. A positive from last week’s poor performance would have been the substitute appearance of young midfielder Taison. His presence on the field in Salvador lifted Inter’s who performance and it was no coincidence they scored shortly after he came on. He injected life into the tired looking midfield and whilst some think he should start the match tonight, he is more likely to be named on the bench. If Inter do find themselves struggling in midfield then I certainly expect to see Tite using him.

Another major talking point of the current side is the striker force. Nilmar returned from injury last weekend and looked fit and also managed to score. Nilmar is without doubt the team’s best striker but it still remains to be seen who will partner him up front. Tite experimented with both Gill and Adriano but it was Gill who lined up alongside Nilmar against Vitoria. Although Gill’s performance was very average last week and replaced at half time, it is likely he will again be selected tonight ahead of the pacey Adriano. With many of Tite’s critics commenting about his use of Inter’s junior players so far, it remains to be seen if powerful 19 year old striker Walter will be among those on the bench. Having impressed whenever he has played in the team many would like to see the young given an opportunity. Whether Tite decides that the Gre-Nal is the right time for this remains to be seen.

Grêmio V Inter

With hype all week in Porto Alegre and also here on the blog , the Gre-Nal is now finally upon us as Inter look to gain their first points away from home following four successive away defeats, in round 7 / 7ª rodada of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Inter’s suspension and injury crisis has now eased allowing Tite to make three changes to the team. Ricardo Lopes and Gonzalo Sorondo replace Bustos and Orozco in defence, whilst Renan is recalled to the side to replace fellow goalkeeper Clemer following a spell with the Brazilian Olympic squad. Tite must once again decided whether Gil or Adriano will partner Nilmar up front and exciting young midfielder Taison is expected to start on the bench. Inter will be hoping that current form does not count for today’s derby as Grêmio are undefeated at home at currently joint top of the Brasileiro. Grêmio have won their last three games and midfielder Roger will be Inter’s biggest threat.

There will be updates throughout the day as build up of the clássico continues. Feel free to add your comments and views of the first Gre-Nal of 2008!

Probable line up: Renan; Ricardo Lopes, Indio, Sorondo and Marcão; Edinho, Guiñazu, Magrão and Alex; Gil (Adriano) and Nilmar.

Other results/fixtures: (Sat) Vasco 4-2 Ipatinga, Vitória 3-0 Goiás, Portuguesa 0-0 Santos (Sun) Atlético-PR v Coritiba, Cruzeiro v São Paulo, Sport v Flamengo, Fluminense v Botafogo, Palmeiras v Náutico

Countdown to Gre-Nal – 1 day to go

With one day left to until the big game, things have been put into perspective as news has broke which confirmed the deaths of two Internacional fans in the city of São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul. Jeferson Alves Ferreira just 21 and Gabriel Eloi de Oliveira only 23 were both attacked and and shot by who police believe to be Grêmio fans in the built up to the derby. The motive of the attack is thought to be purely football related.

Whilst we celebrate the Gre-Nal, football means absolutely nothing when two young lives are lost. I'm sure you will all agree with me when I say that I hope there are no further incidents this weekend to taint what is such a wonderful occassion for both Internacional and Grêmio.

Even from Wales, my thoughts are with the families of both Jeferson and Gabriel.

Moving on to a more positive note, Tite has named 26 players who will go into ‘concentration’. This is when the squad stay together to prepare themselves before game. Usually the coach names between 19 and 20 names (the team and subs) but Tite has named a larger squad for the Gre-Nal. “It is not a strategy to confuse our opponents. It is to show the importance to everybody so we can all focus for the game”, Tite commented.

Meanwhile Tite has also been pleased with Inter’s defence this week in training, particularly when dealing with aerial balls which were poorly dealt with in last Sundays defeat. In training Inter have worked hard at dealing with crosses and long passes into the box and Tite stated that he was pleased with what he had seen and that the defence were improving.

Full team news ahead of the game will follow shortly.

Bolívar confirms Inter deal!

Fullback Bolívar confirmed this morning that he will be joining his former club Internacional on a one year loan deal from French club Monaco according to Brazilian website terra.com.

Bolívar is a popular player at the Beira Rio as he was part of the Copa Libertadores winning side in 2006 and the defender will be a huge boast to Inter’s struggling defence. The news of the signing arrives at a good ttime for Inter as fellow defender Sidnei is to leave the club early next week. It is understood that an official announcement will not take place until after this weekends Gre-Nal this Sunday.

Meanwhile reports also suggest that Inter are now very close to making a second signing who is widely expected to be the ex-Corinthians attacking midfielder Rosinei, who is currently with Real Murcia in Spain.

Countdown to Gre-Nal – 2 days to go

Magrão, Sorondo and Ricardo Lopes ready for Gre-Nal debuts
As the weekend approaches and the Porto Alegre derby nears, the players discuss with the media what will arguebly be their biggest game of the season. Inter have three first-team players who are have not featured in a Gre-Nal. Magrão, Sorondo and Ricardo Lopes could all make their first Gre-Nal appearances on Sunday if selected.

Despite not having participated in the Gre-Nal, midfielder Magrão is highly enthuiastic about the game having had expereince of competing in the main derby of São Paulo between Palmeiras and his former club Corinthians as well as the Corinthians derbies against São Paulo where he scored a total of five goals. Magrao who missed last years Gre-Nal through suspension said, “On Sunday I will be extremley motivated.”

Experienced centre back Sorondo is another key player yet to feature for Inter in a derby as he watched on last year from the bench as an unused sub. Despite having played for Inter Milan, Sorondo did not play in the Milan derby and he considers the biggest derby he has played in as the Danubio – Defensor Sporting derby of Uruguay.

Finally right back Ricardo Lopes is the third play yet to play in the derby. He explained, “Who never dreamt of playing in a Gre-Nal? The expectation is massive. The derby is everything a player could want.”

Nilmar ready for old friend Roger

“Gre-Nal is a special game, therefore it demands special attention. We are aware of all the details and are preparing mentally for the confrontation”, confirmed star striker Nilmar who is Inter’s leading scorer in the Brasileirão with three goals. Possibly Inter’s biggest thread on Sunday will come from Gremio’s attacking midfielder Roger. Tite has identified Roger to his squad as being Inter’s main threat and it is Roger who is a close of friend of Nilmer. Nilmer explained, “Our friendship started when we played for a year together at Corinthians, but now we both are on oppoisite sides. Roger will be difficult to stop as he has alot of qualitiy but we have to be very aware of him because I think he is an intelligent player.”

The book is on the table

This is a new feature which I hope to include in the blog from time to time. It will be about my perspective of how I view events at the club from rainy Wales. I’ve decided to call the feature ‘The book is on the table’ which was one of the first messages posted on the blog, left by a non-English speaking Brazilian! These are views of a non-Portuguese speaking, non-Brazilian about the famous red club from Porto Alegre. Being a long distance away from the club and living in a different football culture, plus the problem of language and information getting lost in translation, means that you may not always agree with the my views. Whatever you think, agree or disagree, feel free to post your opinions and comments!

Tite must be given time

As Sunday’s visit to the Estádio Olympico approaches, Internacional enter the game having lost each of away games so far this season in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The club find themselves languishing in the lower reaches of the table with just seven points from seven games. Meanwhile across the city, the eternal rivals share first place in the table having put together an impressive start following their disappointing Campeonato Gaúcho campaign and confident at the prospect of facing their rivals in front of their fans.

This weekend the population of Porto Alegre takes a deep breath as Gre-Nal fever descends on the city. Inter are under pressure. The club are expected to forget the loss of talismanic captain Fernandão whose Colorado heart and soul was born to play in the Gre-Nal, forget their disappointing away record, forget the appalling defensive performance showing last week against Vitória and show a vastly improved team performance in order to beat top of the table Grêmio in their own home. It might be easy to forget that this of course, is still only the third game for the clubs new coach- Tite, who’s main objective this year is allow the club to compete in the Copa Libertadores next year (the club’s centenary) by finishing in the top four of the Brasileiro.

From Porto Alegre to Manchester to Rome, derbies all around the world have one thing in common – previous form does not matter. Flair, technique and ability are needed in order to win most games but the derby has a different set of requirements. Heart, soul, bravery and determination are the successful ingredients to winning any derby and this is where can Inter have their chance of winning the first Gre-Nal of 2008.

As Tite prepares the squad at Beira Rio this week, the coach knows he leads a club who are lacking self belief and are without a true leader. He watches on as one of the squad’s best defenders trains alone. Sidnei, just 18 years old is the latest of Inter’s players to be sold as he seeks fame and riches in Europe. Meanwhile on Wednesday afternoon, the cameras flashed amongst a scurry of microphone as the clubs captain, one of it’s greatest ever players, Fernandão held a final press conference as he departs for Qatar. The departure of the club’s captain Fernandão becomes symbolic and represents the sun set of a golden era for the club which peaked in 2006 when Inter were crowned champions of South America as Fernandão lifted the Copa Libertadores.

Of that 2006 Libertadores winning side, only two players now remain in the current squad- left footed midfielder Alex whose knack of scoring goals makes him a key player in the team and Indio, a strong and experienced centre back. Alex this week has become the subject of a move to Spain and many have noticed a decline in his performances and suggest he is seeking a move. Whilst in recent matches Indio has become are a shadow of his former self and his poor performance last weekend was a key factor in Inter losing 2-1.

Since joining Internacional just over two weeks ago, Tite has taken over a squad which has been ravaged by both injury and suspension. Tite has been forced to make several changes for each of his first two games and is set to make further changes again for Gre-Nal. How Tite is supposed to work on improving the defence with such changes being forced upon him is nearly impossible. Tite is also expected to inject confidence and self belief into the Inter squad but with no real leader at the club and a poor run of results it is again difficult to see how Tite can do anything immediately. These things can only be grown into a team and will take time to nurture and only then can Inter bloom.

Throughout the last two weeks Inter have been linked with several names as they look to add reinforcements to the squad. Ricardo Oliveira, Andre Lima, Rosinei, Ramon, Bolivar and even Rafael Sobis have been mentioned with a return to the club. However, none of these, as of yet have emerged as Inter players.

As well as nurture and develop the current squad, Tite is needed to also help the new arrivals settle into the club and develop. This does not always happen straight away and can take time. Many Colorado’s are concerned that Tite doesn’t use the ‘juniors’. Inter have a very successful youth set up with already three or four names being mentioned as exciting young players ready for the Inter squad. Just last week, young attacking midfielder Taison came onto the field late in the game and injected life into a tired and flat looking Inter side. Inter scored almost immediately after Taison came on and there are many calls that he should be used more regularly by Tite, even as a replacement for Alex. Walter (powerful striker), Tales (pacey midfielder) are two others who Tite is being urged to use by some Colorado’s.

Despite the talent that these young players have, Tite must be careful. Who knows the damage it could cause to a young player’s development when he is exposed to a confidence lacking Inter side who are reliant on a 18 year old. The young players may occasionally enter the field as a substitute and play well but to play from the 1st minute to the 90th minute of a game can be very different. The pressure and expectation placed upon the Inter’s players ahead of Gre-Nal is incredible, even too much for experienced players. Who knows how an inexperienced young player would react? Tite must do all of these things, yes but he cannot do them in three or four matches. He must take time to ensure everything is done gradually and correctly otherwise the effects could be even worse for Internacional.

Countdown to Gre-Nal – 3 days to go

Today we look at Inter’s record Gre-Nal victory back when the ‘Rolo Compressor’ side of the 1930’s dominated.

One of the most significant achievements of the legendary squad called "Rolo Compressor" was the largest Inter victory in a Gre-Nal. In 1938, Internacional won the game by an impressive 6x0 scoreline. In addition, the referee ruled out other 5 Colorado goals, saying that "It was too many goals for a Gre-Nal", making it impossible to match the record Gre-Nal score of 10x0 by Grêmio, when both teams met by the first time in 1909.

Ten years later, a hair-slicked Argentinean commanded a 7x0 score in a Gre-Nal that has never been beaten. Vilalba also scored 4 goals in the match.

Inter's form began on previous Gre-Nal. Grêmio, protesting against the referee, put a mix of substitutes and the original line-up for the second fixture. The Rolo had lost some of their players but still managed to keep important players like Ivo, Nena, Abigail, Tesourinha and Carlitos (in photo). It would be really hard for Grêmio to withstand "the Rolo's” firepower, let alone their substitutes.

Sidnei trains separately and will not play again for Inter / Sidnei treina em separado e não deve mais defender o Inter

Investment group, Gestifute will confirm next Monday the new club of centre back Sidnei according to Zero Hora. Sidnei trained separately as the squad continued their preparations for Gre-Nal at the Beira-Rio yesterday afternoon.

Sidnei was due to return from suspension for this weekends Gre-Nal is no longer available to Tite as vice president Giovanni Luigi felt that the deal would affect the players concentration ahead of the derby. Sidnei who has now played his last game for Inter, has been sold to the portuguese investment group who are in turn selling his registration to an unnamed European club. The transfer should secure Inter €6 million. Some of that figure could now be spent on securing the loan of former defender Bolivar who is being heavily linked with a return to Inter from Monaco.

The departure of Sidnei will now give another product from the Inter youth set up an opportunity with the full squad. Centre back Danny Morais has signed a contract extension at Beiro-Rio until 2013. Danny Morais has appeared in the Dubai Cup and the Campeonato Gauchão.

Meanwhile, Fernandão visited Beira-Rio yesterday to finalize details of his transfer to Al-Gharafa of Qatar. Fernandão who has a legendary status a the club, scored the 1000 goal in Gre-Nal and is unable to compete in Sunday's Gre-Nal as Al-Gharafa want to present the player as soon as possible.

André Lima to join São Paulo

Inter target André Lima has rejected a move to Beira-Rio and has decided to join São Paulo reports today's Paulista newspaper 'Folha de São Paulo'.

The striker who has been linked heavily with a move to Inter from Hertha Berlin is said to have agreed a one year contract at the Morumbi and will join up with the São Paulo squad shortly. The news will come as bad news to Internacional as they are becoming increasingly frustrated in their efforts to add reinforcements to the squad.

Another player recently linked with a move to Inter has also joined a Paulista club today, former defender Fabiano Eller completed his transfer to struggling Santos.

André Lima's new club São Paulo, currently occupy 6th place in the Campeonato Brasiliero.

Inter target former fullback Bolívar

Today's edition of the Porto Alegre newspaper, Correrio do Povo reports that Internacional are close to announcing the shock return of fullback Bolívar. The right back became one of the highlights of the team during the famous Copa Libertadores success in 2006.

At present, the player is contracted to French club, Monaco who have had a disappointing season. It is now thought that 27 year old Bolívar will return to the Beira-Rio on a 12 month loan. The arrival of Bolívar would help to fill the gap left by the sale of Sidnei, which is set to be confirmed by the end of the month and would also go a long way to appeasing the Colorado's who continue to mourn the loss of Fernandao as well as the forthcoming departures of Alex and Sidnei. Many Colorado's are also disappointed at the clubs start in the Campeonato Brasilerio where Inter currently have just 7 points from 7 games.
Inter have only recently purchased a new right back, Ângelo who is yet to play for the club as his registration will not clear until July so the siging of Bolívar will ask questions about Ângelo's future at the club.

Countdown to Gre-Nal - 4 days to go

Sorondo ready for Gre-Nal battle

Inter's preparation for the Gre-Nal began with a long discussion between Tite and his players yesterday afternoon. Before the afternoon training session, Tite told the group that he demanded more concentration and determination. Centre-back, Índio openly spoke to Zero Hora about the disappointement of last Sunday's game against Vitoria, "I've been here for three years and Inter were always respected for it's strong defence, I don't remember conceeding goals like those in Bahia, due to lack of attention. We messed it up, that's the truth".

The return to the side of Uruguayan Gonzalo Sorondo will be a timely boost as he returns to fitness following injury. "I am ready, I do not feel any more pain in my knee", confirmed the experienced centre back to Zero Hora. Sorondo is certain to replace Orozco for the game whilst it remains to be seen whether he will partner Indio or Sidnei at the heart of the defence.

Fired up Magrão reacts to training criticisim

During the training session there was almost an uneasy silence as the players worked. When asked about a possible bad mood within the training session Magrão reacted, "If we talk to each other and laugh, you would say something like we are not giving a damn'. If we don't talk at all, it's because we're too quiet. This is called concentration."

Gre-Nal goodbyes for Alex and Sidnei

The Gre-Nal is likely to signal the end of the Internacional careers for both Alex and Sidnei. Alex is to join Espanyol for €10M and Sidnei is being sold to the portuguese investment group, Gestifutefor a sum of €5M. Centre back Sidnei is just 18 years old and is set for a transfer to a major European club with A.C Milan a possible desination for him. Alex meanwhile is likely to move to Spain to fufill his ambition of playing in Europe once Inter have negoiated the terms of his transfer. The departure of the two would mean Inter, who are already have a relatively healthy state of finances would be richer to the sum of around R$38M (€15M) and would certainly strengthen the clubs budget as they seek to add around three new players to the squad. As well as having targeted a number of European based Brazilians, Inter continue to search throughout the transfer markets in neighnouring Uruguay and Argentina.

Hertha accept Inter offer / Tite set to reshuffle defence

Hertha Berlin have today accepted a loan offer for striker André Lima. The ex-Botafoguense who is ocurrently on holiday in Rio de Janeiro confirmed that he had received an offer from Internacional which is being studied by his advisor.

André Lima will join for one year if he decides to accept Inter’s offer. Inter however face a fight for the 23 year old’s signature as São Paulo have also made an offer for the player who must now decided where his future lies. When asked about the interest he had received André Lima commented, “I am extremely proud, I know very well that they are two great clubs.”

Meanwhile, Tite is expected to ring changes following Sunday’s much criticized defensive performance. Colombian pair Orozco and Busto are likely to be left out whilst Sidnei and the experienced Gonzalo Sorondo are expected to return to the side. Indio is likely to revert to right back whilst Marcão will play at left back. Ricardo Lopes is becomes available for the Gre-Nal but it is thought Indio is the preferential choice. The left back slot continues to be a problem for Inter as they seek reinforcements so Marcão looks set to continue in the role.
Who do you think should Tite play in defence for Gre-Nal? Should Ricardo Lopes be recalled? let me know your views.

Espanyol target Alex

Another of Inter's key players could be set to leave the club it has been revealed in today's edition of Zero Hora as Inter negotiate the transfer of attacking midfielder Alex.

Espanyol have offered Inter €8 million (R$20m) for the 26 year old but Inter president Vitorio Piffero is thought to be demanding €10 millions (around R$ 26m) for the player. Alex has become a key player at the Beira-Rio since joining the club in 2004 and has made 5 appearances so far in the Campeonato Brasileiro scoring 1 goal.

His departure would be another blow as the club attempt to recover from the loss of captain Fernandão and Iarley. The departure of the two, has secured the club financially so Internacional are in a position to refuse the offer. The loss of another key player would no doubt hinder Tite's attempts to improve Inter's position in the Brasileiro following a disappointing start to the competition.

Alex is not the only Internacional player catching the attention of European clubs as A.C Milan, Lazio and Villareal are said to be closely monitoring 18 year old defender, Sidnei.

Rafael Sóbis wins blog poll!

In our first ever poll, Rafael Sóbis was voted as the player who would most be welcome at Inter. A clear majority of 82% (347 people) voted for the former Colorado as transfer speculation linked the popular striker with a return to the club last week. Zaragoza striker, Ricardo Oliveira who continues to be linked with a move to Inter was voted second.

Final results: Rafael Sóbis 347 votes (82%), Ricardo Oliveira 46 votes (10%), Wason Rentería 23 votes (5%) and Ramón 7 votes (1%).

Thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to vote on the new Gre-Nal poll!

Countdown to Gre-Nal. 5 days to go!

Gre-Nal 1997

As we continue the build up towards the clássico on Sunday, today we look back to Inter's Campeonato Gaucho triumph in 1997. The Gaucho final saw the two historic rivals meet at the Beira-Rio in what was described to me by one Colorado as 'my first real Gre-Nal'.

"If you see the geography around Beira-Rio, there's a hill in front of it. On the hill there are streets which are used as parking lots. You pay a few bucks to some guys who take care of your car and then you go down the hill towards Beira-Rio, these guys are usually called 'flanelinhas'. That day me, my brother, my father, my stepmother and my stepbrother got out of the car carrying huge packs of heavy clothing to warm ourselves there in the stadium. It was August I think, really cold, especially when you are in Beira-Rio, near the river bank, windy and stuff. Then, whilst we were going down the streets we suddenly saw a bunch of policemen mounted on horses. They came after us screaming, "rápido porra!!! que a raça tá descendo por aqui / quick goddam'it! Raça is coming!" (Raça = Super Raça Gremista SRG, The most popular and crowded ultras from Gremio at that time!) We started running like hell, and all our pillows and blankets almost fell out of our hands. Then when we arrived at the main avenue, we saw that Camisa 12 was coming from our right towards Beira-Rio, so we found ourselves in the 'war zone'! The police created a barrier in front of raça, for them to wait for Camisa 12 to go past but it was useless, because they started throwing stones on each other. At that time we were inside the complex but we couldn't enter certain gates because the place was already overpopulated! So me, my family and a handful of people started running around the complex trying to find open gates like retards. The game was about to start and we couldn't manage to find a single opened gate, it was a total mess! We then managed to enter but as we had dropped most of our blankets and warm clothing I started to complain as I felt very cold. Without thinking twice my father, handed me a little bit of Campari, transferred to a plastic bottle."
Flavio Bonfiglio (11 years old at the time).

Tite recieves Sidnei boost.

Meanwhile, Inter have been boosted ahead of Gre-Nal by the return of goalkeeper Renan and defenders Ricardo Lopes, Sorondo and Sidnei. Sidnei yesterday saw his suspension overturned by the STJD (Brazilian Code of Justiça Desportiva) and will be keen to impress as the club continue to negotiate his rights with a Portuguese investment group with Italian giants A.C Milan rumoured to be watching the young centre back.

The news of the return of these players will undoubtedly be well received by Tite as Inter defended poorly in Sunday's 2-1 defeat.

Finally, stats favour Inter ahead of the 370th Gre-Nal, Gremio have 9 players who have not played in the derby before whilst Inter have just 3.

Please comment and let me know your Gre-Nal experiences or feel free to send me any pictures or Gre-Nal related stuff!

Countdown to Gre-Nal - 6 days to go!

Gre-Nal 1989

To celebrate this weekends Gre-Nal I'd like to know about your experiences of the Clássico! Throughout the week the blog will have all the latest news ahead of the big game. Today we feature the famous derby of 1989- "My favourite grenal is the "grenal of the century", in 1989 (this title is because the winner qualify for the final of the Brazilian Championship). We were losing 1 X 0 and, playing almost all the time with 10 players (one of them earned a red card), we won for 2 X 1. It was the most important "grenal" of all time." - Gelson Luiz Walther

The build up the Clássico begins today as city's newspaper Zero Hora speaks to some of Inter's players ahead of Sunday.

Experienced goalkeeper Clemer says that the side will be difficult to beat ahead of the game and reassured the fans that the performance in the Gre-Nal will be entirely different. Meanwhile Alex comments, " the defeat to Vitoria was like a bucket of cold water which allowed the team to wake up. We would prefer to be in a different situation approaching this game but we have a week to work which is good."

One positive note to come from yesterdays defeat however was the performance of young midfielder Taison. Considered as one of the new talents coming through at Beira-Rio, Taison could hold the key to Inter's success. He told Zero Hora, "Now we have the Clássico approaching. We cannot dwell on the defeat.".

Tite plans for quick improvement

As Inter’s disappointing away form continued last night with a 2-1 defeat to Vitória, Tite acknowledged that the team had played poorly. “We were disappointing, particularly when defending. The improvement is going to happen quickly”, commented Tite. He added that he was aware of the difficulties that face the team currently as it is in transition, and was concerned about difficulty the defence had dealing the high balls and the positioning of the fullbacks. Tite also spoke of his disappointment with the amount of times the ball had been given away aimlessly allowing Vitoria to counter attack.

Tite must now act fast. In round 8, Inter make the short trip to the Olympico as they still seek their first point away from home. With Grêmio sharing first place in the Brasileiro, Tite admitted that his team would need to work hard in preparation of the Gre-Nal. “I am conscious of the greatness of the derby, we need to prepare and work hard on the field and mentally."

Inter exposed by defensive frailties as Colorado prepare for Gre-Nal

Tite suffered his first defeat as Inter slip to defeat as they prepare for next weeks Gre-Nal. Inter’s defensive frailties were apparent as Inter gave away two soft goals in the first half. Tite made one surprise to his team as it was Gill and not Adriano who partnered Nilmar up front.

Inter could of taken an early lead when Nilmar headed over from close range but it was Vitória who would score first. Following a defensive mix up Marquinhos (17) scored on the counter attack to give the home side the lead at the Estádio Barradão. Inter almost responded immediately when Magrão saw his 20 yard shot pushed away by the Vitória goalkeeper. Unfortunately for Inter, Vitória doubled their lead as confusion between Ozorco and Indio allowed Willian’s (31) to put the ball past Clemer.

Tite made changes during the interval by replacing Gill with Adriano. However Inter failed to create any clear chances until shortly after Taison replaced Edinho. Marcão broke down the left and crossed for Nilmar (67) to head in. Moments later Inter almost leveled following Taison’s pass, Adriano found himself through on goal as a Vitória defender made a last ditch challenge. Inter found themselves lifted by the goal and pressured Vitória as the threatened to equalize but could not break down the Vitória’s resistant defence. In the final minutes Vitoria almost scored again but twice the post rescued Inter as Clemer could only watch on.

Well what a first week it has been for the blog! Iconic captain Fernandão unexpectedly leaving the club, Tite formerly of Grêmio being announced as Inter's new coach and the club being linked with several names including Rafael Sobis, Danilo, André Lima, Ricardo Oliveira and even according to some reports yesterday, Ronaldinho! On top of all this Inter won last weekend against Botafogo and later on today play Vitória. THEN there is the matter of Gre-Nal which takes place next Sunday.

Nilmar and Adriano to attack with pace in the absence of Fernandão / Nilmar e Adriano querem usar a velocidade para suprir falta de Fernandão

As Inter prepare in Bahia for tomorrow's game, Zero Hora today looks at Tite's new strike partnership- Nilmar and Adriano. Despite having had little time to train and similar playing styles Nilmar and Adriano are both high on confidence ahead of the match. Adriano who will wear the number 9 shirt commented, "He has given everyone confidence. With the arrival of the coach we are more confident."

Vitória V Inter

Internacional travel to north eastern city Salvador on Sunday where they face Vitória in round 7/ 7ª rodada of the Brasileiro.

A good performance is vital for Inter as they prepare for next week’s Gre-Nal. Vitória who occupy 10th spot in the championship have not conceded a goal in four matches and are likely to be difficult opponents for Inter.

Tite must make changes from last Sunday’s side as suspensions continue to ravage the squad. Experienced goal keeper Clemer will play as will important midfielder Alex. However, the main story of the week is the return to fitness of striker Nilmar who is set to play. Tite has decided to recall Adriano who came off the bench and scored against Botafogo in his first game in charge.

Other fixtures: (Sat) Cruzeiro v Figueirense, Botafogo v Portuguesa, São Paulo v Sport, Coritiba v Fluminense (Sun) Vasco v Palmeiras, Ipatinga v Flamengo, Santos v Goiás, Náutico v Atlético-MG, Grêmio v Atlético-PR

Feel free to post your predications for Sundays game and any other comments you wish to make!

Hertha demand €2.5 million for André Lima

Internacional's hopes of signing André Lima took a turn today as his club Hertha Berlin have demanded a fee of €2.5 million . It is thought that the German club will allow André Lima to leave as he currently occupies a limited non-European spot at the club but only if another meets their valuation of the player. São Paulo are also said to be interested in the midfielder which could mean Inter losing out on their target.

André Lima commented, "Hertha own my registration but I occupy a foreigner vacancy which the club feel is not in their interests. Hertha have an expensive valuation of me and all I can say is that I want the situation decided as fast as possible."

André Lima is currently on holiday in Rio de Janeiro and he will play for the Rio de Janeiro select side this weekend against the Olympic squad which will ironically feature Inter goalkeeper Renan.

Adriano earns the number 9 shirt of Fernandão / Adriano ganha a camisa 9 de Fernandão e segue titular

Zero Hora today reports despite the persistant talk of new signings which is surrounding the club at the moment, it is an old acquaintance who has been given the responsibility of wearing the number 9 shirt. Adriano marked Tite’s first game with a goal last Sunday and the coach has repaid his faith in the striker by giving Adriano the responsibility of wearing the shirt of Fernandão, one of the greatest idols in the history of Inter.

Adriano arrived at the club initally on loan from Paraná based club, ADAP in 2006 but has found his opportunities of an extended run in the team limited. However, with the recent exits of Iarley and Fernandão, Tite has decided to put his faith in the 26 year old striker who will partner Nilmar up front this Sunday against Vitória. Adriano has said that he does not feel under pressure by wearing the shirt of former captain Fernandão adding, “If I do half as much as Fernadão did here then I will be satisfied”.

Zero Hora also reports today that after his first week in charge of Inter, Tite has already been praised by his players. Experienced trio Clemer, Alex and Marcão have given their support to Tite after what has been a chaotic first week for the new coach. Tite had little time to prepare his squad for his first game against Botafogo and admitted that he had slept little in the days approaching the game, “Only after the game I could take a deep breath. Everything happened so fast. I spent nights deeply thinking about the teams.”.

Meanwhile media speculation continues as Inter look to make three new signings. The latest name to be heavily linked with the club is Rosinei, a 25 year old attacking midfielder from Spanish club Real Murcia. Despite media claims that he is one of the preferred names it is thought that his wage demands are not within the clubs wage structure. The two latest additions to the media’s neverending list of names are midfielders Fernandinho and Jádson, both of the Shaktar Donetsk. Technical director Fernado Carvarlho is said to be an admirer of the two but both are thought to be on high wages with long contracts so it remains to be seen whether they are realistic targets for Inter.

Blog in Zero Hora!

Just a quick update to inform you that the blog appears today in Porto Alegre's biggest selling newspaper Zero Hora!

Thankyou to Fabiano da Silva Cardoso who apparently wrote the letter to the paper. You can visit the link here-

Nilmar set to start against Vitória.

Tite gave an indication of the team he will select for Sunday when he played Nilmar in practice sessions yesterday in training. Nilmar who returned this week from a thigh injury has recovered quicker than expected.

It was thought that star striker Nilmar would not start the match against Vitória as a precaution for next weeks Gre-Nal but in yesterdays practice session Nilmar was partnered by fellow strikers, Adriano and then Guto. Adriano who came off the bench to score the winner against Botafogo last week is also likely to be recalled to the starting line up.

Probable team- Clemer, Bustos, Marcao, Indio, Ozorco, Edinho(c), Guiñazu, Magrao, Alex, Nilmer, Adriano.

What do you think the team will be against Vitória? What is your prediction? Let me know your comments!

Inter delay possible transfer announcement.

Speaking this afternoon to Bandeirantes Radio, Inter vice president Giovanni Luigi announced that any forthcoming transfer announcement will now be made early next week. Reports earlier today suggested that André Lima would complete his transfer to the club today but this latest announcement has now led to speculation that the club faces opposition from Sao Paulo for the Hertha Berlin's player.

Luigi confirmed that contract talks with an unnamed player are at an advanced stage adding that 95% of the names being linked by the media are incorrect. Luigi also revealed that Inter have been unable to identify a potential new left back.

Happy Birthday / Feliz Aniversário!!

This blog will always be about Inter and nothing else but today I will make an exception.

Today is the birthday of my good Colorado friend Lauro Strazzabosco Dorneles (Bosco).

Today he is the grand old age of 34! He is a great Colorado and he helped me to learn about the club and culture of the Colorado's enormously when I first began to learn of Internacional.

So if any of you know him be sure to buy him a beer!

A meeting today will confirm the signing of André Lima, ex-Botafogo / Reunião hoje pode definir contratação de André Lima, ex-Botafogo.

Ex-Botafogo midfielder André Lima becomes closer to being an Internacional player today as he his transfer is expected to be confirmed later today.

Speaking to Radio Gaucho today André Lima currently of Hertha Berlin explained, "My agent has prohibited me to comment about Inter's interest. I am unable to discuss the negotiations. The only thing that I can say is that today or tomorrow I will meet with my representative myself to confirm where I go."

Alex available for Vitória.

The CBJD have declared that Alex is no longer suspended confirming he will now be available for round 7 of the Brasileiro. The return of the goal scoring attacking midfielder Alex, will be a huge boost to Internacional who travel to Bahia with an suspension ravaged squad. Tite is set to make several changes with several first team players unavailable. Alex along with Clemer, Bustos, Orozco and Adriano are all likely to be named in the team against Vitória. Tite must also decide whether to include Nilmar to the team. Nilmar completed two full training sessions yesterday without any reaction to his thigh injury.

Meanwhile recent signing Ângelo will be available from July. The right back will be available once his registration clears.

One question I would like to ask, is what are Inter's travel preparations for a game like this? Porto Alegre - Salvador is a long distance so surely it will have an impact on time for training and fatigue? Do they fly a few days before the game and train for a few days there or fly closer to the game? I would be interested to know what happens so please let me know! Thanks.

André Lima hints at Inter move.

Hertha Berlin striker André Lima is the latest in a long list of names to be linked with a move to Internacional. Rádio Bandeirantes reports that the 23 year old is aware of Inter’s interest and that he would like to play for the club adding that his wages would suitable for Inter. It is thought that André Lima has now been forbidden by his club to publicly discuss a possible return to Brazil as rumours persist over his future. André Lima joined Hertha Berlin last year from Botafogo where he was considered as an idol by their supporters.

Meanwhile Inter's 20 year old striker Wellington, who is on to Pernambucano based club Náutico is set to for a move to Italy. Both Reggina and Siena have sent representives to Brazil to negotiate the player's transfer.

Ramón close to Inter deal?

CSKA Moscow attacking midfielder Ramón is thought to be close to agreeing a 3 year contract with Internacional. Renowned for his passing ability, Ramón could join up with his new club in August where he will be reunited with his previous coach Tite. Tite was the coach when Ramón first appeared in the Atlético Mineiro team.

Another name being linked with Inter, is ex-Gremista Michel Bastos. 24 year old Bastos can play at left back or in midfield and is currently with French club Lille. Bastos was a member of Grêmio team which was relegated in 2004.

Good morning Reds! / Bom Dia Colorado!

This morning there is quite a lot of news for what is a busy time at the club. First of all, ‘Inter is going to fine the wages of those who are suspended’ / ‘Inter estuda punir os expulsos com multa salarial’, reads today’s Correio Povo. The story is referring to Tite’s concerns regarding the clubs poor disciplinary record this season. Tite said, “The sendings off are a serious problem, it cannot continue as it will affect the results of the team”. In his first game in charge against Botafogo last weekend, Inter managed to win although they were put under intense pressure following Sidnei’s red card. Previous coach Abel Braga encouraged his players to argue with the referee but Tite has rejected this idea. Tite will now fine those who needlessly get suspended.

Zero Hora also confirms the news that experienced goalkeeper Clemer has signed a new contract, committing himself to the club until the end of 2009. The 39 year old has made almost 400 appearances for Inter and his popularity is set to continue into the clubs centenary.

Meanwhile, the popular website Globo Esporte reports, “Club to announce new signing this week / Clube anuncia contratação esta semana”. With the club set to announce the first of three new signings technical director Fernando Carvalho revealed that an official announcement will be made by the end of the week but refused to reveal the player in question. Carvalho did however, confirm that the player will not be an attacker. It now seems increasingly likely that the play will be a defender, probably a left back. This now seems to rule out the likes of Danilo, Rafael Sobis, Cléber Santana, Rafael Sobis, Ramon, Fabiano Eller and Ricardo Oliveira who have all been linked with the a move to Inter in recent days.

With news expected of a new signing Globo Esporte also reports that there could be another shock departure from Inter. Argentine midfielder Guiñazu is being linked with a reunion with former coach Abel Braga who is currently in charge of U.A.E based Al-Jazira. Guiñazu who is loved by the Colorado’s for his work rate is a key player at Inter. Having recently lost captain Fernandão, Fernando Carvalho confirmed that the club will reject any offers for the 29 year old adding that there is no way he will be sold.
Meanwhile, Nilmar will resume to full training later this morning after succesfully completing a physical workout yesterday.
As always your comments are welcome! Who do you think the new signing is? Let me know! Feel free to email me any news at matbur59@hotmail.com

Agent rules out Inter transfer target.

Hopes of signing attacking midfielder Danilo appear to have deteriorated as any move by Inter to sign the player would be rejected claimed his agent.

Reports have linked the ex Sao Paulo player with a return to Brazil with Inter but Gilmar Rinaldi who represents Danilo explained, “At the moment, I do not believe that the possibility exists. He is very settled in Kashima and the club want him to stay.”

Inter try for Fabiano Eller and Danilo / Clube tenta Fabiano Eller e Danilo

Two more names have been linked with a move to Beira-Rio as today’s Zero Hora reports.

Danilo is thought to be seeking a return to Brazil after two seasons with Japanese club Kashima Anters. Danilo is an attacking midfielder and is considered to be both an experienced and talented. The 29 year old had a successful spell with his previous club in Brazil, São Paulo where he won the FIFA World Club Cup, Copa Libertadores and Brasileirão. If he joins Inter he will leave Japan having recently won the league title there too. Ironically, Danilo began his career at Goiás, the same club as Fernandão whom he could be set to replace.

The second name being mentioned today is former central defender/zagueiro Fabiano Eller. The 30 year old played for Inter as the club collected Copa Libertadores and World Club Cup titles and would be a popular signing. He left Inter to join Atletico Madrid
in 2007 where he is now out of contract and surplus to requirements.

Nilmar to give Inter huge boost ahead of Gre-Nal.

Tite has been given a huge boost ahead of the forthcoming Gre-Nal as star striker Nilmar returns to fitness following a thigh injury. Nilmar is expected to undergo a rigorous physical work out in training today. It is hoped that Nilmar will be 100% fit for the all important clash with the clubs eternal rivals, Grêmio on 29th June.

Tite and the clubs medical staff must now decided whether to risk Nilmar for Sundays match against Vitória or whether to rest the striker to allow him to fully regain his fitness for Gre-Nal a week later.

I would really like to celebrate the blog’s first Gre-Nal in the days approaching the big match! If you have any Gre-Nal related news, pictures (Saci and Mosqueteiro) or anything else please email matbur59@hotmail.com

Beira-Rio departure likely for fallen idol.

Chiquinho’s time at Internacional is set to end as the left back continues to be ignored for selection. Chiquinho showed big promise when breaking into the first team in 2003. He quickly became an idol at Beira-Rio with some solid performances and goal scoring exploits in Gre-Nal’s. In recent times, Chiquinho’s Inter career has turned sour as he has been continually ignored for selection and has been training alone.

Tite’s arrival at the club had given Chiquinho hope of a new opportunity to break into the team but his hopes have been ended when former club president and now technical director Fernando Carvalho clearly stated that Chiquinho would not considered for selection despite the arrival of Tite.

Rumours about Chiquinho’s exclusion from the team persist and it is thought that the club’s constant rejection is not purely a technical decision as they have issues regarding the player’s professionalism.

Marcão praises Tite's start.

Experienced defender Marcão has praised Inter’s new coach Tite. Marcão spoke of Tite’s motivational skills adding that Tite has already revived the spirit within the squad.

“In the two days before the game against Botafogo, his words to us were very important. Then, along with the victory, our confidence increased. We are on the right track but we now need to put together a run of wins to put everyone at ease. Then the coach can put across his ideas.

About the exits of the experienced Iarley and Fernandão, the defender spoke with frankness, “They have left a gap in the squad and we will need reinforcements. The season is long and we will lose players along the way so we need a strong squad. We know we need to work hard and any new additions to the club will be well received and hopefully they’ll settle in as quickly as possible."

Ângelo’s Inter debut remains in doubt.

Ângelo’s Internacional debut is remains in doubt following his transfer last week from Paraná. The CBF are involved in solving issues with the highly rated right back’s registration which also involves another club Adap/Galo. Tite now has a selection headache for next weekend’s game with Vitória as fellow right back Ricardo Lopes is suspended.

Inter missing at least five players for Vitória game.

Tite will be without at least five players as they travel to Vitória next Sunday as the club prepare for the all important GreNal a week later.

Goalkeeper Renan is ruled out as he joins up with the pre-Olympic squad who play a friendly against a Rio de Janeiro select side. Sidnei who received a red card on the weekend against Botafogo misses through suspension as do Ricardo Lopes and Alex. Nilmar is also likely to be absent for the trip to the Barradão stadium, Salvador. The important striker is still recovering from injury.

What do you think the Inter team will be against Vitória? As always, let me know your views and comments!

The red reconstruction begins! / Começa a reconstrução vermelha!

I've been thinking about how I can keep this blog up to date with the latest news from Inter and have a good understanding of day-to-day events at the club despite being in the UK. I've decided that the best way to do this is to pay close attention to the two main newspapers from the city, Zero Hora and Correio do Povo. This is something which I hope will become a regular feature on the blog and if you have any news from the club please let me know at matbur59@hotmail.com

Beira Rio’s last idol Fernandão leaves / Fernandão foi o último ídolo a deixar o Beira-Rio reads today’s edition of the Porto Alegre newspaper Zero Hora.

Internacional are looking to strengthen the squad following the shock departure of the hugely popular captain Fernandão and with the appointment Tite, the new coach. With the club looking to add at least two possible additions to the squad, the talk is now no longer who is leaving but who could be arriving at Beira-Rio.

Inter are thought to be looking at players based outside of Brazil with possible signings coming from Argentina, Colombia or Uruguay. Funding for these transfers is set to be confirmed by the end of this month as Portuguese investors Gestifute are closing in on a deal where they will sign 18 year old centre back Sidnei. With Inter now having relatively healthy finances the club have confirmed that new captain Edinho and Alex will not be sold.

In addition, three major European based names are already being rumoured to be interesting Inter, CKSA Moscow striker Ramon could be one possibility having played under Tite at Atlético MG. Another name being rumoured is Ricardo Oliveira who is currently playing in Spain. Ricardo Oliveira has an excellent goal scoring record in Brazil after stints at Portuguesa, Santos and Sao Paulo. In Europe, Ricardo Oliveira has played in both Spain and Italy with Valencia, Milan and current club Real Zaragoza. However, the most exciting name to be linked is the possible arrival of former star, Rafael Sobis! Sobis who is currently contracted to Real Betis has failed to adapt in Spain and is thought to be unhappy. The return of Rafael Sobis who came through Inter’s youth academy would be a huge lift to the club and supporters who are still recovering from the shock loss of Fernandão.

Who would you like to see Inter sign? Is there a possibility of Watson Renteria coming back? Let me know your views!

Thanks to Mario Sinhorelli Neto for contributing with translation.

About me..

About me..

Firstly I would like to thank every single person who has looked at or commented in this blog. I am very surprised to see how many people have left messages here after just 2 days! I do not intend to make this blog about me as it should be about Inter but quite a number of you have asked how I support Inter. Also some of you have offered your help in providing me with information and I will get in touch with you all for your views and knowledge! Some of you have request I join Orkut. It may be difficult for me to register as I do not speak Portuguese but I will have a look at it. Anyway, this is how a Welsh boy became a Colorado-

My name is Matt and I’m 26 years old and I live in Swansea, Wales. I do not speak Portuguese and have never visited Porto Alegre but I support Internacional and have began my blog to help create an English language community for Colorado’s across the world.

I began following Inter about 10 years ago. I have always been fascinated with Brazil and decided I would take an interest in a Brazilian club. Shortly after this, I’m not sure how but I began reading about the Gaúcho people. I read about the Gaúcho roots and proud history of the region so I decided to support a Gaúcho club. It could have been Gremio but fortunately I chose Inter!! I think it was perhaps because the shirt is red, the same as Wales.

When I began to follow Inter they had players like Christian, Andre, Gamarra, Fabiano, Encisco then I remember Rochemback and then Lucio coming through. I learned more and more about the club thanks to a Colorado who began talking to online-
Lauro Strazzabosco Dorneles (Bosco). We would have many discussions about the club and players and I learnt nearly everything I know about Inter from this great Colorado! During this time, Internacional have been aware of my support. They once sent me an Inter shirt (Chevrolet) and some other items! I was then also mentioned on the official Inter site
http://www.internacional.com.br/pagina.php?modulo=1&setor=35 when I found some programmes featuring Inter here in UK which I bought and donated to the club. I think they are now in the Inter museum. Shortly afterwards, I was given a signed Inter shirt by my good friend Bosco as a gift!

Since then I have followed the club for several years despite speaking only English. It has been difficult at times. I used to sometimes listen to Inter on Radio Gaucha in Portuguese but I could understand “Goooool!” I also have the Copa Libertadores DVD. Brazilian football is not shown here in UK so it is very difficult for me to watch live games but I do sometimes watch online and am able to view highlights. Hopefully my blog will create an English language community of Inter fans and will hopefully be the best online english language source of all things Inter! Please keep coming back to my blog and leaving your opinions.

It’s been fantastic to hear from all of you, I hope this blog can be successful. Thanks again,

Go Inter!!!

Shock at Beira-Rio as Fernandão leaves Inter!

Within days of starting my blog, there's been a second piece of major news from Internacional. Inspirational captain Fernandão left the club yesterday hours before the club were due to play Botafogo as he agreed a 2 year contract with Al-Gharafa of Qatar.

30 year old Fernandão had become a talismanic figure at Inter since joining in 2004 and captained the club to it's famous Copa Libertadores and World Club Cup victories in 2006. Fernandão also led Inter to two Campeonato Gaúcho titles as well as putting in some key performances against Gremio. Fernandão leaves Beira Rio just days after popular striker Iarley joined struggling Brasileiro side Goiás.

This is a huge blow to Inter's hopes of qualifiying for the Copa Libertadores in which they need to finish in the top 4 of the Brasileiro. Despite yesterdays win, the loss of Fernandão makes Tite's task of replacing the succesful Abel Braga increasingly difficult. Edinho who captained the side against Botafogo appears to of been made the clubs new captain.

A huge loss to Inter and already possibly the defining point of the season. Let me know your views!

10 man Inter see off Fogão

Tite’s first game as Inter coach saw his side take 3 points last night with a 2-1 over Botafogo. New captain Edinho (6 mins) gave Tite the perfect start with a 25 yard screamer which sent the Beira Rio into frenzy. Inter doubled their lead when number 9, Adriano (17 mins) scored with a good finish from a tight angle following a fortunate deflection from a Botafogo defender. Despite the perfect start, Inter saw Sidnei sent off for collecting a second yellow card just before half time. Despite having only 10 men, Inter held onto their lead until Alessandro (90 mins) headed in at the far post unmarked from a free kick to give Botafogo a late constellation goal. The win see’s Inter climb to 14th in the Brasileiro where they go into the 7th round (7ª rodada) and visit 10th place Vitória next Sunday.

Tite: Can the ex-Gremista fill Abel Braga's shoes?

What better way to mark the beginning of my blog with the beginning of a new era for Inter. This Thursday the club announced that Porto Alegre born Tite is the man to replace the previously departed Abel Braga. Tite’s appointment at Beira Rio is not without controversy as he has strong ties with cross city rivals, Gremio. Despite this Tite’s record is credible having won the Copa do Brasil with Gremio and also managing the likes of Corinthinans and Atletico Mineiro.

This is the first coaching role for Tite since leaving U.A.E. based Al Ain FC a year ago and he most certainly has his work cut out in replacing previous Inter coach Abel Braga who led the club to both the Copa Libertadores title and the FIFA World Club Cup.

Does Tite have what it takes to qualify for the Copa Libertadores this season? Are his links with Gremio too strong? How do the Colorado’s in Porto Alegre feel about the clubs decision to appoint Tite?

Let me know what you think!

Inter V Botafogo

Following last weeks disappointing 3-1 defeat to Portuguesa, Inter welcome Rio based Botafogo this evening who will also be looking to bounce back from defeat in their previous game.

The game is of particular significance for Inter as it is the first match under newly appointed coach Tite. (Look out for more on Tite's appointment shortly).

Inter will be looking for a good performance tonight to help push them up the table where they currently occupy 18th place after 5 rounds.

The beginning... / A partida...

10,160 Km (6,313 miles) from the home of Sport Club Internacional, Estadio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre is the small country of Wales. Despite the enormous distance, the Gaúcho passion which has made Inter such a great club has caught the imagination of Colorado living in Swansea, UK.

My name is Matt and this is my first ever blog. I have created this blog to try and share my love of Inter in the English language. I hope this blog is not purely for English speaking Inter fans but will also attract non-Brazilians to the beautiful Brazilian game.

Through my blog I hope to provide weekly updates on all the major news, fixtures and results of Internacional. I would also like to encourage any contributions or feedback to this blog. I hope you enjoy.

Welcome, Bem-Vindo!
