37ª Rodada Round Up

In the last but one round, two teams finally succumbed to defeat in their battle against relegation battle this evening, but at the top of the table São Paulo have very nearly confirmed themselves as 2008 Campeonato Brasileiro winners after a 1-1 draw with Fluminense.

Tarta tried his best to spoil the Paulista’s party at the Estádio Morumbi as he put Flu ahead early in the second half but to the delight of the home fan’s Borges equalised minutes later put São Paulo within inches of the title, as Fluminense also confirmed their place in the Brasileirão next season.

Grêmio who led the championship for much of the year guaranteed themselves at least second place, earning a Copa Libertadores spot in the process following victory against Ipatinga. Despite taking a fifth minute lead through Escobar, Ipatinga were finally relegated to Série B after Grêmio replied with four goals.

The remaining two Copa Libertadores qualifying spots remain wide open with two from Palmeiras, Cruzeiro and Flamengo set to complete the top four. Palmeiras could only draw 0-0 away to Vitória whilst Cruzeiro fell to a 1-0 defeat at an impressive Inter reserve performance in Porto Alegre. Flamengo meanwhile, once again lost points in dramatic fashion. Two goals from Obina and a goal from Juan appeared to put Fla in complete control over Goiás at the Maracanã, but strikes from Baier (pen) and Ernando pulled it back to 3-2 before half time. Goiás then completed their comeback when Feltri levelled to make it 3-3.

In Curitiba, Vasco kept their fight against relegation alive after a goal either side of the half for Amaral gave Vasco a much needed win against Coritiba. Vasco must now win against Vitória in next week’s final round and depend on other results to survive.

Figueirense meanwhile also gave their survival hopes a massive lift with a 3-2 away win over Botafogo. Diogo and Jairo put the visitors’ in front in the second half before Alexsandro reduced the deficit for Botafogo. Tadeu then wrapped up the points for Figueirense in what could be a priceless win if they can also guarantee their safety next Sunday.

At the Estádio dos Aflitos, Náutico edged towards safety sending Atlético Paranaense on the verge of relegation at the same time. Ferreira’s first half goal for Atlético was short lived as the forward was sent off moments later. Clodoaldo breathed fresh life into the Náutico’s fight against the drop scoring twice to give the Timbu a precious win as they create a two point gap over the bottom four.

37ª Rodada results: (Sun) Ipatinga 1-4 Grêmio, Náutico 2-1 Atlético-PR, Botafogo 1-3 Figueirense, Internacional 1-0 Cruzeiro, São Paulo 1-1 Fluminense, Portuguesa 2-2 Sport, Coritiba 0-2 Vasco, Flamengo 3-3 Goiás, Atlético-MG 0-0 Santos , Vitória 0-0 Palmeiras

Internacional completed their final home Brasileirão fixture of the season in winning fashion as the Colorado second team defeated Libertadores chasing Cruzeiro thanks to a first half header from Gustavo Nery.

Line up: Lauro, Bustos (Ricardo Lopes), Danny Morais, Orozco, Ramon, Maycon, Guiñazu, Gustavo Nery, Rosinei (Paulinho), Taison, Daniel Carvalho (Walter)

Highlights:

Inter v Cruzeiro

After suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte earlier this season, Inter’s second team will be seeking revenge this afternoon at the Beira-Rio (17:00 local time).

Tite’s side is expected to show little resemblance however to the Inter line up which defeated Estudiantes last Wednesday with almost the entire team being rested in what is Inter’s final home fixture in the 2008 Campeonato Brasileiro.

Only Guiñazu who is suspended for the Sudamericana final second leg, and goalkeeper Lauro are expected to continue in the team. In defence central defender Orozco is likely to feature after completing his one match suspension against Fluminense last weekend meaning young central defender Pessanha who made his debut against Flu is likely to step out of the team. The match could also mark Daniel Carvalho’s final Beira-Rio appearance with the former idol, who has been linked with both Flamengo and Santos this week, set to complete his unsuccessful loan deal and return to Russia.

In contrast to Inter, third placed Cruzeiro have everything to play for in the Brasileirão and the Raposa (Fox) are battling with Grêmio, Palmeiras and Flamengo to secure one of the three remaining Copa Libertadores spots. Adilson Baptista’s side arrive in Porto Alegre in good form having defeated Flamengo last weekend and winning four of their last five matches (WLWWW) including a 3-0 win over Grêmio. Cruzeiro however are without their top scorer Guillermo who has needed 18 times in the Brasileirão.

Guiñazu likely to play against Cruzeiro

With Tite continuing the policy of resting the first team in preparation for their Copa Sudamericana commitments, the reserve team that will face Cruzeiro remains unconfirmed.

Despite confirmation however, it is expected that Pablo Guiñazu, who is suspended for the second leg is likely to start. ‘El loco’ was dismissed midway through the first half against Estudiantes for picking up two yellow cards in La Plata. He could be joined in the team by goalkeeper Lauro who despite featuring in the Sudamericana, has played in all Inter’s recent Brasileirão fixtures.

Colombian full back Bustos who missed last weekend’s match against Fluminense through suspension could also return.

With Inter holding a private training session this morning, Tite’s team against third placed Cruzeiro is not likely to be confirmed until shortly before kickoff tomorrow afternoon.

A full preview of Inter’s match against Cruzeiro will be available tomorrow.

Gre-Nal success for Inter under 17’s

Internacional’s under 17 side, led by coach Andrés Prodes defeated Grêmio 3-1 at the Olímpico to secure the Gaucho state title.

After defeating Grêmio at the Beira-Rio 1-0, Inter’s victory at the Olímpico ensured the Colorado the title, winning 4-1 on aggregate.

Inter’s under 17’s finished the competition with 25 victories, 4 draws and just 3 defeats.

There are eight different covers to choose from, you can

37ª Rodada Preview

The unpredictable marathon that is the Brasileirão enters it’s last but one round this weekend. With all the fixtures being played at the same time on Sunday afternoon, Champions-elect, São Paulo can officially be crowned 2008 champions with just one point. Grêmio, Cruzeiro, Palmeiras and Flamengo meanwhile will continue their battle for the three remaining Libertadores spots.

Arguably, the most important matches of the round feature the clubs involved in the relegation battle with even 13th placed Fluminense not completely assured of their future in the top flight. The relegation places could be confirmed however if the bottom four sides all lose and Náutico win.

So, a point at the Morumbi for São Paulo against Fluminense would hand the Tricolor Paulista their third successive title. A point would also be welcomed by Flu who need to reach 44 points to be guaranteed of safety. The race for the remaining Libertadores spots looks set to run to the wire. Even a draw against Grêmio would relegate Ipatinga to Série B when the two clubs meet in Minas Gerais. Grêmio could confirm their place in the 2009 Copa Libertadores with a point providing Flamengo lose. Fla, on the back of their unfortunate 3-2 defeat against Cruzeiro last weekend, face a Goiás side who never seem to shy away when facing the big teams. Third placed Cruzeiro are likely to play Inter’s unpredictable second team whilst Palmeiras, fourth placed, travel to Bahia state to take on Vitória.

With Ipatinga needing a mathematical miracle to avoid the drop, Portuguesa and Vasco can both pull themselves on equal points with Náutico who sit above the relegation zone in 16th place. Portuguesa who earned a credible 0-0 draw with Goiás last weekend are home again against mid table Sport. The club who continue to attract the most attention in the relegation battle however are Vasco da Gama. The Rio strugglers were defeated last weekend by São Paulo and a defeat away to Coritiba could see them relegated. Figueirense, who occupy 17th spot, could climb out of the relegation spaces if they can win in Rio against Botafogo. Náutico, two points clear of the relegation zone could decide the fate of the bottom sides with a win against Atlético-PR. Santos and Fluminense who both need a point can secure their future with draws against Atlético-MG and São Paulo respectively.

A full round up of events and confirmation of any relegation will follow on Monday!

37ª Rodada fixtures: (Sun) Ipatinga v Grêmio, Náutico v Atlético-PR, Botafogo v Figueirense, Internacional v Cruzeiro, São Paulo v Fluminense, Portuguesa v Sport, Coritiba v Vasco, Flamengo v Goiás, Atlético-MG v Santos , Vitória v Palmeiras

Racial tension amongst Grêmista’s lead to arrests

clicRBS report today that the civil police carried out an operation this morning to arrest leading member’s of ‘Geral do Grêmio’ , Grêmio’s largest barrabrava group.

According to the report, four people were arrested after two members of rival gang Máfia were hospitalised after being shot during an incident at the Estádio Olímpico following Grêmio’s match against Coritiba earlier this month. It was confirmed that firearms were found at one of the raids however it is unconfirmed whether they belong to the person arrested.

Tensions were thought to of been raised when the two supporters, Lucas Ballardin aged 19 and Marçal Santos, 30 changed their allegiances’ to the Máfia torcidas organizadas group as a result of racial beliefs of Geral do Grêmio’.

Geral’s beliefs are so racist that they even have a policy of not celebrating black players who have played for the club. Geral will refuse to even use the name or face of former Grêmio idol Everalo on their banners and flags.

Inter reserves worry Wagner

Cruzeiro midfielder Wagner is the latest name to publicly express his concern about facing Inter’s second team following comments made last week by Fluminense coach René Simões.

Wagner, whose Cruzeiro side are looking to qualify for next years Copa Libertadores face Inter in Porto Alegre having not won away from home in their last four matches.

“They are all players of a great team and in the Campeonato Brasileiro everyone wants to show their value. It will be a though game at home. We have to win to earn a spot in the Libertadores”, Wagner explained.

D’Alessandro speaks of Santa Catarina sadness

Andrés D’Alessandro expressed his sadness today following recent events in Rio Grande do Sul’s neighbouring state Santa Catarina where it is thought at least 86 people have lost their lives following flooding.

“It is a very serious situation. It is not a joke. We had a minute’s silence because of this. There are many victims. It is very sad”, commented the Argentine.

Up to 55,000 people have been left homeless, as a quarter of Santa Catarina’s 1.5 million population have been affected following flash flooding and landslides.

Proud Píffero praises Tite

Current Inter president Vitório Píffero, praised the side for their magnificent performance last night, but it was coach Tite who was singled out for special attention.

Píffero was asked following the game who did he think had the best match and the president gave an unexpected answer. “It’s difficult but I will vote for Tite. I think he managed to make the team play with like eleven with only ten players. I believe that the coach Tite was very good. Without doubt, the victory goes through all the players, but he had a big hand in it”, explained Píffero.

“With ten men, we kept the two lines of four with Nilmar alone in attack. With this, we did not give a chance to the opposition. Álvaro at the back was like a lion but I cannot name one bad name, we have to mention them all. Tite was perfect as were the players as they followed the coaches orders”, Piffero proudly proclaimed.

“It was a complete victory. Within ten minutes of being reduced to ten men we scored. What’s more, only we created opportunities to score goals. Against a team what has not lost for 43 games here, we with ten secured a significant advantage ahead of next Wednesday at the Beira-Rio”, he added.

“Obviously today is a party, we have to celebrate. But they can be sure that we play at our home with the same care we played with here, hopefully finishing the game with eleven!”, Píffero continued.

He was then asked how he felt about the standard of play that the side had produced at the end of the year.

“Tite came after the transfer window and we were unable to bring in reinforcements. Internacional have been seeking players in Brazil and from abroad. We can only bring in players from abroad in August and managed to complete negotiations in the last few days, as was the case of D’Alessandro and Álvaro too, who are the standard of Internacional. We searched major players across the word and with the Brazilian calendar, it is difficult. We are in the middle of the season with our timetable being like Europe”, he explained.

“Our policy is, when you sell an important player and we have to sell. We seek one that can become even more important. Out of Pato came Nilmar. Fernandão left but D’Alessandro came. That is the policy which has been made since 2002. But, if these players are not in Brazil, we then have to wait for the transfer window. We will follow this policy. It is a policy that makes Internacional one of the great teams of it’s time, of nearly 100 years. This is undoubtedly one the great teams that has been build by Internacional. Let’s see if next Wednesday, with the Beira-Rio full, we put our hands on the cup which nobody has won before in Brazil”, Píffero added.

The Inter president did however refuse to be drawn on speculation surrounding Tite’s future at the club if he is re-elected as club president for the club’s centenary.

“My attitude is the same. Do not confuse the candidate with the president. We’re in the middle of the two and I will not change my stance.”, he explained.

Tite remains calm after victory in La Plata

Tite remained cautious following last night’s first leg victory emphasizing to the press that Inter only lead half way through.

“It is only 90 minutes. We but be aware of that first. I am very happy but I realise that it was just the first 90 minutes and we must now play again at home. Here we have won against an opponent who had gone 43 matches without losing, in front of their fans in a crowded stadium but they have the same qualities to go to the Beira-Rio and win. I am also pleased with our spirit and solidarity when Guiñazu was dismissed. Everyone had to give a little more. We divided Guiñazu into ten and each player had a part to contribute towards. This is the same spirit which we will have at the Beira-Rio.”, explained Tite last night.

Ten men Inter take first leg lead in Sudamericana final

Internacional will take a 1-0 lead to the Beira-Rio in the Copa Sudamericana final next week. Despite being reduced to ten men midway through the first half after Pablo Guiñazu was harshly dismissed for two bookable offences, a typically resilient Inter then took the lead after Alex converted a penalty after Nilmar was bundled over inside the area.

Inter v Estudiantes

Tonight see’s Inter play their biggest match in almost two years as the Colorado proudly become the first Brazilian club to appear in the Copa Sudamericana final.

Inter face Estudiantes in the Copa Sudamericana final first leg in the Argentine city of La Plata (22:00 Brasilia time). Estudiantes, led by former Gremista Leonardo Astrada have a rich history of success in continental competitions and a good results for Inter tonight at the Estádio Ciudade would give the Colorado every chance of lifting the trophy in next weeks second leg in Porto Alegre. Inter must however be aware of Estudiantes impressive home record, having remained undefeated in 43 matches, winning 33 and drawing 10.

With Inter having little to play for in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Tite has been able to completely focus his squad’s attentions to the Sudamericana campaign. As a result of rotating his squad in recent Brasileirão matches, Tite is without any injury or suspension worries and has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Despite Tite having a 22 man squad to pick from, the Inter coach is expect to name what is widely accepted as the clubs strongest line up.

Lauro who has grown into the Inter goalkeeper jersey since replacing Clemer, will continue in goal behind a solid defence of Bolívar who continues at right back, Índio, Álvaro and Marcão. With Bolívar and Marcão less inclined to attack, the Inter defence is shaped on a more European style with a solid flat back four.

Inter’s midfield will again be key tonight as it was in the previous rounds against Boca Juniors and Chivas. Magrão and Edinho will be expected to maintain a high work rate as they look to shield the back four and prevent Juan Sebastián Verón from creating chances for the Estudiantes forwards. Whilst the Argentine duo of Guiñazu and D’Alessandro will also have key roles. Guiñazu who has developed into a top quality, tenacious midfielder will again be expected to work hard both defensively and going forward whilst D’Alessandro who has shined for Inter in the Sudamericana, will be expected to provide creativity and support for Inter’s forward line of Alex and Nilmar.

Tite will be hoping that Nilmar’s pace, anticipation and finishing could earn Inter a crucial away goal whilst Alex, who will often drop deeper to pick up the ball, will remain a threat with his long range left footed strikes, particularly at set plays.

Expected Line Up Estudiantes:
Mariano Andújar, Marcos Angeleri, Agustín Alayes, Leandro Desábato, Juan Manuel Díaz, Diego Galván, Juan Sebastián Verón, Matías Sánchez, Leandro Benítez, Juan Manuel Salgueiro, Mauro Boselli.
Coach: Leonardo Astrada

Expected Line Up Internacional
Lauro; Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro e Marcão; Edinho, Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro; Alex, Nilmar
Coach: Tite

Referee: Carlos Amarilla (Fifa-PAR)
Linesmen: Manuel Bernal (Fifa-PAR), Emigdio Ruiz Roa (Fifa-PAR)

Alex speaks to FIFA.com

Inter’s ever-impressive number ten Alex is featured in an interview on the official FIFA website.

Inter fly to Buenos Aires in good spirits

The Inter squad flew into Buenos Aires earlier this afternoon and were caught in a relaxed mood ahead of Wednesday’s final.

Several of the squad were sporting unusual glasses in what appeared to be an in-joke amongst the Colorado’s.

Inter arrived in Buenos Aires before travelling to La Plata where they arrived an hour ago.

Daniel Carvalho expresses interest in Flamengo move

With his current loan with Inter due to expire, Daniel Carvalho has acknowledged that his return to his home-town club had not been successful as he had hoped and cited an interest in joining Flamengo.

Arriving at Inter on a four month loan deal from CSKA Moscow, Daniel Carvalho struggled to make the same impact he did when previously at the club at the turn of the millennium when he quickly became recognised as one of Brazil’s most talented players. After battling to reach match fitness, Daniel Carvalho then found his first team opportunities limited with the form of D’Alessandro, Alex and even Taison.

Daniel Carvalho confirmed that the possibilities of remaining at Inter in 2009 were nil. “I am no more with Inter. I already fulfilled my word that if I returned to Brazil, I would choose them and now, I must go my own way. At the end of the season I will go and decide my future.”, revealed Carvalho to Jornal dos Sports.

The attacking midfielder then hinted that his future could lie in Brazil even though he recently renewed his contract with CSKA to the end of 2011. “I do not know if my future is in Brazil, I can look at another club here or I can return back to Russia. My preference is to remain here. If I have a proposal from Flamengo it would be my priority. I would like to live in Rio”, revealed Carvalho.

Inter confirm squad to travel to Argentina

Inter have confirmed their 22 man squad which will depart for Argentina at 12:10 this afternoon. Tite has the luxury of having to pick from a full squad is not expected to make any changes to his line up for Wednesday night.

Travelling Inter squad:

GK: Lauro, Clemer
Full backs: Bolívar, Marcão, Ângelo, Gustavo Nery, Ramon
Centre backs: Índio, Álvaro, Danny Morais
Midfielders: Magrão, Edinho, Guiñazu, Sandro, Rosinei
Attacking Midfielders: D’Alessandro, Andrezinho, Taison
Forwards: Alex, Nilmar, Daniel Carvalho, Luiz Carlos

Guiña- “Estudiantes the most complete team in Argentina”

Pablo Guiñazu one of the two Argentine’s in the Colorado squad, has warned Inter of their Sudamericana final opponents Estudiantes.

Speaking to SporTV, Guiñazu spoke of Estudiantes strengths. “Estudiantes is a team which in the last four, five years has shown to be very strong, very organised with sufficient quality. The arrival of Verón added to their quality even more. They are a team that we must ensure we take care of, very organized, strong marking, they know how to play. I find that they are the most complete team in Argentina”, explained the Colorado midfielder.

Inter UK guide to... Estudiantes

Wednesday evening will see Inter play their biggest match since their World Club Cup triumph against Barcelona in 2006. But, what do we know about their Copa Sudamericana final opponents, Estudiantes?

Based in La Plata, a city in the Buenos Aires province, Estudiantes were formed four years before Inter in 1905 and have a strong rivalry with city neighbours Gimnasia. Known as the ‘pincharratas’ (rat-stabbers) or ‘pinchas’ due to laboratory work done by students who formed a large number of the club’s early membership, the club have a prestigious history in Argentine football having achieved domestically, continentally and internationally.

Estudiantes have won the Argentine Championship four times with their most recent being in 2006. Estudiantes also have an impressive record outside of Argentina, having won three Copa Libertadores titles in a three year golden period during 1968, ‘69 and ’70. It was also in this era where the club a Copa Intercontinental title (1968) and a Copa Interamericana victory (1969).

In modern times, Estudiantes most recognisable player is La Brujita (Little Witch), Juan Sebastián Verón although their coach Leonardo Astrada may well be a recognisable face to many Colorados. Astrada played for Grêmio against Inter in 2000in a match which finished 1-1 in the Campeonato Gaúcho.

Meanwhile, Estudiantes prepared for Wednesday’s match with a 3-1 victory against Tigre last weekend. The results leaves the club in 7th place in the Argentine Championship having shown mixed form (W7 D3 L6). Their route to the 2008 Copa Sudamericana final began last year when they qualified for the competition after finishing 2nd last year in the Argentine Championship. Their campaign has seen them defeat three other Argentine clubs.

Estudiantes road to the final:

Preliminary round, beat Independiente on penalties
First round, beat Arsenal de Sarandí 2-1 over two legs
Quarter final, beat Botafogo 4-2 over two legs
Semi final, beat Argentinos Jrs 2-1 over two legs

Inter await CONMEBOL decision

CONMEBOL are set to announce their decision how the Peruvian Football Federation, the FPF will be punished following dispute between CONMBOL, the FPF and Peruvian Government.

If CONMEBOL decided to strip the FPF off their allocation of places for the Copa Libertadores, it is thought to be likely that this year’s Copa Sudamericana winners will receive entry to South America’s most prestigious club competition.

A decision is expected within the next hour. More details to be announced when confirmed.

It now appears that CONMEBOL will give the FPF an extended deadline before any punishment is decided. This makes it unlikley that the Sudamericana winners will be given a Libertadores qualification.

Thanks to Cesar and Jean who have kept us updated in what has been a complex situation with several mixed reports.

2009 Campeonato Gaúcho fixtures decided

Before the 2008 Campeonato Brasileiro has even finished, the fixtures for the 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho have been confirmed with the state competition beginning on the 20th January.

Inter’s first fixture is against Santa Cruz whilst the first Gre-Nal of the year will take place on the 8th February.

The format will see 16 clubs divided into two groups who will each compete for two mini-championships, Taça Fernando Carvalho and Taça Fábio Koff. The winner of each competition will then play to decide the 2009 Gaúcho champion.

Inter were drawn in Group A:

Avenida
Esportivo

Inter rumoured to be interested in Vitória left back

According to reports in the northern Brazilian newspaper, Tribuna da Bahia, Vitória left back Marcelo Cordeiro is the latest name to be linked with Internacional.

According to speculation, Vitória president Jorge Sampaio has acknowledged that the club will have difficultly in keeping the player at the end of the season but stressed that Cordeiro’s contract with Vitória doesn’t expire until the end of 2010.

Vitória are thought to be looking for a fee of around US$ 1 million (R$ 2.4 million) for Marcelo Cordeiro with Botafogo and Grêmio also rumoured to be interested in the left back.

Marcelo Cordeiro has made 31 Campeonato Brasileiro appearances for Vitória this year, scoring five goals.

Inter run through final preparations in Porto Alegre

The Inter squad will train for the last time in Porto Alegre later this afternoon before departing for Argentina.

The training session will be held at the Beira-Rio behind closed doors with the squad expected to work on tactical and set piece’s moves.

Inter will then depart for the city of La Plata at noon tomorrow before training at the venue of the final first leg, Estádio Ciudad de La Plata.

36ª Rodada Round Up

In what has been an intriguing race for the 2008 Brasileirão title, the championship appears to have been finally decided in the 36ª Rodada.

São Paulo are now just a point away from successfully defending the Brasileirão for three straight years after they defeated Vasco 2-1 at the San Januário last night. Wagner gave São Paulo the lead before Madson’s equaliser gave Vasco fresh hope but the game was settled early in the second half when Hugo put São Paulo back in front to the delight of the travelling Paulistas.

The real drama of the evening however, took place in the state of Bahia, northern Brazil, as second placed Grêmio faced Vitória. Former Grêmio and now Vitória coach Vágner Mancini kept to his pre-match promise of doing everything he could to defeat Grêmio as the Leão da Barra (Lion from the Barra), sprang a surprise defeat on the visitors winning 4-2. The visitors did take the lead but Vitória responded in style scoring four. Grêmio could only manage to pull a goal back and also had Amaral sent off in a miserable evening for Gremistas, with the defeat effectively ending their title hopes.

Flamengo, who were also fighting to keep their faint title hopes alive, were also ruled out of the Brasileirão as they sank to defeat away to Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte. Fla battled hard, twice coming back from behind but Cruzeiro killed off any remaining Flamengo title ambitions with Ramires’ late winner to giving the Raposa (Fox) a 3-2 win. Concerningly for the Rubro-Negro (The Scarlet-Black), the defeat could also have longer lasting implications on their hopes of Copa Libertadores qualification. The defeat see’s them fall to fifth place below both Cruzeiro and Palmeiras with just two games remaining.

With the title race now seemingly over, attentions can turn towards what has been an equalling unpredictable and intriguing relegation battle. With four from a possible eight clubs still fighting for survival, relegation to the second tier Série B remains a lottery.

Fluminense’s victory last night over Inter’s reserve side at the Beira-Rio takes the Tricolor Carioca to 43 points which suggests that they are likely to be safe, although they still need a point from their final two games to ensure safety.

Despite suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat in Paraná state to Coritiba, with the ever impressive Keirrison scoring four, Santos should also be safe if they can pick up another point to reach the total of 44 points. In Rio, Atlético-PR took a step closer to survival following their 2-2 draw with Botafogo on Saturday. Carlos’ equaliser earned the Furacão (Hurricane) a point, after Botafogo had twice taken the lead at the Engenhão. The result leaves Atlético with 42 points, still two away from guaranteed safety.

With Flu, Santos and Atlético Paranaense all having safety within reach, the Série A future’s of the bottom five, Náutico, Figueirense, Vasco, Portuguesa and Ipatinga are anything but certain.

Falling to two first half goals at the Parque Antarctica against Palmeiras, Ipatinga require something of a miracle to avoid the drop and are destined to return to Série B after just one season in the Campeonato Brasileiro. Ipatinga must comfortably win their final two matches and hope that Náutico fail to pick up a single point. 19th placed Portuguesa, earned a point on Saturday night in a goalless draw with Goiás in São Paulo. Portuguesa find themselves three points from the safety zone and could well be set to return to Série B. The biggest club in the relegation zone, Vasco find themselves in a similar situation, having lost 2-1 to São Paulo, Vasco are also three points away from safety with two matches left. Figueirense gave their chances of survival a huge boost last Thursday night when they defeated Náutico 4-3. The win puts Figueirense of 38 points, just two away from Náutico who sit precariously above the drop zone.

A preview of the relegation battle going into the final two rounds of the Campeonato Brasilero will appear soon.

36ª Rodada results/fixtures: (Thurs) Figueirense 4-3 Náutico (Sat) Portuguesa 0-0 Goiás, Coritiba 5-1 Santos, Botafogo 2-2 Atlético-PR (Sun) Vasco 1-2 São Paulo, Vitória 4-2 Grêmio, Cruzeiro 3-2 Flamengo, Internacional 0-2 Fluminense, Sport 3-0 Atlético-MG, Palmeiras 2-0 Ipatinga

Inter v Fluminense

Relegation threatened Fluminense are the latest visitors to the Beira-Rio (19:10 local time) although the Tricolor Carioca can expect to face a reserve Inter side.

With almost the entire first team being rested ahead of Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana final, only goalkeeper Lauro will continue in a side which could well cause Fluminense coach René Simões some confusion.

Tite’s reserve team will be without two defenders for this evenings match. Orozco is ruled out as the Colombian is suspended whilst Gustavo Nery misses out against one of his former clubs through personal problems.

Ramon is expected to replace Gustavo Nery at left back whilst young central defender Pessanha is likely to start his second game of the season, replacing Orozco. The Colorado defence will be completed by right back Bustos and Danny Morais.
Inter’s midfield will consist of Rosinei, Maycon, Sandro and Andrezinho with Daniel Carvalho and Guto continuing up front.

With little to play for the Inter, the game is of far more significance for the visitors. Flu currently occupy 15th place in the Brasileirão with 40 points. With four teams from a possible eight facing relegation, mathematicians believe that 43 points will be enough to keep them up.

Fluminese’s highly rated central defender Thiago Silva explains, “We must win this match in any way to move away from the danger of relegation. We cannot leave it go to the last two rounds. It is this game that can exempt us from relegation. We must search for the victory against Internacional.”

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Bustos, Danny Morais, Pessanha, Ramon, Rosinei, Maycon, Sandro, Andrezinho, Daniel Carvalho, Guto

36ª Rodada preview

Entering the final three games of the season, Brazilian football has not witnessed such a close finish at either end of the table since the Campeonato Brasileiro changed to its European format. At the top of the table São Paulo and Grêmio look set to fight it out until the end, with Flamengo still hoping they can take advantage in the event of both teams slipping up. At the bottom of the Brasileiro, incredibly anyone from thirteenth place down could still find themselves playing in Série B next year.

São Paulo currently in pole position, can take a huge stride towards their third successive title in what is arguably the game of the 36ª Rodada. On Saturday night the Tricolor Paulista travel to Rio where they take on Vasco da Gama at the São Januário. Vasco themselves are under intense pressure amidst their battle against the drop. Meanwhile Grêmio are also the road as the travel to the northern city of Salvador where they face mid table Vitória. Flamengo, five points behind the leaders, and third in the table, can keep their faint title hopes alive if they can win in Minas Gerais against fourth placed Cruzeiro.

In the fight against the relegation, the Brasileirão’s bottom side Ipatinga will be looking to follow up last weekend’s victory over Sport, when they visit Palmeiras. Portuguesa, above them in 19th position welcome mid table Goiás to São Paulo. Meanwhile 17th placed Figueirense boosted their hopes of beating the drop after playing their fixture with Náutico on Thursday, winning the game 4-3.

Three of Brazil’s more traditional sides continue to sweat and are just as desperate for points. Fluminense, two points above the relegation zone travel to Porto Alegre where their likely to face a reserve Inter side whilst Atlético Paranaense take on Botafogo in Rio. Santos finally, could secure their future in the top flight if they can take three points against Coritiba.

Mind games begin ahead of Sudamericana

Following earlier claims from Estudiantes’ Sebastián Veron that Inter are the favourites to win the competition, Inter’s president Vitório Píffero responded to the comments in an interview with Bandeirantes radio.

“He wants to try and pass the responsibility. Now he does not have favouritism at his end. The only certainty is who makes the most out of the two games will leave as the champion”, Píffero responded.

Reserves again expected to feature in Brasileirão

With the first team being given yesterday off to relax and recover following their ‘goleada’ against Chivas, only D’Alessandro, Lauro and Índio were seen at the Beira-Rio as the trio underwent minor medical evaluations.

The first team will resume training again this afternoon, where Alex is expected to rejoin the squad after returning from Brasilia. The first team will continue training on Saturday and Sunday morning. Meanwhile, the reserve players continue training as they prepare for Sunday’s Campeonato Brasileiro match against Fluminense.

Inter and CONMEBOL await FIFA decision

CONMBOL communication director Nestor Benitez, confirmed to radio Guaíba yesterday that they expect confirmation from FIFA today regarding the issue of qualification spots available to the Peruvian FA for next year’s Copa Libertadores.

In what is a complex situation, domestic issues between the Peruvian government and the Peruvian football association (FPF) has led to the FPF coming under pressure from South America’s governing body CONMEBOL and FIFA.

FIFA could sanction a continental ban of the FPF which would see the Peruvian league being stripped of its three Copa Libertadores qualification spots and even its qualification place for the World Cup.

The situation quickly became of interest to Inter as the club desperately wants to compete in next year’s Copa Libertadores during the club’s centenary year. As finalists of this year’s Copa Sudamericana, Inter are pressuring CONMEBOL to re-allocate the winners of the competition once of the Peruvian qualification places.

Inter president Vitório Píffero claimed last week that he had knowledge that the Copa Sudamericana winners would be given an opportunity to qualify for the Libertadores. Possibly with the Sudamericana winner’s competing in a playoff against the year’s previous Libertadores champions to earn qualification for the 2009 Libertadores. This was confirmed by CONMNEBOL however the ruling will not come into effect until 2010.

In an effort to persuade CONMEBOL, Píffero and club advisor Fernando Carvalho will travel to Paraguay where the CONMEBOL executive committees are scheduled to meet to discuss the issue further.

Estudiantes defeat Argentinos Jrs to reach final

The final for the 2009 Copa Sudamericana final was decided last night when Estudiantes beat Argentinos 1-0 in their semi final second leg tie.

38 year old forward José Luis Calderon scored the only goal of the game on 63 minutes which saw Estudiantes go through 2-1 on aggregate.

Estudiantes will now host the final first leg against Inter at the Estádio Ciudad de La Plata next Wednesday with the second leg being played at the Beira-Rio a week later.

Santos’ Michael latest name linked with Colorado

In what appears to be the start of the first of several transfer rumours ahead of Inter’s preparations for 2009, Santos’ midfielder Michael is the latest name to be linked with a move to Inter.

Porto Alegre newspaper, Correio do Povo is reporting that the 25 year old has attracted interest from Inter. Michael who has previously played for Corinthians, Palmeiras and Cruzeiro is currently at Santos as part of a loan transfer from Dynamo Kiev.

Inter await semi final result

After drawing 1-1 last week, Argentinos Jrs and Estudiantes meet again tonight in La Plata to decide who will face Inter in this years Copa Sudamericana final.

Estudiantes who feature the experienced midfielder Veron, are the favourites to advance through to the final after scoring an away goal in the first leg.

Inter smash Chivas to reach Sudamericana final!

Inter have become the first Brazilian club to reach the final of the Copa Sudamericana after the Colorado proved to be too strong for Chivas. Andrés D’Alessandro and Nilmar scored twice each as Inter picked up a comfortable 4-0 win at the Beira-Rio in last night’s second leg. Inter who go through to the final 6-0 on aggregate will meet either Argentinos Jrs or Estudiantes to decide the 2008 Copa Sudamericana title.

From Goal.com, D'Alessandro (20) put Inter ahead in the 20th minute with a well-placed penalty kick.

In the 36th minute D'Alessandro (36) was at it again, this time curling in a sensational free-kick that left Chivas goalkeeper Hector Hernandez with no chance.

Nilmar (44) extended Inter's lead, when he headed the ball in at the back post after Hernandez couldn't clear a corner kick that was swung in from the left flank.

In the 71st minute Nilmar completed the rout with a brilliant finish, to the delight of the strong 40,000 crowd at the Beira-Rio stadium.

Inter v Chivas

Internacional take a 2-0 first leg lead into the Beira-Rio tonight (22:00 local time), knowing that they have every chance of reaching their first major final since their 2006 World Club Cup final against Barcelona. Inter would also be the first Brazilian club to reach the Copa Sudamericana final and would face Argentine opposition in the form of either, Argentinos Juniors or Estudiantes who play tomorrow evening.

After Alex and Nilmar handed the Colorado an impressive two goal advantage in Guadalajara last week, Tite is without one his key players- Alex. The Colorado number ten is away in Brasilia with the Seleção for their friendly with Portugal.

Despite Inter’s efforts they were unable to release Alex from the Brazilian squad who is looking to add to his two caps.

“Of course, I’m very happy but I’m torn. I live a privileged moment”, explained Alex. “I am here but I cannot panic. We got a good advantage in Mexico”, he added.

Despite the loss of Alex, Tite will however be able to recall another influential player to the side, D’Alessandro. The Argentine was unable to travel the squad and was ruled out of the first leg in Mexico after picking up a stomach bug, but the playmaker has now recovered and is expected to return straight back into Inter’s midfield.

Andrezinho who replaced D’Alessandro in Mexico is expected to lose his place in the side and Tite is expected to opt for the pace of explosive attacking midfielder, Taison ahead of fallen idol Daniel Carvalho in the absence of Alex.

Inter will once again continue with the European defensive style which served them well against Boca and in the first leg which see’s (from right to left) Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro and Marcão form a solid back line in front of Lauro.

Edinho and Magrão will work in central midfield for the Colorado whilst the Argentine duo of Guiñazu and D’Alessandro will be looking to drive the team forward in the final third. Up front, Tite will be hoping that the pace of Taison and striker Nilmar will create problems for the Chivas defence.

Chivas meanwhile arrive in Porto Alegre desperate for the win. The future of coach Efraín Flores, has been the subject of much speculation in the Mexican media ahead of this game and the Guadalarjara bsed side failed to reach the playoffs in the Mexican league last weekend despite a 2-0 vicotry over Indios.

Speaking to ESPN, Efraín Flores was keen for his side to focus on overcoming Inter’s two goal advantage.

He said: "We are calm. We are confident of playing well - no fatigue or tiredness at all. We must be organised and play with will and intensity. Inter have great players, but we have a great team too. We are in very good technical and mental form so we'll try to set the best strategy possible to do our best."

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Marcão, Edinho, Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro, Taison, Nilmar

Jancarlos and Wagner Diniz linked with Inter

Globo Esportes reports today that Inter has already began work on rebuilding the squad for 2009, its centenary year by identifying full backs Jancarlos and Wagner Diniz as possible new signings.

With speculation suggesting that Inter are set to offload two of their right backs, Ângelo and Bustos, São Paulo’s Jan Carlos and Wagner Diniz of Vasco are two players which are thought to meet Inter’s criteria.

It is thought that Inter have already made contact with representatives of the players’ and one of them could be at the Beira-Rio next season.

Jancarlos is 25 years old and joined São Paulo earlier this year from Atlético Paranaense. After starting his career at Fluminense Jancarlos is no stranger to Rio Grande do Sul after make 37 appearances for Juventude in 2004.

Wagner Diniz, also 25, is originally from northern Brazil and has been at Vasco since 2005.

Internacional mourn the loss of Dallegrave

Former club president and vice-president Arthur Dallegrave has passed away. Dallegrave aged 78, died yesterday mornign from a heart attack whilst undergoing bladder surgery.

The loss of Dallegrave who had been an influential member of the club casts a huge shadow over Wednesday’s second leg semi-final against Chivas at the Beira-Rio.

Dallegrave had spent 57 of his 78 years dedicated to Inter having joined the board in 1950. He then joined the construction committee of the Beira-Rio before becoming vice-president of the club from 1969-1976, a spell where Inter achieved eight Campeonato Gaúcho titles. Dallegrave was also vice-president of Inter during the club’s Brasileirão tricampeão (three titles) success in 1975,76 and 79.

Arthur Dallegrave passed away yesterday aged 78.

Lauro dedicated to Inter cause

As the senior Inter team trained yesterday afternoon at the Beira-Rio, goalkeeper Lauro made an unexpected appearance.

Having been part of the squad which lost against Santos at Vila Belmiro, São Paulo state on Sunday, Lauro had been given permission to rest. However despite only arriving back in Porto Alegre early yesterday afternoon, Lauro attended the training session as normal.

“I’m playing every match as if it were the last. I enjoyed all the games since I’ve signed for the team. I am very keen for us to be successful in our campaign to win the Copa Sudamericana title, so I’m as dedicated as possible in training”, Lauro explained.

Under pressure Chivas due to arrive in Porto Alegre as Inter prepare without Alex

Chivas are expected to arrive in Porto Alegre later this afternoon as the Mexican’s begin the preparations for Wednesday’s second leg match with Inter.Chivas defeated Indios 2-0 on the weekend but despite the win, have failed to qualify for the play off stage of the Meixcan championship.

Having lost 2-0 to Inter in the first leg in Guadalajara, speculation over the future of coach Efraín Flores is rife in the Mexican media with several newspapers suggesting that he will be dismissed if Chivas fail to reach the Sudamericana final.

Inter meanwhile are preparing themselves for the loss of Alex. The influential, left footed midfielder has again been announced in Dunga’s latest Brazilian squad who play Portugal on the same night. Inter had been hoping that the CBF would release Alex for Wednesday’s match but that it now appears unlikely.

Daniel Carvalho who’s spell at Inter is due to end at the end of the season or Taison are expected to be in contention to replace Alex.

35ª Rodada Round Up

With another round of matches completed, São Paulo appear to be closing in on what is looking like their third successive Brasileirão title after a 3-1 victory over Figueirense at the Morombi.

After weeks of the top five club’s constantly shuffling places, this year’s title race seems to of finally whittled down to a three horse race. Both Cruzeiro and Palmeiras seem set to miss out on the title after allowing São Paulo to build a seven point gap between the two sides with just three more rounds remaining. Cruzeiro were stunned by struggling Náutico as La Raposa fell to a shock 5-2 defeat in Pernambuco. Meanwhile in Rio, not only did Palmeiras see their hopes diminish, they also suffered the same fate as Ibson’s hat trick inspired Flamengo to a 5-2 victory keening them in them the title race- just. Grêmio remain second and are two points behind the leaders after picking up a 2-0 win against Coritiba.

At the bottom, wins for Atlético Paranaense, Fluminense and Náutico now mean the bottom four clubs are all at least three points adrift. Ipatinga remain 20th despite obtaining a 3-0 win over Sport, and are joined in the drop zone by Figueirense, Portuguesa and Vasco. Portuguesa fell four points away from safety after losing their six-pointer against Fluminense on Saturday. Despite taking a first half lead, three second half goals for Flu gave the Carioca tricolour a much needed win. Vasco complete the bottom four after falling to a 4-1 defeat last Thursday against Atlético-MG in Belo Horizonte.

The remaining fixtures continued the trend of the round which saw all the home teams win. Baier’s hat-trick handed Goiás a 3-1 win over ten men Botafogo and Atlético-PR came from behind to defeat Vitória 2-1. Santos got back to winning ways with a 1-0 home win over a reserve Inter side but even their 13th position doesn’t guarantee them safety.

Santos v Inter

Inter head into this evenings match against Santos with their attentions fully turned to Wednesday’s second leg semi final against Chivas.

Santos meanwhile are fighting for their future in the Brasileirão despite finding themselves 13th in the championship. On the back of last weekend’s defeat to fellow strugglers Vasco, Santos will be hungry for the three points at the Vila Belmiro home. Former Inter defender Fabiano Eller, now at Santos is unavailable for the Peixe along with suspended duo Fabio Costa and Rodrigo Souto.

Inter are again expected to field a reserve team with only goalkeeper Lauro continuing from the side which beat Chivas in Mexico midweek.

Daniel Carvalho will again be given another chance to try and reproduce the form that he became accustomed to during his first spell at the club, whilst highly rated youngster’s Sandro and Guto will again be given another opportunity in the first team.

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Bustos, Danny Morais, Orozco, Gustavo Nery, Sandro, Maycon, Rosinei, Taison, Daniel Carvalho, Guto

Tite-“The good clubs choose their coach”

After this morning’s training session, Tite spoke to the press ahead of tomorrow’s game against Santos. With Inter having little to compete for in the Campeonato Brasileiro, the focus of the media’s questions were understandably on their second leg match against Chivas.

In addition, Tite the media also enquired about the coach’s long term future at Inter with his contract due to expire at the end of the year. Any failure in the Copa Sudamericana coupled with the possibility of a new club president has led to suggestions that Tite could be dismissed at the end of the year. Tite however explained that it is still too early to make any decision.

“This is for the directors. The good clubs choose their coach. For me at this moment, it is my work. I am judged on good performances and good results. It is one step after another. It is still early”, commented Tite.

35ª Rodada Preview

Entering into the final four rounds of an exhausting championship, the unpredictable nature of the 2008 Brasileirão is showing no signs of stopping.

Leading the championship by two points, São Paulo are very much in the driving seat. A home win tomorrow evening against relegation battling Figueirense would go a long way to securing the Tricolor Paulista their third successive Brasileirão title.

Grêmio, who remain in second, face a tricky Coritiba side in Porto Alegre tomorrow night whilst third place Cruzeiro travel to Pernambuco where they play 17th placed Náutico this evening. A defeat for Cruzeiro could end their title ambitions for another year if São Paulo win. A defeat could also spell the end for another of the title contender’s at the Maracanã as fifth placed Flamengo take on fourth placed Palmeiras.

Back to tonight, and the Campeonato Brasileiro see’s yet another relegation six-pointer with Fluminense playing Portuguesa in Rio. Meanwhile, Ipatinga’s inevitable relegation to Série B could take a step closer if they lose at home to Sport.

Saturday’s remaining games see’s ever-inconsistent Goiás welcome Botafogo to the Serra Dourada whilst despite being 14th, Atlético Paranaense are only a point away from the drop zone as the Furacão (Hurricane) continue their search for points against mid-table Vitória. In the rounds final game, mid table Santos also continue to scramble for points face what is likely to be a reserve Internacional side following the Colorado’s Copa Sudamericana commitments. Santos are still in panic after last weekend’s defeat to Vasco who remain in the thick of the relegation battle after losing on Thursday to Atlético-MG. With eight of the twenty club’s facing a fight for their future, almost anything can and probably will happen!

Inter seeks Sorondo naturalization

According to Radio Gaucho this afternoon, Inter are investigating the possibility of applying for Brazilian citizenship for their Uruguayan Gonzalo Sorondo.

With Brazilian clubs only allowed to field three foreign players at any one time, Inter could face a possible selection headache once central defender Sorondo recovers from injury. Sorondo is currently one of five non-Brazilian’s at the club.

Inter’s non-Brazilians:-
Sorondo, central defender, Uruguay

Bustos, right back, Colombia

Spanish media link Real Madrid with Nilmar

The Spanish sports paper Marca, suggests today that Real Madrid are looking closely at Nilmar.

Following an injury to their Dutch striker Rudd Van Nistelrooy, Real Madrid are reportedly looking to add another striker to their squad and accord to Marca, Nilmar fits the bill.

Nilmar who has attracted attention from several European clubs, came close to leaving the Colorado for a second time during this summer’s transfer window and made no secret of his desire to financially secure his families future.

Doubts continue to surround the long term future of the striker who has been in outstanding form this year, partnering Alex up front.

Despite the report, the newspaper did manage to make one key mistake placing a photo of Magrão and not Nilmar!

Argentinos Jrs and Estudiantes draw first leg

Píffero- “My Libertadores source is good”

With reports yesterday suggesting that this year’s winners of the Copa Sudamericana could qualify for the Copa Libertadores, Inter president Vitório Píffero spoke to Radio Gaúcho of his confidence in the possible ruling with an official announcement being made on the 25th of this month.

“My source is good. There is a very strong expectation that this will happen. It is not 100% but it is almost”, Píffero claimed.
Although story broke this week, the club have been aware of the news for quite a while and the players were informed of this before last week’s game against Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires.

“We asked to all for absolute secrecy. There were 50 people in the dressing round and they did not leak anything”, he added.

The South American governing body, COMNEBOL are thought to have an extra three qualifying places to distribute ahead of next year’s competition following issues within the Peruvian Football Association.

Alex now joint top scorer in Copa Sudamericana

Alex’s impressive free-kick against Chivas last night takes the number 10 to the top of the Sudamericana goal scoring charts. Already Inter’s top scorer this season with 31 goals, his latest strike was Alex’s fourth of the competition now puts him level with four other players.

4 goals – Alex (Internacional), Carlos Alberto (Botafogo), Lázaga (Olímpia), Boselli (Estudiantes), Pavlovich (Argentinos Juniors)

Out of the five, only Alex, Boselli and Pavlovich remain in the competition.

Carvalho praises Tite’s work following exit of Abel Braga

Internacional advisor and former president Fernando Carvalho praised Tite after Inter’s impressive first leg victory in Guadalajara.

Carvalho was asked how difficult had it been for the club to recover from the departure of previous coach Abel Braga, who had led the club to the World Club Championship and had build the Inter squad at the start of the season.

“When such an important person, perhaps the biggest coach in the history of Internacional, the squad feels it. Now Tite has full knowledge of the dressing room. He now has command of his squad and has given them a tactical lesson”, stressed Carvalho, who refused to speculate on the coach’s long term future in view of the forthcoming presidential elections on 13th December.

“We don’t even know if we will remain, I’ll remain only if Vitório (Píffero) wins the election”, confirmed Carvalho.

Nilmar and Alex give Inter two goal cushion in Mexico

(Goal.com) Internacional picked up a valuable 2-0 away victory over Chivas de Guadalajara in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana semi-final in Mexico on Wednesday night. Inter now have great possibilities of reaching the final of the Copa Sudamericana after defeating Chivas de Guadalajara 2-0 at the Jalisco stadium in Mexico on Wednesday.

Nilmar (69') and Alex (79') scored for the side from Porto Alegre, in an even contest that was eventually won by the team who proved more effective when it came down to finding the back of the net.

Chivas, who eliminated River Plate in the quarter-finals, dominated their opponents at the beginning of the match, but although they created several clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities, they failed to take advantage of them. Star striker Omar Arellano was off form, and he wasted three incredible opportunities to put the Mexicans ahead.

At the other end, Inter began to come more into the match, and created opportunities of their own, to the frustration of the strong 40,000 home crowd. In the 69th minute Nilmar broke the deadlock for Inter, with a brilliant individual effort after receiving a good ball from Magrão.

After the goal both teams had their chances to score, but Inter came closest when an Andrezinho effort rocketed off the crossbar. Alex finally settled the result in the 79th minute when he curled in an extraordinary free-kick that left Chivas goalkeeper Victor Hernandez with no chance.

The second leg of the tie will be played at the Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre on the 19th of November.

The Sudamericana's other semi final between Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes is played later today.

Inter could be handed Libertadores lifeline

Journalist Wianey Carlet is reporting today that Inter could still be given an opportunity to qualify for the 2009 Copa Libertadores.

Carlet reports that CONMEBOL are considering allowing this year’s Copa Libertadores winners (LDU Quito of Ecuador) play the winners of the Copa Sudamericana, with the winners qualifying for next year’s Libertadores.

With Inter due to play in the Sudamericana semi-finals later today, news of the opportunity to compete in next year’s Copa Libertadores would be extremely well received by the club.

With the club entering its centenary year in 2009, the club had hoped to mark the occasion with a campaign in next year’s Copa Libertadores but it appeared the clubs hopes were ended when Inter’s failed to ensure a top four finish in the Brasileirão.

CONMEBOL's decision to award the Copa Sudamericana winners the chance of a place in South America’s most important club competitions comes after several of the nation’s major clubs have not treated the competition seriously, often fielding reserve teams.

Inter v Chivas

After a season of frustration in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Inter have however shown their true potential in the Copa Sudamericana. With many of the continent’s major clubs failing to make the Sudamericana their priority, Inter have thrived, so far comfortably defeating Grêmio, Universidad de Católica and Boca Juniors displaying, organisation, technical ability and focus. As the only Brazilian club remaining in the competition, Inter have shown they have all the nessecery ingredients to become the first club from Brazil to win the title.

Tonight, Inter face their most difficult task yet as they take on the Mexican side Chivas in Guadalajara (18:00 local time/ 22:00 Porto Alegre) in the first of the two legged semi-final at the Estádio Jalisco. Unlike previous opponents Boca, Chivas are treating the Sudamericana as a priority and are expected to field a strong side.

Inter’s arrival in Mexico yesterday was overshadowed by the absence of Andrés D’Alessandro. The Argentine was rule out after suffering from food poisoning and the absence of ‘El cabezón’ will be a big blow to Inter’s chances.

D’Alessandro aside and Tite has no other selection concerns. The disciplined European style defence Tite used to great effect in Buenos Aires against Boca is expected to be used once again with Bolívar, Marcão playing as full backs with Índio and Alvaro continuing their new partnership in the heart of the Inter defence in front of Lauro, who impressed in goal against Boca.

With D’Alessandro unavailable, much of the talk regarding team selection has focused on who would replace Inter’s number 15 with Andrezinho expected to get picked ahead of Taison. The rest of the midfield is expected to be Edinho, Magrão and Guiñazu. Having operated so well against Boca, Inter’s midfield once again are set to face another big test tonight.

Much of Inter’s joy will be how well Alex and Nilmar can penetrate the Chivas defence through Inter’s counter attacks. Alex has been in the best form of his career in recent weeks whilst Nilmar will be looking to use his pace to create problems for the Chivas back line.

Meanwhile, Chivas coach Efraín Flores is expected to be without three key players. Central defender Magallón and the defensive midfielder Pineda join striker, Nery Castillo on the absentee list, with Castillo involved with the Mexican national team.

Expected Line Up: Lauro, Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Marcão, Edinho, Magrão, Guiñazu, Andrezinho (Taison), Alex, Nilmar

Inter arrive in Guadalajara

After almost 24 hours of travelling, Inter have finally arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico ahead of tomorrow night’s game.

The squad appeared in good spirits as they were greeted at the airport by around 20 journalists although clearly fatigued after their long journey. The squad will train later today (22:30 Porto Alegre time) without D’Alessandro who was dramatically left in Porto Alegre after falling ill with a stomach complaint.

Ahead of arguably the biggest match of his Inter career, Tite spoke to the media earlier this afternoon regarding the absence of D’Alessandro and hinted that Andrezinho could well be his replacement.

“The main trait is someone who can dictate our rhythm but if I need another choice, I can opt for the pace of Taison”, Tite revealed.

Picture: Andrezinho could be celebrating his place in the Inter team tomorrow

Election process enters final stage

Following last night’s preliminary voting at the Beira-Rio, both candidates for the club’s presidency Vitório Píffero and Claude Bier reached the minimum number (25%) of votes.

The final election to confirm who will be Inter’s president for the next two years will be held on Saturday 13th December where according to Píffero, the club has 25,000 members who meet the voting conditions.

I hope to bring you more information on each of the candidates ahead of the main elections in December.

D’Alessandro ruled out of first leg

Tite’s preparations ahead of tomorrow’s semi final first leg have been dealt a huge blow when it was confirmed last night that Andrés D’Alessandro will be unavailable after falling ill.

Inter’s number 15 has remained in Porto Alegre whilst the squad travelled to Mexico as club doctor Pablo Rabello confirmed the Argentine’s absence. “He must have eaten something that was not right. He hasn’t suffered from vomiting or diarrhoea but he is weakened. He cannot be fed tomorrow which is what he would need if to play,” confirmed Rabello.

With the classy playmaker now unavailable, Tite has three options to choose from. Andrezinho, Taison or Daniel Carvalho all now have a chance of starting the match against Chivas. It is thought that D’Alessandro would be available for the second leg.

Álvaro and Bolívar discuss semi-final

Bandeirantes Radio spoke to central defender Álvaro as the squad completed training this morning at the Beira-Rio.
“The game is of obvious importance and we’re against a team with different characteristics. If we can get a positive result we are half way there. There are 180 minutes and this competition is the biggest game of the year for the squad”, confirmed Álvaro.

Meanwhile Bolívar was asked by Radio Gaúcho whether he would continue at right back as he did against Boca Juniors. “Tite likes to make a line of four defenders. In Europe they use two lines. It is a formation that is
more sold and protects those who want to play with freedom. If Tite decides that is better for the team, then I have to respect and accept it. The Copa Sudamericana title is longed for and we want to take our chance of being the first Brazilian club to conquer it”, Bolívar explained.

Inter set for Mexico as media build up begins

As Inter depart later today for Guadalajara ahead of Wednesday semi-final with Chivas, the media in both countries has began building up towards the game.

Zero Hora today explains that Inter’s nutritionist Lenice Carvalho has recommended that the squad take great care with their diets before the game. On arrival, club doctor Carlos Poisl will meet with the hotel kitchen staff and will instruct them on what the players are able to eat. Chilli, bacon and breads with papoula seeds cannot be consumed in order to avoid any stomach problems and the papoula seeds can affect anti-doping tests.

Meanwhile, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada reports that Inter’s opponents, Chivas, have made the Copa Sudamericana their priority and are even prepared to sacrifice their league campaign in their preparations for the semi-final. Chivas fielded a reserve side in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat against Puebla and are now in danger of being eliminated from the Mexican championship.

The Internacional squad will leave Porto Alegre at 19:30 today and fly from São Paulo later tonight before arriving in Mexico City at then travel to Guadalajara, where they expect to arrive at 09:00.

34ª Rodada round up

Another round of games and unsurprisingly, the top and bottom of the Campeonato Brasileiro once again changes.

With São Paulo winning on Saturday, both Palmeiras and Grêmio were in need of the victory when the two sides met at the Parque Antarctica but it was Grêmio, who took the points and moved in second place after Tcheco’s freekick somehow found itself in the back of the net. As Palmeiras fell into fourth spot, Cruzeiro kept their Brasileiro dreams alive with a 1-0 victory over Fluminense, thanks to Ramires’ second half goal. Whilst Fluminense now sit precariously above the relegation zone on goal difference, rivals Flamengo remained fourth as they defeated neighbours Botafogo. The Rubro-Negro (The Scarlet-Black) benefited from some fortunate refereeing decisions before substitute Kleberson converted a late penalty.

At the other end of the table, the future looks grim for bottom side Ipatinga. Thrashed 4-0 by Inter’s reserves, the Tigrão (Big Tiger) are six points away from safety with four games remaining and seem destined for Série B after just one season in the top flight. Ipatinga could well be joined by Figueirense who lost on Saturday to fellow strugglers Atlético-PR as plucky Portuguesa who also lost on Saturday and Náutico who played out a goalless draw against Coritiba in Paraná.

Elsewhere, Atlético-MG seem safe for another year after an impressive 1-0 away win against Vitória at the Barradão and Goiás once again failed to shake off their inconsistent tag as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Sport at the Ilha do Retiro. Sport took a two goal lead within 25 mins before Goiás pulled one back before have time to hand the Leão do Norte (Lion of the North) their first victory in eight matches.

34ª Rodada results: (Sat) Figueirense 0-2 Atlético-PR, Vasco 1-0 Santos, Portuguesa 2-3 São Paulo (Sun) Palmeiras 0-1 Grêmio, Cruzeiro 1-0 Fluminense, Coritiba 0-0 Náutico, Sport 2-1 Goiás, Botafogo 0-1 Flamengo, Vitória 0-1 Atlético-MG, Internacional 4-0 Ipatinga

Inter reserves crush Série B bound Ipatinga

Inter wasted no time in repeating the form they showed in their midweek victory over Boca Juniors by comfortably defeating Ipatinga 4-0 at a deserted Beira-Rio last night.

Ipatinga arrived in Porto Alegre starved of points and their coach Enderson Moreira would have been more optimistic after seeing Inter’s line up. With only goalkeeper Lauro remaining in the team from the side which performed so well in Buenos Aires, Tite rested his first choice players, opting to give youth and reserves the chance to impress.

Any hopes Ipatinga had of salvaging anything from the game however were quashed when defender Leo Oliveira was issued a straight red card after just 15 mins after bringing down the young Colorado, Sandro.

Inter took just five minutes to take the lead against ten men when Andrezinho (20) scored his second goal of the season, unleashing a powerful shot from 20 yards into the top of the net. Inter’s lead was to be doubled minutes later when Taison (27) took advantage of a long clearance to break through the Ipatinga half by firing in a low shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner of the goal. Avenging a surprise away defeat earlier in the season to the Brasilerao’s bottom, Inter continued to show no mercy as the Colorado further extended their lead nine minutes later. Sandro (36) scored his second professional goal in five appearances, heading his own rebound into the net from close range following a free kick.

Inter continued the rout in the second half as highly rated young striker Guto (60) side-footed Inter’s fourth, his first senior goal.

The victory moves Inter up into sixth spot as the club now prepare for Wednesday's semi final first leg with Chivas. The defeat does little to help Ipatinga leaving the Minas Gerias based club adrift at the bottom of the table.

Inter’s semi final opponents for the Copa Sudamericana, Chivas were defeated earlier today in the Mexican Primera Division.

The Guadalajara club who are currently struggling in Group B of the Mexican championship were earlier defeated 2-1 away to Puebla. Chivas found themselves two nil down following two first half goals from the home side, but scored in the 90th minute through Santana.

Inter v Ipatinga

After Tite yesterday confirmed that Inter will fully turn their attentions to Wednesdays Sudamericana semi-final tie in Mexico, Inter are expected to field a reserve side for this evenings game with the Brasileirão’s bottom side Ipatinga.

The news will be welcomed by Ipatinga who are desperately seeking points in their battle against the drop to Série B.

In training yesterday, Tite worked closely with what was a reserve side with only Lauro remaining in the line up from Thursday’s victory over Boca.

Inter play down Índio rumours

Inter have dismissed speculation linking defender Índio with a move away from the Beira-Rio. Bandeirantes radio reported yesterday that Al Jazira, coached by former Inter coach, Abel Braga had expressed an interest in signing Índio who is contract expires at the end of the year. However club advisor Fernando Carvalho spoke to the media as the Inter squad arrived back in Porto Alegre.

“This situation does not exist, Índio has another year remaining on his contract. At the moment we are not dealing with any contracts. We focused on the Copa Sudamericana, the end of the Brasileirão and the club elections”, declared Carvalho.

Índio was also quick to diffuse any rumours. “I know nothing about this at all. You’ve caught me by surprise speaking to me about this. I have a contract with Inter until the end of 2009, this negotiation depends on Inter”, explained the centre back.

34ª Rodada Preview

The Campeonato Brasileirão enters it’s final five rounds this weekend and the fight for both the title and relegation is still very much alive.

Tonight’s fixtures focus very much on the relegation battle with four of teams fighting for survival all in action. In Santa Catarina, Figueirense play Atlético-PR with both teams currently in the bottom four whilst Vasco, also fighting for their Série A lives face mid-table Santos at the São Januário. Santos themselves are only five points off the drop zone. Portuguesa who find themselves once again edging closer to the bottom face a difficult task as they welcome first placed São Paulo to the Estádio do Canindé. A win for São Paulo is a must with just five point’s separating the Brasileirão’s top five sides.

On Sunday the evening’s crunch clash see’s second place Palmeiras play third placed Grêmio at the Palestra Itália. A win for either side could see them top the championship at the end of the round with many suggesting Grêmio are running out of steam as the championship nears the end. Fourth placed Cruzeiro meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back after their shock 3-0 defeat to Goiás last weekend when they meet struggling Fluminense in Belo Horizonte, themselves desperate for points. Five placed Flamengo face a short trip across town to the Engenhão when they visit rivals Botafogo who will be looking to bounce back after their Copa Sudamericana exit midweek. In northern Brazil, neither team has much to play for when Sport take on Goiás whilst in the north east, Vitória face Atlético-MG. A win for either side should be enough to secure their Série A place for next season. Finally at the Beira-Rio, Inter’s attentions turn to the Brasileirão after their impressive midweek victory over Boca Juniors. Their opponents remain bottom of the table and are desperate for points whilst Inter will be look to avenge an embarrassing away defeat to Ipatinga earlier the season.

Alex praises Boca spirit

Speaking shortly after the game to Fox Sports, Alex, who scored the second of Inter’s goals last night, spoke highly of Boca.

“We knew that we have difficult moments but could get a victory if we had quality in our counterattacks. This is what we had planned.”

Speaking about Inter’s opponents, Alex praised the Argentines. “Boca Juniors showed that beyond ability they have competitiveness. They give you attention and have concentration and they never give up. Inter have created this mentally since it we were World Club champions and we’re using this in the continental competitions.

Carvalho and Píffero taunt Boca and Grêmio

Club advisor Fernando Carvalho and Inter president Vitório Píffero were quick to taunt both opponents Boca Juniors and gaúcho rivals Grêmio after the game.
Boca had questioned the attitude of Inter ahead of their preparations for the second leg as the Inter squad were all given visa’s for Mexico, the likely destination if Inter were to advance past Boca.

“It really is a historical result. They said that Boca had a sign over Inter, perhaps they did and we needed to learn. Everyone knows that to decide the tie here is difficult. Now we go to use our visa. Many people questioned this but it was logistical and now we go to use our passport”, declared Carvalho who was then asked if he could explain why Inter perform differently in the Brasileirão compared to the Sudamericana. “The team formed in the middle of the Brasileirão, at the moment these players are now gelling and we start to play well. To keep the motivation in a run of games for points is more difficult. In knock out games it is easier”, he explained. “I always want to taste success. We want to win the Sudamericana as we wanted to win the Brasileirão, but it can’t happen. The victory today was spectacular”, added Carvalho.

Club president Píffero meanwhile was quick to make reference to rivals Grêmio who had along with Inter, had previously been defeated at the Bombonera. Píffero claimed that Inter’s victory gave honour to Rio Grande do Sul.

Tite- “Epic victory for Inter”

Tite spoke to the media at the Bombonera following the 2-1 victory and was quick to praise his side. “We were mobile, played with direction and have a group of players who understand that to play football we have to calm, even in the pressure of playing in a temple to football. This is a maturity process”, he explained.

Tite was then asked over his surprise selection which saw Angelo dropped leaving Bolívar to play at right back. “I wanted a line of four that could play the aerial ball and cover the opposition’s full back. It is nothing to do personally with the player, but I wanted to us to have more consistency in defence.”

When asked whether Bolívar would remain as a full back, Tite chose his words carefully. “I’ve talked with Bolívar, the directors have talked with him. I know that he produces more as a centre back. But he was a full back for this game. Now we have to go and think how we organise and what is better for Internacional. What may not be best for me, can be best for Inter”

Tite was finally asked whether he would prefer to play Chivas or River Plate in the semi finals. “It was an epic victory for Internacional”, he declared.

Inter set for Chivas in semi final

Inter will face Mexican opposition in the Copa Sudamericana semi final after Guadalajara based side, Chivas advanced through, defeating River Plate.

Chivas who won the first leg in Argentina 2-1, allowed River to take a 2-0 lead but the Mexican’s came back to earn a 2-2 draw. The results see’s Chivas through to the semi finals, winning 4-3 on aggregate.

In the Copa Sudamericana’s other semi final, Estudiantes meet Argentinos Juniors.

Super Inter advance through to semis

Internacional have qualified through to the Copa Sudamericana semi finals following an impressive 2-1 victory at the Bombonera. A resilient and impressive performance from the Colorado was capped off by second half goals from Magrão and Alex whilst goalkeeper Lauro also impressed.

Ahead of the game, Tite named a surprise in a his team with Bolívar replacing Angelo at right back allowing Álvaro to come into the side at the heart of the defence. Tite’s decision proved effective with the Colorado defence proving to be resilient against Boca side which had Riquelme on the bench. With little clear cut openings, much of the Boca fans frustration was taken out on former River Plate star, Andrés D’Alessandro. With Inter playing patiently probing the Argentines with counter attacks, Inter would have been the more satisfied team as the teams went in at half time with the score goalless.

The travelling Inter support would not have long to wait to celebrate in the second half when Magrão (48) put Inter ahead. With Nilmar having whipped in a right wing cross, Magrão saw his effort strike the bar but made sure on the second attempt, heading the Colorado into the lead. Inter’s lead wasn’t to last long however as within minutes, the Argentines were awarded a highly fortunate penalty. Boca substitute Juan Riquelme (57) leveled, slotting the ball just past Lauro who was at full stretch.

With Boca now losing 3-1 on aggregate, the home side pushed forward but again found themselves frustrated by Inter’s solid defence and goalkeeper Lauro who was in superb form. As Inter continued with their counter attacking tactic, it was only time before they would create another opportunity and Inter secured their place into the last four of the competition when inform Alex (72) finished from D’Alessandro’s pass.

Can anyone find any good quality highlights online? Globo does not appear to have them.

Boca Juniors v Inter

Having defeated Boca at the Beira-Rio two weeks ago, Inter travel to Boca’s world famous Bombonera with every chance of advancing through tonight’s second leg (21:00 Porto Alegre time (GMT+2).

With two goals from Alex giving Inter a 2-0 first leg lead against a weakened Boca side, anything better than a two goal defeat would see the Colorado qualify for the semi finals. Success tonight could give Inter the momentum to become the first Brazilian club to lift the Copa Sudamericana whilst a defeat would mark the end of a disappointing season and could spell the end of Tite’s time at the club.

Having had little to play for in the Brasileirão since Náutico all but ended any hopes of a top four finish, Tite has been able to prepare for his squad for the second leg. Nilmar has missed Inter’s last two matches through injury but is available, whilst D’Alessandro and Índio were also rested in last week’s defeat at São Paulo.

The squad completed their final training session last night at the Bombonera and worked through set pieces and also penalties. It was noted by several players that the Bombonera turf is in good condition with the grass cut short. With D’Alessandro again being antagonized throughout the session by Boca supporters, Inter’s playmaker remained calm despite also recieving attention from Boca fans when the squad arrived at Buenos Aires airport. “It is normal. I was a River Plate player. We are concentration on obtaining the result”.

Several of the squad have experience of playing at the Bombonera. D’Alessandro has scored against Boca in the Clássico with River and with San Lorenzo whilst fellow Argentine, Pablo Guiñazu also has experience of playing Boca at their home. Of the Brazilians, Alex, Edinho, Clemer, Bolívar and Magrão have all played at the Bombonera but without success. Inter’s previous visits to the Bombonera have been without victory having been eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana twice by Boca, suffering defeats of 4-1 and 4-2.

Although Tite will not confirm his team until the shortly before kick-off, there are not expected to any surprises in the line up. Lauro will continue in goal behind a back four of, Angelo, Índio, Bolívar and Marcão who is expected to keep his place in the team despite the availability of Gustavo Nery. Inter’s midfield will feature two Argentines. D’Alessandro and Guiñazu will play on the left and right whilst Edinho and Magrão will play in the centre. Inter’s preferred strike partnership of Alex and Nilmar will be reunited with Nilmar recovering from a thigh injury.

Boca are once again expected to field several reserves despite needing a three goal lead to obtain victory. Carlos Ischia’s team is also unconfirmed although Riquelme, who has asked to play, will start the match on the bench. Boca are currently second on goal difference of the Argentine Primera División after defeating leaders San Lorenzo 1-0 on the weekend.

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Ângelo, Índio, Bolívar, Marcão, Edinho, Magrão, D’Alessandro, Guiñazu, Alex, Nilmar

Colorado’s travel to Buenos Aires

More than 1,500 supporters are expected to make the journey from Rio Grande do Sul to Buenos Aires ahead of tonight’s huge game.

Many supporters will fly from Porto Alegre direct to the Argentine capital whilst many face a 20 hour bus journey.

Tite admits future depends on Sudamericana title

Speaking to Radio Bandeirantes, Tite has for the first time discussed his future at the Inter and acknowledged that his future heavily relies on whether he can lead the Inter to be the first Brazilian club to lift the Copa Sudamericana.

Tite also hinted that differences within the squad have affected the team’s progress. “I’ve made my assessment. We work with 42 players and that has it’s pro’s and cons but football is about now. Look at Fluminense, they were doing great and now their fighting against relegation. Whether I remain depends on what we achieve and what I’ve done at the end of the season”, Tite explained.

Build up: Inter squad set for Buenos Aries

A twenty-two man Inter squad will shortly board their flight to Buenos Aires at Porto Alegre’s Salgado Filho airport ahead of tomorrow’s quarter final tie with Boca Juniors.

After arriving in the Argentina capital, the squad will train at Boca’s La Bombonera this evening (18:30) as they complete their preparations for the game.

Having registered 25 players for the Copa Sudamericana, only Agenor (third choice goalkeeper), Ricado Lopes (injured) and Adriano (out of favour) will not travel.

Full squad:
Goalkeepers: Lauro, Clemer
Full backs: Ângelo, Marcão, Gustavo Nery, Ramon
Centre backs: Índio, Bolívar, Danny Morais, Álvaro
Centre midfielders: Sandro, Guiñazu, Edinho, Magrão
Attacking midfielders: Alex, D’Alessandro, Andrezinho, Rosinei, Taison
Strikers: Daniel Carvalho, Luiz Carlos, Nilmar

Following the squads final training session yesterday afternoon at the Beira-Rio, concerns were raised when Nilmar failed to train with the rest of the squad. The striker who has not played since Inter’s 2-2 draw with Atlético-MG last month was quick to rule out any doubts. “I’ve rested all those day’s and now I hope to have a good game at the Bombonera”, he declared.

Meanwhile, Alex who is almost certain to start alongside Nilmar tomorrow night has also given the Colorado a boost. After the midfielder’s recent involvement with the Seleção, it was suggested that Alex would be unavailable if Inter were to advance to the semi-final as Brazil’s friendly against Portugal clashes with the second leg.

Alex however was quick to commit himself to Inter, “How could I miss such an opportunity? If was Kaka and had a guaranteed place, fine. But today, I have to think differently. It’s a pity, I will be cheering but half of me will be happy and half of me will not. Inter is giving me this and I think that everyone involved should be enjoying it together.”

Edinho linked with move to Holland

The newspaper Correio do Povo is reporting today that Edinho could be the first player to leave the club at the end of the season after being linked with a move to Europe.

Reports suggest that Gerard Villar, the technical director of Dutch club FC Twente was in Porto Alegre to watch Inter’s first leg match with Boca Juniors. FC Twente are currently sixth place in the Dutch First Division and it is thought that the Dutch club could make an official offer next week.

Inter are thought to be to value Edinho at around €3 million.

Article now available on Inter Globoesporte blog!

As I recently mentioned, I am now writing a weekly article for the Internacional fan’s blog on the Globoesporte site.

From today, the article will be available each Tuesday, written in Portuguese.

Thanks once again to Mateus Reck who regularly writes the blog for his help with translating.

You can view the article here.

Riquelme expected to feature against Inter

According to Argentine newspaper Olé, Riquelme will at least be named on the bench for Inter’s visit to the Bombonera. Boca coach Carlos Ischia confirmed that the playmaker will go into ‘concentration’ with the Boca squad, but he does not yet know if he will start the match.

After fielding a mixed team in the first leg defeat against Inter, Ischia’s team for Thursday night is under speculation. Only Noir, who was dismissed for his challenge on Magrão is unavailable.

Claude Bier, “I will not continue with Tite”

Inter presidential candidate Claude Bier spoke to Radio Gaúcho late yesterday and gave a foresight of his intentions if was elected as the club’s new president.

“If I am elected, I will not continue with Tite. We need a trainer who closes the gap on the top teams and does not allow the club to rely on other results”, declared Bier who is representing the Inter 2000 group.

Bier said he was looking to improve and re-structure the club’s administration. Claude Bier will go head to head with current Inter president, Vitório Piffero ahead of the clubs centenary.

Inter could face Palmeiras or Botafogo in Sudamericana

With Inter need a result better than a three goal defeat to advance past Boca Juniors, the Colorado were expecting to face either River Plate or Chivas in the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals. However, it now appears that Inter could feature in an all-Brazilian semi-final against either Brasileirão chasing Palmeiras or Botafogo as rules stipulate that if two clubs from same country must play each other if they enter the semi-final.

After the first legs, Botafogo are currently losing 2-0 to Estudiantes whilst Palmeiras are losing 1-0 to Argentinos Juniors.

Philip de Oliveira and Interaction withdraw presidency bid

One of the three initial candidates for the club’s presidency withdrew today leaving just Claude Bier as the sole representative to challenge the current Inter president, Vitório Píffero.

Philip de Oliveira who was representing the ‘Interaction’ party withdrew from the elections after the Interaction party decided to share their votes with Claude Bier, the candidate of the Inter 2000 group in order to make a more significant challenge to the current presidency.

“After some meetings, we decided to withdraw our candidacy due to the amount of council members that the opposition has. Interaction has 30 members and Inter 2000 has more than 30. One of our aims is democratization therefore we have decided to make give our vote to a candidate which has similar ideas. Therefore we will now recommend votes for Claude Bier but will not be part of the Inter 2000 party”, Bier explained.

What are your views on the elections for the club presidency? Who do you favour? Please feel free to share your comments and opinions.

Poll result: “Clemer should be replaced”

Experienced goalkeeper Clemer has no future at Inter and should now be replaced. That is the view of just over half of you who voted in the blog’s recent poll.

The poll was added to the blog after a series of errors saw Clemer replaced in the team by recent signing Lauro and with his contract expiring at the end of the year, it is now uncertain whether Clemer will be offered an extension.

56% (148) felt that Clemer should be replaced whilst 44% (119) felt that Clemer should remain at the club.

Thanks to the 267 of you who participated in poll. Another poll will be appearing shortly.

Gustavo Nery awaits Tite decision / Magrão returns

Left back Gustavo Nery must wait for Tite to announce his line up to see whether he will return to the side for Thursday’s match with Boca Juniors following injury.

Gustavo Nery is competing for the left back slot along with Marcão who has played in Nery’s absence. “For me it is important as I have never played at the Bombonera. I am waiting, I have trained and will have to wait. It will be a difficult match, where the pressure will be on. But the group is prepared for this confrontation. I am calm as I was with the injury but now it is a question of the coach, whom knows what’s best for the team”, said Gustavo Nery.

Meanwhile, Magrão is also set to strengthen Inter's squad for Thursday's key fixture in Argentina by returning to full fitness. After missing last night's match with São Paulo, Magrão could start for Inter against Boca.

33ª Rodada Round up

Another round of games and the Brasileirão title race is once again split wide open with the top four winning, drawing and losing. This morning the top of the Brasileirão is led by two Paulista (São Paulo state) clubs with São Paulo now sitting in first place with a point advantage over Palmeiras who occupy second spot.

At the Morumbi over 54,000 São Paulo supporters saw their side move top of the championship last night following a comfortable victory over Internacional. With Inter’s thoughts clearly on Thursday’s Sudamericana clash with Boca Juniors, São Paulo took the full points with goals from Borges, Dagoberto and Hugo. Palmeiras, now second, also picked up three points as they defeated rivals Santos. Kleber gave Palmeiras the lead after just two minutes but Santos levelled early in the second half through Bruno. Palmeiras then dramatically re-took the lead when Lima snatched the points for Palmeiras in the 90th min.

Grêmio who were leading the championship at the start of the round, are now third and two points off São Paulo after they could only manage a draw against struggling Figueirense in Porto Alegre. Inter slump to defeat at the Estádio Morumbi

São Paulo took full advantage of an experimental Inter side last comfortably defeating the Colorado 3-0. The victory puts São Paulo top of the Brasileirão to the delight of both sets of supporters with Grêmio now dropping down the table.

With many Inter supporters even hoping for São Paulo, few eye brows would’ve been raised when Tite fielded a patched up side, no doubt influenced by next Thursday’s match with Boca Juniors. Sandro continued his involvement with the first team, starting in central midfield, replacing Andrezinho. Another youngster was also given a chance as Walter started alongside Alex, with Daniel Carvalho on the bench. In defence Álvaro completed his return from injury with Índio rested.

This doesn’t exist in soccer. All that exists is a great seriousness”, commented the São Paulo coach. There are insignificant.” It remains to be seen however what team Tite decides to select. Next week Inter travel to Buenos Aires for their second leg match with Boca Juniors.
