Grêmio victory ensures clássico

Grêmio defeated Veranópolis 1-0 last night to set up the second Gre-Nal of 2009.

Grêmio must now travel to the Beira-Rio for Sunday’s clássico which will decide the Taça Fernando Carvalho.

The first Gre-Nal of the year was played in Erechim earlier this month, which Inter of course won 2-1.

Meanwhile, Inter’s preparations for Sunday were boosted with the news that central defender Álvaro will be available to play. Álvaro had been cited as a possible doubt for the game as a result of a thigh injury. However after attending an examination at hospital he has been cleared to play.

Inter prepare for possible Gre-Nal

Inter begin their preparations this afternoon for first final of the 2009 Gauchão.

Grêmio are Inter’s likely opponents for the final as they face Veranópolis at the Estádio Olímpico this evening in the competitions second semi-final.

Giovanni Luigi revealed that Inter are fully prepared to face their arch rivals for the second time in the competition.

“We know that inside the Olímpico Grêmio are the favourites to win (against Veranópolis). At this moment we are in preparations for the Gre-Nal on Sunday”, he explained.

For this afternoons training session, the players who played the full match will participate in light training only.

Tite is not expected to face any major decisions ahead of the possible clássico with only D’Alessandro definitely ruled out.

D’Alessandro picked up his third yellow card of the competition last night and will be suspended for the final. Andrezinho is widely expected to replace the Argentine.

Inter book place in Taça Fernando Carvalho final

Internacional have secured their place in Sunday’s Taça Fernando Carvalho final as second half goals from Nilmar and D’Alessandro saw off Novo Hamburgo last night at the Beira-Rio.

Inter now await either Grêmio or Veranópolis in Sunday’s final at the Beira-Rio, which will confirm the winners of the first stage of the Gauchão.

Despite the victory however, frustrations amongst the Inter supporters remained evident as their side were unable to break down the visitors until well into the second half.

Inter pressured the Novo Hamburgo goal throughout the first half but a combination of stubborn defending and poor finishing ensured the side’s remained level, with Nilmar wasting two good chances and Lauro pulling off a fantastic save to prevent Novo Hamburgo themselves from scoring.

To the frustration of the Colorado support, the second half continued in similar fashion with Nilmar unable to convert Taison’s inch perfect pass, missing from just yards out. Inter’s goal finally came though just after the hour mark.

As Novo Hamburgo defended desperately, Kléber’s cross was scrambled away but only to Taison who’s shot was blocked. The ball fell kindly to Kléber who knocked the ball into the path of Nilmar (62) to finish his fifth goal of the championship.

Having gone a goal ahead, Inter continued to dominate but continued to spurn chances. The Colorado finally put the result beyond reach after substitute striker Alecsandro was awarded a penalty which D’Alessandro (90) converted with his left foot, sending Novo Hamburgo ‘keeper Flávio the wrong way.

Inter v Novo Hamburgo

Inter enter a crucial phase at this early stage of the season, with tonight’s visit of Novo Hamburgo being the first of a possible three decisive games (19:30 local time).

Victory tonight over Novo Hamburgo would send Inter through to the first final of this year’s Campeonato Gaúcho where they face either Grêmio or Veranópolis in Sunday’s Taça Fernando Carvalho decider.

Despite being close to claiming the first Gauchão title of the year and amidst the departure of Alex, the Inter squad have been criticised heavily in their last two games. Central defender-cum-right back Bolívar has in particular being targeted by unsatisfied supporters for his unwillingness to attack down Inter’s right hand side.

Tite however is expected to show faith with the side which defeated Ulbra 2-1 in searing heat last Sunday which would see Bolívar retain his place in the team.

D’Alessandro who has also been struggling to find his best form in recent games is expected to feature once again but the most welcoming name in the Colorado midfield could be that of young defensive midfielder Sandro. The Brazilian Under 20 captain completed his first match of the season for Inter against Ulbra and his solid defensive presence allows the Inter midfield to take more shape with improved balance.

Nilmar, another who has failed to find his best form in recent games will continue to play upfront alongside the championships top goalscorer, Taison. Unfit Alecsandro and promising attacking midfielder Giuliano are expected to start on the bench and could well feature if the Colorado are struggling to break down Novo Hamburgo.

Novo Hamburgo arrive at the Beira-Rio in somewhat of a crisis after head coach Gilmar Iser walked out on the club earlier this week to take up the vacant hot seat at Juventude. Assistant manager, Pablo Turra will take charge on a temporary basis and he is not to make any major changes to this side. Novo Hamburgo are expected to line up in a 4-4-2 formation with star striker Jandson who has scored six goals in the Gauchão, looking to cause Inter problems.

Novo Hamburgo qualified for the semi-final stage after finishing second in Group B.

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Kléber, Sandro, Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro, Taison, Nilmar

Inter aim for Gauchão final

Inter’s preparations for making the first final of the 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho will take a step closer in training later today, as Tite is expected to confirm the team which will play in tomorrow’s semi-final against Novo Hamburgo.

A victory in tomorrow night’s game at the Beira-Rio would see Inter play either Grêmio or Veranópolis in Sunday’s Taça Fernando Carvalho final. Early suggestions indicate that Tite is unlikely to make any changes from the team which defeated Ulbra earlier this week. This would mean that Bolívar would continue at right back, despite receiving criticism from Inter supporters in recent games who complain of the lack of attacking options on the right hand side.

Tite is expect to reveal his team to the Inter squad in this afternoon’s training session as preparations for the semi final continue.

Meanwhile, this morning’s session featured both Danny Morais and Clemer. Central defender Danny is in recovering from an ankle injury whilst goalkeeper Clemer continues his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery in December.

Novo Hamburgo in coaching reshuffle

Inter’s opponents for Thursday’s Taça Fernando Carvalho semi-final, Novo Hamburgo have been dealt a blow in their preparations for their visit to the Beira-Rio.

Novo Hamburgo’s coach Gilmar Iser confirmed this morning that he will be leaving the club to take over at Juventude. Novo Hamburgo are yet to officially announce their new coach but it is thought that current assistant manager, Pablo Turra will take charge against Inter.

Lauro issues Inter rallying call

Goalkeeper Lauro has called for an improvement ahead of Inter’s crucial forthcoming fixtures with Novo Hamburgo and União Rondonópolis.

Speaking to Radio Bandeirantes, Lauro urged that the team to tighten up defensively as the team received criticism for poor defending in their last two games.

“We cannot commit defensive errors at the moment. We have two important games at home and we cannot make a mistake. If this happens we are out”, explained Lauro, who has been an ever-present this season for Inter.

“Regardless of the team, we have to find the right balance”, he added.

Inter face to decisive matches at the Beira-Rio with the Gauchão semi-final with Novo Hamburgo on Thursday before needing to overturn a one goal deficient against União Rondonópolis in the Copa do Brasil second leg tie next Wednesday.

Inter rule out Noir move

Inter vice president Fernando Carvalho has dismissed reports that the club are looking to resurrect transfer negotiations for Boca Juniors striker Ricardo Noir.

Internacional were close to signing Ricardo Noir earlier this year but a last minute u-turn from Boca led to the transfer collapsing. However following the sudden departure of Alex, reports in Argentina have again linked Inter with the striker with Rubén Schwab, a representative for the player, claiming that a deal could now be agreed.

Speaking after yesterday’s victory over Ulbra, Carvalho ruled out any move for the Argentine.

“He was not offered to us and Inter have not made an approach for him”, confirmed Carvalho.

Despite Inter’s unbeaten run in the Campeonato Gaúcho, the side have been criticised for missing too many chances with many supporters demanding to see a new striker added to the squad.

Tite defends squad

Tite spoken to the press following yesterday afternoons defeat and defended his squad against growing criticism from the supporters.

An increasing number of Inter fans are voicing their discontent as Inter fail to convert possession into goals with Bolívar in particular being targeted.

“The supporters deserve our respect and we always want to be at our best because we understand the size of the club and the results Internacional requires”, said Tite.

Tite also spoke highly of Sandro following the young midfielders first Inter performance of the season, “He is a strong defensively and is good in the air, he also has a good sense of anticipation with strength and quality passing.”

Tite was also quick to answer why the team were not playing at their best.

“We have made three changes to the side with the exit of Marcão, Edinho and Alex so it has altered the structure and we now have Sandro in the side. The team also suffered because we did not hurt the opposition enough. We are still searching for the required standard but in football we need to remain calm so this can happen”, commented the Inter coach.

Colorado return to winning ways in Gauchão

Inter put an end to a difficult week this afternoon as the Colorado booked their place in the Taça Fernando Carvalho semi final with a 2-1 victory over Ulbra in scorching hot Porto Alegre.

Tite’s team selection was of little surprise for tonight’s encounter at the Beira-Rio with Sandro coming into the midfield but it was another categorias de base product who made the headlines as 21 year old Taison played a hand in both Inter’s goals.

However, life at the Beira-Rio without Alex proved difficult with supporters impatient and evidently frustrated as Nilmar missed four chances and Bolívar, D’Alessandro and surprisingly Taison being targeted by the Colorado support.

Despite pressure from the crowd, the pacey attacker extended his lead at the top of the Gauchão top scorer list, adding his eighth of the championship shortly before half time. Taison (39) took full advantage of defensive blunder from Ulbra which allowed him to run through on goal unchallenged as the number seven rounded the keeper to neatly finish into an open net, and cue the now trademark dance.

For Inter’s second of the afternoon, Taison this time turned from goal scorer to goal creator as he delivered an inswinging corner which was met perfectly for central defender Índio (56) to claim his first of the season.

Thirteen minutes later however, a defensive lapse by Inter resulted in the Canoas based side to pull a goal back against the run of play. Tatá (69) somehow managed to find himself unchallenged to head in a driven ball across the Inter goalmouth from the right hand side.

Internacional will now face Novo Hamburgo in the semi final as they defeated Ypiranga in a surprising 3-0 win yesterday. Meanwhile Grêmio beat Juventude 2-0 in yesterday’s other quarter final tie and will face either Veranópolis or Santa Cruz who play today.

Inter v Ulbra

After a hectic week which included a shock cup defeat and the sudden departure of Alex, Inter must turn their attentions to the Campeonato Gaúcho this afternoon as the Colorado look to secure their in the semi finals of the Taça Fernando Carvalho (16:00 local time).

With Inter holding a closed training session yesterday, only the hotly tipped youngster Sandro has been confirmed by Tite as a definite starter. Sandro has been earmarked as a long term replacement for former captain Edinho who left the holding midfield role vacant when leaving for Italy in January.

Despite suffering their first defeat of the season to União Rondonópolis midweek, Inter will be approaching this afternoon’s match in a confident mood after comfortably beating Ulbra 5-1 during their group stage fixture.

Taison, who scored terrorised Ulbra last weekend, scoring twice, is expected to feature once again in a full strength Inter side. D’Alessandro who was criticised for his performance in Inter’s surprise 1-0 defeat to União on Wednesday will undoubtedly be looking to prove a point.

Ulbra meanwhile left it late to qualify for the quarter final stage and only confirmed their place in the final eight on Thursday after a 5-2 victory over Brasil de Pelotas.

Ulbra coach Beto Almeida is yet to confirm his team but he will be without right back Enrique and defensive midfielder Gavião. Dudu however is expected to return to the side in central defence.

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Kléber; Sandro, Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro; Taison, Nilmar

Sandro expected to start against Ulbra

Young defensive midfielder Sandro is expected to start tomorrow’s match against Ulbra as Inter look to re-adjust thier midfield following the sale of Alex.

Tomorrow’s Taça Fernando Carvalho quarter final has been somewhat overshadowed this week with the news of Alex's departure but Tite is confident Sandro can make the step up and establish himself as a first team regular.

“ Sandro has a lot of quality and a good range of passing. He understands what is nessecery of him. He also defends aerial ball’s very well”, explained Tite who also confirmed that Sandro will start tomorrow.

A full preview of tomorrow's quarter final will appear here tomorrow morning.

Píffero confirms Alex exit

Inter president Vitório Píffero has confirmed the sale of Alex to Spartak Moscow at a press conference at the Beira Rio.

With Alex revealing earlier today that an offer had been made for him, Internacional have now officially confirmed the deal.

“We foresaw this sale back in August. It was a proposal convenient for the club and the player. Both are satisfied”, confirmed Píffero.

When asked whether Inter would now be looking to sign a new player to fill Alex’s vacant number ten shirt, Píffero explained, “We already did this last year when we brought in D’Alessandro.”

Alex will cost Spartan Moscow € 5 million (over R$ 15 mill) to purchase Alex’s registration outright.

The player himself also spoke following Piffero’s confirmation, “One hour or another this would happen. It is hard to leave the club and this is how I’m feeling but the moment arrived and I leave satisfied for everything and for the chance and affection I have received here.”

Alex confirms Spartak offer

Attacking midfiedler Alex has confirmed to press that he is subject to an offer from Spartak Moscow, following reports yesterday that the Russian club had made a €5 million offer for the Colorado number ten.

Alex arrived at the Beira-Rio this morning for medical treatment under a cloud of intense speculation.

Upon arrival at the stadium, Alex refused to confirm negotiations when asked by the gathering press. However two hours later, after a reported meeting with the club’s directors, Alex confirmed to press that an offer had been made.

“Negotiations can happen at any time. I do not yet have many details but it gone through to me and the directors and it is genuine but nothing has been agreed”, explained the 27 year old.

Alex joined Internacional from Guarani in 2004. Alex initially struggled to make an impact at the Beira-Rio after struggling with repeated injuries but began to establish himself for the Colorado in 2006 winning a Libertadores and World Club Cup title.

Alex’s best form for Inter though came in 2008 when following the exit of Fernandão, Alex developed into a key player for the side and broke into the Brazil national squad. In 186 games, Alex scored 56 goals.

Alex set to leave Inter?

Reports emerged last night that Alex is close to completing a move to Spartak Moscow.

SportTV broke the story, claiming that the Alex will immediately leave Inter for the Russian club to sign a five year contract. Inter are thought to have agreed a fee of €5 million for Alex who broke into the Seleção last year.

Inter have denied any negotiations but according to Guaíba radio, the club are awaiting official documentation to confirm the transfer of one of Inter’s most popular and influential players.

There has been constant speculation surrounding Alex’s future and it is thought that club’s from England, Italy and Spain were close to signing the attacking midfielder before January’s transfer deadline.

Since the closure of the transfer window, Alex’s form has been somewhat unfairly criticised in the Brazilian media. Alex did not feature in Wednesday's cup defeat to União Rondonópolis but scored twice last weekend against Caxias, which could turn out to be his last match for the Colorado.

If Alex does complete a move to Russia, then he will be reunited with former team mate Daniel Carvalho who play’s for Spartak’s cross-city rivals, CSKA.

Gustavo Nery returns to training

Gustavo Nery returned to training yesterday and denied reports that he is set to leave the club.

The left back had been on leave from Inter to sort out personal issues in São Paulo. However, speculation has been rife that Gustavo Nery who is yet to feature for the Colorado this season, was close to finding a new club.

“I had to decide personal things. I had various proposals at the beginning of the year, but I have a contract here. I asked for the club to free me to sort out some things which were personal but only this. Now I am working hard to play at full back or midfield. I am awaiting my chance”, revealed Gustavo Nery to Bandeirantes Radio.

After joining Inter last August from Fluminense, Gustavo Nery has lost his place in the side and with the arrival of both Kléber and Marcelo Cordiero, his long term future at the Beira-Rio remains unclear.

União stun Inter in Copa do Brasil

União Rondonópolis sprung a major upset last night as they defeated Inter 1-0 in the first round of the Copa do Brasil.

With only Alex missing, Inter were at a near full strength side with D’Alessandro and Alecsandro both recalled to the side. However Inter’s hopes of eliminating the Matto Grosso based club were dashed late on when Diogo scrambled in the only goal of game. União must now travel to the Beira-Rio for the second leg in two weeks time.

Paulinho loan to Caxias falls through

Internacional have revealed that Paulinho’s proposed loan to SER Caxias has fallen through.

Caxias were thought to be close to completing the loan signing of Paulinho as well as three other Inter youth players, but the move cannot go ahead as Paulinho also already played for Inter in the Campeonato Gaúcho against Santa Cruz making him eligible to play for another club.

Inter are thought to be keen to loan out Paulinho to allow the defensive midfielder to gain experience but any future deal would now have to be agreed with a club outside of Rio Grande do Sul.

União Rondonópolis v Inter

Inter kick off their 2009 Copa do Brasil campaign tonight against Série C side União Rondonópolis (22:00 local time). Inter will be fully aware that success in the cup competition will guarantee Copa Libertadores football next season.

Having only played within Rio Grande do Sul so far this year, Inter could not wish to travel to a more welcoming city for an away fixture. Twenty-five percent of Rondonópolis’ population is thought to be Gaúcho and even the club’s president, Arni Spiering is an Inter supporter and socio!

Despite the expected warm welcome at the 16,000 capacity Estádio Luthero Lopes, Inter arrive in Mato Grosso purely on business and Tite is expected to field a very strong side. In addition, a two goal advantage or more will result in the return leg being cancelled. This would be welcomed by Inter as the club attempt to reduce any fixture pile up at this early stage of the season. A clear victory tonight would see the Colorado face either Paraná based J.Malucelli, or Guarani in the second round of the competition.

With almost a fully fit squad, only Alex is unavailable to Tite with the midfielder complaining of a muscular problem and not travelling to Mato Grosso. Andrezinho is most likely to replace Alex in midfield, whilst D’Alessandro is also expected to return to the side tonight after missing the last two matches.

In defence, Kléber who impressed against Caxias on Sunday, is expected to remain at left back alongside Bolivar at right back and Índio and Álvaro in the centre of defence.

Magrão and Guiñazu both continue in central midfield, playing behind Andrezinho and D’Alessandro whilst Taison will start alongside Nilmar up front.

União Rondonópolis are currently fifth out of eight teams competing in Group B of the Campeonato Matogrossense (W1 D4 L1). União face Inter after wto consecutive 0-0 draws against Araguaia and most recently, R.E.C.

In preparation for Inter, recently appointed coach Zé Humberto has signed former Vasco centre back Odvan last week in an effort to bolster União’s defence.

Expected Line Up: Lauro, Bolívar, Álvaro, Índio, Kléber; Magrão, Guiñazu, Andrezinho, D’Alessandro; Taison, Nilmar

Alex ruled out for Copa do Brasil

Inter fitness coach Fábio Mahseredjian has confirmed that Alex will not feature in tomorrow night’s Copa do Brasil tie with União Rondonópolis.

Alex, who scored twice in Sunday’s impressive 5-1 victory over Caxias, is thought to be suffering from muscular discomfort to his right thigh and earlier today the club’s medical staff ruled out any possibility of the playing tomorrow.

Andrezinho is expected to replace Alex with Inter likely to field a full strength side at the Estadio Luthero Lopes.

Caxias loan four Inter players

Caxias are looking to rebuild their squad after a poor start to the Campeonato Gaucho and have signed no less than, four Internacional players on loan.

The highest profile deal is categorias de base product Paulinho who is a defensive midfielder. Paulinho is thought to be close to breaking into the Inter senior squad but faces competition from Sandro.

Also moving to the Estádio Centenário are three player’s from the Inter ‘juniores’ side, goalkeeper Muriel, full-back Daniel and Jhon who is a striker.

Marcão completes Palmeiras transfer

Vice president Fernando Carvalho has confirmed the deal between Internacional and Palmeiras for 33 year old left back Marcão.

Speaking after Inter’s impressive 5-1 victory over Caxias last night, Carvalho revealed, “Internacional have already agreed a deal with Palmeiras for Marcão. The deal is only lacking a medical examination. In the squad we already have two other players of quality in Kléber and Marcelo Cordeiro.”

Marcão is expected to be officially presented to the media by his new club later today, but speaking to Bandeirantes Radio, Marcão revealed that he was sad to be leaving the Beira-Rio.

“On Thursday I received an offer. I talked with the staff at Inter. My contract finishes here in December and Palmeiras have offered me two years which would offer my family more stability. I am heartbroken to be leaving Inter but now my time there is finished and I will continue with my life”, explained Marcão.

Having been a regular for Inter in 2008 making 35 appearances, Marcão’s chances of first team football this season appear to be limited with the arrival of both Kléber and Marcelo Cordeiro.

Marcão joined Inter from Atlético Paranaense in 2007 after spells in Japan and Saudi Arabia as well as Coritiba, São Caetano, Atlético MG and Juventude. Marcão is expected to cost Palmeiras a fee of R$300,000.

Inter turn on the style against Caxias

Internacional romped to an emphatic 5-1 victory against Caxias earlier this evening with the squad looking in perfect shape for Wednesday’s cup tie with União Rondonópolis. Both Taison and Alex netted two each whilst the evening may well be remembered for the debut of young midfielder Giuliano who impressed greatly after coming on as a second half substitute.

As suggested, Bolívar returned to the Colorado defence following injury whilst Magrão, Andrezinho, Guiñazu and Taison made up the Inter midfield behind a forward pairing of Alex and Nilmar. Sandro, expected by many to start was named on a bench which featured Giuliano and Alecsandro.

The visitors got off to surprise start midway through the first half when Marcos Denner (17) beat Bolívar to send a powerful header past Lauro and into the Inter goal against the run of play. Inter responded and pressured the Caxias defence until Magrão (38) controversially leveled heading in Andrezinho’s corner which may not of appeared to cross the line of the Caxias goal much to the frustration of goalkeeper Juninho. To rub further salt into Caxias’ wounds, Inter added their second of the afternoon just minutes later. Kléber played a probing ball down Inter’s left channel which Nilmar knocked into the path of Taison (41) who smashed in a stinging right footed shot twenty yards from goal.

Inter began the second half as they finished the first and Kléber was to again be involved in a decisive Inter attack. The classy left back fed the ball through to the edge of the box which was controlled by Alex (46) who showed typical composure as he arced the ball over the Caxias goalkeeper for Inter’s third.

With Inter in total control, Caxias’ chances of getting anything from the game were further reduced after defender Ciro was dismissed. On the hour, Taison (60) netted his seventh of the Campeonato Gaucho after he linked up well once again with Nilmar who rolled the ball across the goal mouth, leaving the number seven with an easy finish.

With Inter assured of the result, Tite allowed midfielder Giuliano to make his Beira-Rio debut who had been away representing the Seleção Under 20’s since joining last month from Paraná and with twenty minutes remaining, Alecsandro was also introduced to the Inter crowd to make his debut and gain some much needed match fitness.

Inter’s fifth and final goal of the day came from after Alex (77) just beat a Caxias defender to rifle in his second of the game. With the clock running down, Sandro made his first appearance of the new season replacing Guiñazu in midfield.

With Inter fielding a strong side despite having already secured first place in Group A of the Gauchao first stage, the Colorado delivered an assured and clinical performance. Alecsandro finally made his first appearance in a red shirt whilst the pace and movement of young midfielder Giuliano suggests that Inter could yet again have another future star within their ranks.

Marcão denies Portuguesa interest as Palmeiras target left back

Marcão has denied suggestions that he is close to joining Portuguesa but revealed that he is considering an offer to leave Internacional, with the club in question thought to be Palmeiras.

“There is absolutely nothing with me and Portuguesa”, claims Marcão according to finalsports.com.br

“I have another offer, but I prefer to wait in silence because nothing is confirmed. I prefer to say when and if everything is confirmed. If it materializes it’ll be good for both me and the club, I’m certain”, he added, speaking from Curitiba where he is currently on leave from the Inter squad.

It is thought that whilst Marcão would be interested in moving to an Arab based club, the club in question is said to be Palmeiras.

Inter v Caxias

Already confirmed as Group A leaders in the opening stage of the Campeonato Gaúcho, Inter have little to play for as they entertain Caxias at the Beira-Rio this afternoon (16:00 local time).

Despite having little to play for in today’s fixture, Tite is expected to field a strong side as Inter are expected to use the game to prepare for the start of their Copa do Brasil campaign which kicks off next Wednesday in Mato Grosso against União Rondonopolis.

Inter’s main team news is that Bolívar is expected to return to the team following injury whilst highly rated categorias de base product, Sandro is expected to make his first appearance for the Colorado after captaining the Brazilian Under 20 side to the Under 20 Sudamericana title.

With Lauro remaining an ever present in the side so far this year, Kléber is expected to continue at left back as he nears match fitness. Danny Morais and Índio are thought to start in central defence with Bolívar playing at right back.

In midfield, Sandro will be looking to gain experience and establish a partnership playing alongside Magrão. Further up frield, Guiñazu will feature alongside inform Taison. D’Alessandro is not expected to be involved as he recovers from a thigh injury sustained in last Sunday’s clássico.

Alex who has been somewhat victimized in the Brazilian press in recent weeks will be looking to prove his doubters wrong, as he plays alongside Nilmar. Walter who started in Wednesday match with Ypiranga, is expected to start on the bench where he could be joined for the first time by recent arrival, Alecsandro who nears match fitness.

Caxias, traditionally one of the Campeonato Gaúcho’s stronger teams arrive in Porto Alegre in somewhat of a crisis. Struggling in seventh place in Group B (W2 D2 L3), the side are under pressure to deliver results after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Avenida. Caxias coach Argel is expected to make several changes to his side.

Expected Line Up: Lauro; Bolívar, Índio, Danny Morais, Kléber; Sandro, Magrão, Guiñazu, Taison (Giuliano); Alex , Nilmar

Experienced Inter left back Marcão could be set for a move to Portuguesa reports terra Esportes.

Marcão faces increased competition for a place in Tite’s side this season and according to Tadeu Oliveira who represents the player, a deal for the 33 year old with the São Paulo based club is near completion.

Portuguesa are currently 6th in the Campeonato Paulista and will be competing in Série B later this season after relegation from last year’s Brasileirão.

Sandro ready to step up

Inter’s highly rated defensive midfielder Sandro has revealed that is ready to occupy the vacancy in the Inter side left by Edinho’s departure early this year.

After breaking into the first team last year, Sandro is yet to feature in 2009 for the Colorado and has been away captaining the Brazil Under 20 squad to the Sudamericana title in Venezuela.

Sandro has been tipped by many as a ready-made replacement for former captain Edinho who has since moved to Europe with Leece in Italy.

Speaking to Radio Gaucho, Sandro explained that he has no qualms about replacing the former Inter captain.

“It is a huge expectation for me to come into the side with the exit of Edinho. I am prepared though to make this vacancy mine. I was enormously happy to represent the Seleção, even more so being champion and captain”, declaired the 19 year old.

Inter prepare for Caxias

The Colorado continued their on the field preparations for the Sunday’s visit of Caxias during training yesterday near the Beira-Rio.

Sunday’s match is the final round of the Gauchão group stage from which Inter have already qualified so Tite is once again, expected to name an experimental side.

During yesterday’s session, the squad worked through both defensive and attacking build up play and set pieces with Tite giving no hint of his preferred side.

The squad will train again later this morning in a private session where Tite is likely to run through his side for Sunday’s game.

Nathan Raff

I was given the unfortunate news today that Nathan Raff has sadly passed away.

Nathan was a member an English language Brazilian football discussion on community.sigames.com forums.

Nathan would regularly discuss Brazilian football and help me with translating and other questions I had about the Brazilian game.

Rest in Peace Nathan.

Gustavo Nery seeks move away from Inter

Following stories earlier this week surrounding Gustavo Nery’s future, the player himself has confirmed that he wants to leave Internacional.

The former Fluminense left back has fallen out of favour at the Beira-Rio and is currently in São Paulo and is considering an offer from a club in the Middle East.

Speaking to the Porto Alegre newspaper Correio do Povo Gustavo Nery revealed, “I want and need to player. This could be one of the last contracts of my life. I cannot be satisfied with my situation at Inter. Therefore, I asked the club if I can come to São Paulo to sort things”.

Gustavo Nery faces an uphill task to break into the Inter side with the club recruiting two new left backs in January.

D’Alessandro and Alecsandro unlikely to feature against Caxias

Tite is likely to be without both D’Alessandro and Alecsandro for Sunday’s match at the Beira against Caxias.

Andres D’Alessandro missed out Wednesday’s goalless draw with Ypiranga after picking up a thigh injury against Grêmio. The Argentine is still undergoing treatment so will miss Caxias’ visit to the Beira-Rio. D’Alessandro is however expected to make a full recovery ahead of Wednesday’s night trip to Matos Grosso where Inter face União Rondonópolis in the Copa do Brasil.

Despite being officially recognised by the CBF as an Internacional player, Alecsandro is also unlikely to play feature against Caxias. Alecsandro is thought to be lacking match fitness but the striker completed his first full training session yesterday.

“I am well but I know today was only my first full session but already I have trained for 15 days which was very beneficial to me participating today. I am prepared all of the year”, explained Alecsandro.

Gre-Nal of the Century

Keeping to theme of remembering Inter’s achievements in previous years, Inter recorded what is arguably their finest Gre-Nal victory twenty years ago in 1989. Internacional defeated Gremio 2-1 in the 1989 Campeonato Brasiliero semi final.

Gremio took the lead in the historic clássico but despite being reduced to ten men, Nilson scored twice for Inter. The Colorado triumph was a proud moment for Abel Braga with many claiming his tatics to be ‘suicidial’ against Rubens Minelli’s Gremio side.

Thanks to Flávio Bonfiglio for providing me with information and link.

Collection of Inter pictures

Yesterday I was recommended to have a look at a collection of Inter photographs which someone had posted on Orkut.

They feature pictures from almost every team in the club’s history as well as individual players, key moments and other photo’s which capture the club’s 100 year history.

This thread is well worth a look for anyone with an interest in the famous red shirt!

Inter UK Latest News

Inter’s striker Alecsandro has now been officially registered to play for the club after joining the club last month.

The player was officially confirmed with CBF yesterday after appearing in the ‘Boletim Informático Diário’ (BID) document which confirms registered players.

The former Cruzeiro striker joined Inter after a spell in the U.A.E and is now eligible to play in next Sunday’s match with Caxias. However, having not played since early December, Alecsandro short of match fitness and is unlikely to feature despite being available.

Tite currently have a wealth of forwards available to choose from with Alecsandro competing alongside the likes of Nilmar, Alex, Taison and Walter for a place in the Inter team.

Meanwhile speculation continues to surround the future of Gustavo Nery. The left back was signed by Tite last year from Fluminense and after losing his place in the side towards the end of last season, Gustavo Nery has absent throughout Inter’s Campeonato Gaúcho campaign and is thought to be at home in São Paulo.

Speaking yesterday to GloboEsporte, Inter director Newton Drummond confirmed the player’s current situation.

“Gustavo Nery asked for some time to manage personal problems. He has a contract for the rest of the year and he is not being released. If he is made an offer and it’s presented to the club, that is antoher thing but there is nothing”, confirmed Drummond.

Finally, thanks to all who voted in the recent poll which asked whether you liked the new Internacional kits for 2009. An overwhelming 97% majority voted in favour of the newly designed Reebok kits.

Walter rues missed chances

After completing his first game of 2009 for Inter, Walter spoke to the media about Inter’s frustrating goalless draw.

“The team played well and had possibilities but we lacked goals and that is most important. With composure we can do this”, commented the highly rated the striker.

“This year I want I want to start putting the balls into the net for Inter, this did not happen today but I came back into the side well and Tite gave me confidence”, explained Walter.

In the post match press conference, Tite gave his verdict of Walter’s first showing for Inter after winning the U20 Sudamericana title with the Seleção.

“He has shown better movement (since 2008). Today, he needed to be a little more aggressive and clinical. He had the chance to score and inside the area he has to smell the goal”, commented the Inter coach.

Stubborn Ypiranga hold Inter to draw

Ypiranga succeeded where Grêmio failed last night after taking a point from Inter in a goalless draw in Erechim. The point confirms Inter as Group A winners in the first stage of the Campeonato Gaúcho.

As expected, Tite reshuffled the Inter side for the side’s second visit to the Estádio Colosso da Lagoa in a week. Arílton, Danny Morais, Kléber, Maycon, Glaydson, Marcelo Cordeiro, Andrezinho and Walter all started leaving just Lauro, Álvaro and Alex from the side which started Sunday’s victories Gre-Nal.

Inter began positively with Alex linking up well with Walter early on for force Ypiranga ‘keeper Marcelo Pittol, into the first of what would be several saves. Moments after Marcelo Pittol could only helplessly watch the ball clip the post and go wide after a Ypiranga defender cheaply lost possession to Andrezinho. Midway through the first half Ypiranga began to show more composure after surviving the early barrage of Colorado pressure. As the home side became more confident on the ball, Ypiranga threatened for the first time as attacking midfielder Michel saw his effort saved by Lauro. On the half hour mark Inter once again pressured the Ypiranga goal with Alex drilled in a trademark long range free kick which Marcel Pittol found too difficult to hold and pushed it away from goal. Moments later Ypiranga created their best chance of the half. Fullback João Rodrigo burst down the right hand side and delivered a dangerous cross into the area, just missing the head of striker Guto. It was clear to see now that the home side were growing in confidence as shortly after they threatened again as Lauro made an excellent save from full back Marcelo Muller. As the match neared half time, Inter searched for the opening goal once again. Glaydson advanced from the Inter midfield and did well to find Walter who chose not to shot and passed to Marcelo Cordiero who’s effort was once again thwarted by Marcelo Pittol.

Inter began the second half in the same way as they had began the first and immediately began to probe for an early goal. Andrezinho, Walter and Alex all went close in the opening stages of the second half but were once again unable to break the deadlock. After dominating the early stages, Inter were again given another warning from resilient Ypiranga as first Michel shot at Lauro and then Sharlei dribbled past Danny Morais to shoot wide of goal. On sixty minutes, Tite made the first change of the game as he brought off Walter for the Inter’s leading goal scorer, Taison. The introduction of the inform number seven prompted Inter to attack with pace as both Taison and Alex went close. With the match drawing to a close, Inter however, were dealt another warning as this Ypiranga continued to create chances with both Sharlei and João Rodrigo threatening Inter’s goal. With ten minutes remaining Tite opted to use his remaining two substitutions. Arílton was replaced by young Danilo Silva at right back and Giuliano made his Inter debut, replacing midfielder Maycon but neither change could inspire Inter to find the goal.
The draw ensures that Inter remain undefeated in the Gauchão after seven rounds and the point confirms the Colorado as Group A winners with one match remaining against Caxias on Sunday at the Beira-Rio.

The point will be well received by resilient Ypiranga would could well become one of the surprise teams of the 2009 Gauchão as the northern Rio Grande do Sul side top Group B and are now on an impressive run of the three matches without defeat.

Ypiranga v Inter

Inter face their second visit to Erechim’s in four days as the Colorado take on Ypiranga in the 7th round of the Campeonato Gauchão (22:00 kick off).

Despite selecting a mixed squad of young and experienced players, Tite will be hoping that Inter can take another six points at the Estádio Colosso da Lagoa following Sunday’s 2-1 win over Grêmio. Inter need only a point to confirm first place in Group A of the Taça Fernando Carvalho.

From the side which started in Sunday’s clássico, only Lauro, Álvaro and Alex are expected to start tonight whilst youngsters Giuliano and Walter could feature for the first time this season. The pair returned to Brazil earlier this week after successfully winning the U20 Sudamericana in Venezuela. Sandro and Tales who also featured for the Seleção in Venezuela are being rested with Tales carrying a minor injury.

Also unavailable through injury are Bolívar and D’Alessandro. Bolívar’s absence means that Danilo Silva who impressed in the Gre-Nal or Arílton will start at right back. Andrezinho is expected to replace D’Alessandro who missed the came as a precaution after picking up a thigh injury against Grêmio and is likely to be partnered in midfield by Marcelo Cordeiro. Glaydson and Maycon are both likely to play in defensive midfield roles. In form Taison is again expected to start alongside Alex.

Ypiranga welcome Inter to the Estádio Colosso da Lagoa in good form and are top of Group B with 12 points from four matches (W4 L2). Ypiranga have recorded wins over Esportivo and Juventude in their last two games.

Expected Line Up: Lauro; Danilo (Arílton), Danny Morais, Álvaro, Kléber; Maycon, Glaydson, Marcelo Cordeiro, Andrezinho, Alex, Taison

Bolívar and Clemer close to returning / Ji-Paraná set for move to Asia

Club doctor Luciano Ramires has confirmed that Bolívar has completed his course of physiotherapy following injury. Bolívar, who missed out on Sunday’s clássico following the thigh injury, will now begin work with the club’s fitness staff.

Another player returning to fitness is Clemer. The experienced goalkeeper has also begun fitness work as he recovers from an ankle injury. It is thought that Clemer, who recently signed a one year extension to his contract, will resume full training in around a month.

Meanwhile, Ji-Paraná is expected to leave Inter and complete a move to China to an unnamed club. Abel Braga brought the midfielder to Inter from Corinthians but Ji-Paraná has failed to hold down a regular place in the side.

Inter frustrated with Al-Wahda delay

Reports suggest that Inter’s directors are becoming increasingly frustrated with Al-Wahda following the transfer of Alecsandro to the Beira-Rio.

Inter are still awaiting documentation from the U.A.E based club which they require to register Alecsandro with the CBF despite officially signing the former Cruzeiro striker on the 27th January.

Since joining Inter, Alecsandro has undergone fitness and conditioning work with Élio Carravetta and is yet to begin full training.

Gre-Nal reaction

Following Inter’s victory in last night’s clássico, the Porto Alegre media have began to dissect the match. Whilst Inter fans proudly celebrate, Grêmio supporters contemplating what could have been.

Firstly, apologies for my limited match report. I was unable to watch the game fully and I could only watch from a poor live feed which resulted in me listening to the most of the game online to radio Gaucha. Being non-Portuguese speaking, this clearly has it’s difficulties!!

Anyway, immediately after the game Tite shared his views of game during the press conference.

“For the statisticians, I believe that we had more possession of the ball. We are still trying to find the balance in the team. We are still adjusting after the exit of Edinho. I could not pick a team without Taison, Alex, D’Alessandro and Nilmar. I tried to field a forward line of three with one up front but Grêmio imposed themselves well defensively. In the second half I brought on Andrezinho which helped us find our balance”, explained Tite.

Tite also reserved praise for young full back Danilo and Taison who was once again key to Inter’s victory. “I want to praise the whole group but Danilo played very well. Taison is also playing very well. He can make anything happen. We can use the same formation without Nilmar, Taison or Alex”, he revealed.

Bolívar was another who was also impressed with the performance by young Danilo Silva at right back.

“I am very content. There is nothing better than working in the week following victory in the clássico. People at Inter know that he (Danilo) is a great player. Danilo did well at full back pre-season”, commented Bolívar who also revealed that he is unsure whether he will be fit for Wednesday’s match against Ypiranga.

Nilmar meanwhile spoke briefly to the press, expressing the similarities between Taison and his former Corinthians team mate, Carlos Tevez.

“He has the the characteristics and the speed of Tevez. I know that it is still early to say this but we have to support him and allow him to develop”, commented the Colorado number nine.

On a disappointing note, Alex showed no signs of hiding his disappointment after being substituted at half time.

Tite opted to bring on Andrezinho for Alex during the interval, who was visibly unhappy. Alex was also the first to board the team bus following the game. Fernando Carvalho spoke to Zero Hora, “I will talk with him, yes. I understand it, but at that moment the tactical change was necessary”, he explained.

Finally, it is thought that Inter will field mixed teams in their next two Gauchão fixtures. The side having already qualified from the first phase of the Taça Fernando Carvalho and are thought to keeping a close eye on their Copa do Brasil fixture against União Rondonópolis in Mato Grosso on the 18th February.

Inter face Ypiranga on Wednesday and then Caxias on Sunday.

D’Ale and Nilmar hand Inter victory in Erechim Gre-Nal

Internacional won the first clássico of its centenary year last night, goals in either half from D’Alessandro and Nilmar secured the Colorado a 2-1 victory at the Estádio Colosso da Lagoa, Erechim.

Rumours before the match proved to be correct as Tite used Danilo Silva and Marcão as full backs whilst inform Taison also continued in the side. Álvaro, Magrão, Guiñazu, Alex, D’Alessandro and Nilmar all returned to the starting line up after being rested midweek.

Grêmio v Inter

The day has finally come. The entire state of Rio Grande do Sul will come to a standstill later today, as attentions turn towards the city of Erechim, the venue of the 374th Gre-Nal. The first clássico of 2009!

Attention all week has focused on one of the South America’s finest derbies and both team’s rested players during their midweek fixtures.

Inter have got off to a good start in the Gauchão and remain undefeated from their first five games and having not lost to Grêmio since September 2007, the Colorado believe that victory is once again, in sight.

Much of the talk surrounding Internacional’s preparations for the clássico is Tite’s team selection. Tite will find it hard to resist playing inform Taison but playing him alongside Alex and D’Alessandro could affect the balance of their formation. Taison has been in sparkling form so far in this year’s Campeonato Gaucho with five goals to his name.

Bolívar was yesterday confirmed as unavailable after failing to recover from a thigh injury. Danilo Silva and Arílton are in competition for the number two shirt but Danilo Silva revealed to the media yesterday that he is to start the clássico.

Tite’s final decision is whether to play Marcão or Kléber at left back.In normal circumstances, Kléber would be the most likely to feature but recent signing from Santos is short of fitness. Tite has no other injury or suspension concerns and is likely to recall all the first team regulars who were rested in the 4-1 midweek win against Ulbra.

Across town, Grêmio have only won two of their opening four matches and arrive in Erechim on the back of a surprise 3-1 defeat against Veranópolis. Celso Roth is expected to field a cautious 3-6-1 formation in an attempt to grind out a result.

Probable Line Up: Lauro; Danilo Silva, Índio, Álvaro, Marcão; Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro, Taison; Alex, Nilmar

Clássico’s of 2008:
29/06 Brasileirão A 1-1 Índio
13/08 Sudamericana H 1-1 Daniel Carvalho
28/08 Sudamericana A 2-2 Nilmar Índio
29/09 Brasileirão H 4-1 D’Alessandro, Alex, Índio, Nilmar

Taison extends Inter contract / Sorondo set to return

A CBF contractual document has revealed that Taison has extended his contract with Inter for an additional year ensuring that the club will own the player’s registration rights until the end of 2013.

Taison has been instrumental to Inter’s form in the Campeonato Gaúcho so far this year and is currently the leading goal scorer in the entire competition with five goals.

Meanwhile, popular centre back Gonzalo Sorondo is set to return to training next week after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The influential Uruguayan has completed physiotherapy following an ongoing knee injury. Sorondo will now undergo a conditioning programme to regain his fitness.

Countdown to Gre-Nal – 1 day to go

Internacional will train for the final time in Porto Alegre this morning before travelling to Erechim this afternoon.

In typical preparation for the clássico, yesterday’s afternoon training session was held behind closed doors although Tite did confirm in the following press conference that Bolívar will not recover in time from his thigh injury.

Bolívar, who picked up the muscular injury against Sapucaiense a week ago, will not be available for the Gre-Nal leaving Tite to consider two possibilities for the right back slot, Arílton or Danilo Silva.

The other big talking point ahead of the match at the Estádio Colosso da Lagoa is whether Tite will select Taison and Kléber.

Meanwhile, the weather for the 374th Gre-Nal is not looking good, with a high chance of thunderstorms and rain.

This post will be updated throughout the day with the latest news ahead of the clássico.

Speculation from this morning’s training session suggests that Tite will start with both Danilo Silva and Taison in tomorrow’s clássico.

Tite worked with what is expected to be his preferred side during this morning’s private training session and unconfirmed reports suggest that Danilo Silva will get the nod ahead of Arílton to replace injured Bolívar at right back whilst Taison will start in what appears to be an attacking Inter line up.

At left back Tite is set to have worked with Marcão and then Kléber during the session, leaving little clue as to who he will select.

Finally the Inter squad were given a warm welcome by supporters as they arrived in Erechim just hours ago. A number of Colorado’s greeted the side as the team bus arrived at the team’s hotel.

“When we play in the interior we are always received in this way. I want to respond to their affection by being successful in the clássico”, commented Marcão.

Brazil seal tenth U20 Sudamericana title

Brazil’s Under 20 squad sealed their tenth South American Championship title last night, winning the final group stage following their 2-1 victory over Colombia in Puerto La Cruz earlier in the day.

Walter, one of three Inter players starting for the Seleção against the Colombians, gave Brazil a deserved lead with a well taken volley. Douglas Costa added Brazil’s shortly after. Hernan Bertuz pulled a goal back for Colombia with a second half penalty. Sandro and Giuliano also featured in the match, both playing the full 90 minutes.

Later in the evening, Uruguay drew 2-2 with Paraguay which confirmed Brazil as winner’s of the competitions final stage with a maximum 12 points.

Countdown to Gre-Nal – 2 days to go

As the cities of Porto Alegre and Erechim prepare for the first clássico of 2009, Tite must make at least three decisions ahead of Sunday.

Tite revealed to the press this morning that he is yet to decide whether he will field Taison in the Gre-Nal. The attacking midfielder continued his impressive form with two goals last night and Tite could opt for an attacking forward line of Taison, Alex and D’Alessandro. Tite is however thought to be under pressure from both Fernando Carvalho and Giovanni Luigi, would are rumored to prefer Inter field a less attacking line up.

Meanwhile, Bolívar is expecting to find out shortly whether he will be fit to play Sunday as he continues to recover from a muscular problem to his right thigh.

“I still do not know, we are waiting and the treatment this morning was good. I believe that this afternoon’s training session will be decisive because Tite wants to confirm the team. I have still not made done any sprinting but I’ll try this afternoon and we will talk with the doctors because the pain is diminishing”, explained the right back.

Despite Bolívar’s optimism, Luciano Ramires from the club’s medical department, played down chances of a recovery in time for Sunday.

“Bolívar has a muscular injury in his though, for the time being he has only done light work and that will not give make him match fit”, warned Ramires.

Inter’s other fullback, Kléber is also struggling for match fitness despite impressing in his debut for the club last night. Experienced left back Marcão is expected to start if Kléber is ruled out.

Picture: Tite faces a dilemma over whether to play inform Taison in the Gre-Nal

Kléber and Arílton stake claim for Gre-Nal place

Debutant fullbacks Kléber and Arílton are both keen to continue in the side for Sunday’s Gre-Nal after impressing in last night’s victory over Ulbra.

Left back Kléber faces competition for the number six shirt from Marcão and Marcelo Cordeiro and is lacking match fitness.

“The clássico is a different type of game that goes beyond three points, it can take from the sky to hell in seconds. If Tite opts to play me, I am certain that I will respond”, explained Kléber.

Right back Arílton who joined last month from Coritiba faces competition from the experienced Bolívar who is struggling with injury.

“I wait to see if Bolívar improves but if necessarily I am ready to play in the Gre-Nal. I am lacking fitness but I look to improve this in training and know that it can improve each day”, commented the right back.

Reserve Inter see off Ulbra

Internacional warmed ahead of Sunday’s clássico as a mixed side comfortably defeated Ulbra 4-1 last night with Taison instrumental once again to the Colorado’s performance.

As expected Tite made changes throughout the side with only Lauro, Índio and Taison remaining in the side which had beat Sapucaiense in the previous round whilst Arílton, Kléber and Glaydson all made their debuts.

The night didn’t initially go to plan however as the visitors took a surprise lead within the opening minutes to shock the Beira-Rio. Ulbra right back Jonathon saw his long range effort palmed away by Lauro allowing Léo Dias (3) to slot in the rebound.

In response Inter immediately began to pressure Ulbra but the visitors remained strong defensively. Inter would not have to wait too long to find the breakthrough however as young forward Talles Cunha played the ball through for Taison (16) to side foot Inter’s equalizer. Late into first half, Taison (36) extended his goal tally, as Inter’s number seven dribbled past Ulbra’s hapless defender Dudu to coolly finish past goalkeeper André, in what has impressive run of games for the young attacking midfielder.

It wasn’t long into the second half when Inter would once again breakthrough the Ulbra defence. This time Talles Cunha played the ball across to the impressive debutant, Kléber who hit a teasing ball into the Ulbra box for Andrezinho (50) to add Inter’s third of the night, his fourth of the Gauchão campaign. On the hour, Inter then added their fourth. Youngster Talles Cunha (61) found himself unmarked as he received the ball from Marcelo Cordeiro leaving him with an easy finish.

With the result all but sealed, Tite introduced highly rated right back Danilo Silva for Arílton on 70 minutes and then handed talented 18 year old Marquinhos his first senior appearance as he replaced Taison, who left the field to a standing ovation on 76 minutes. With less than ten minutes remaining, Tite made his third and final change as Kléber completed an impressive Inter debut and was replaced by another young debutant, Marinho.

The comprehensive victory leaves Inter undefeated as the Colorado comfortably top group A of the Campeonato Gaucho with 13 points. With Inter having secured a place in the final stages of Taça Fernando Carvalho (the opening stage of the Gauchão), Tite’s squad can now be left to concentrate on Sunday’s all important clássico with Grêmio. The clash between the rivals is the first Gre-Nal of 2009 and is being held outside of Porto Alegre, in the city of Erechim, near the neigbouring state of Santa Catarina.

Inter v Ulbra

Undefeated Inter welcome Canoas based Ulbra to the Beira-Rio this evening in the fifth round of the Campeonato Gaúcho (21:50 local time).

Inter are expected to make several changes to his side, with only Lauro, Índio and Taison expected to continue in the side which comfortably defeated Sapucaiense as Tite keeps one eye firmly on Sunday’s Gre-Nal.

The main focus on tonight’s team though is expected to feature on new left back Kléber who is one of three likely debutants tonight. Seleção full back Kléber is set to play his first match for Inter after completing his move from Santos.

Kléber explained, “In every game I want to play better. This match is important for me as it’s my first one. I want to play well, to help my friends in the best possible way and I will certainly give me all”.

Along with Kléber, fellow new signing from Arílton is expected to start at right back, making his debut after joining from Coritiba whilst Índio and Danny Morais will feature in central defence.

Inter’s third debutant Glaydson (ex-São Caetano) is set to start in a holding midfield role alongside Maycon whilst Andrezinho and Marcelo Cordeiro, who makes his first start after substitute appearances are to play in a more advanced roll, supporting the youthful front line of Taison and Talles Cunha.

Ulbra meanwhile, arrive in Porto Alegre having appointed a new coach. Beto Almeida took over the university based side at the beginning of the week and faces the daunting prospect of taking his side to the Beira-Rio for his first game in charge.

“I have arrived here with little time to work. For this match, I intend to keep the same tactical approach which the team used in it’s previous matches. We know the difficulties of facing Internacional, however the game starts with both teams being equal”, reveal the new Ulbra coach.

Ulbra are currently sixth in Group B in the Gauchão and are so far undefeated having played three games (W1 D2), with their only victory coming in their previous match against Veranópolis in a 3-2 win.

Inter meanwhile currently top Group A and are two points clear with a game in hand of second placed Juventude.

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Arílton, Índio, Danny Morais, Kléber; Maycon, Glaydson, Andrezinho, Marcelo Cordeiro; Taison, Talles Cunha

Rivals to rest players ahead of Gre-Nal

Both teams are expected to rest key players for their fixtures on Thursday night ahead of Sunday’s clássico in Erechim.

Grêmio travel to Veranópolis whilst Inter play Ulbra at the Beira-Rio with both teams bearing the forthcoming clássico in mind.

With Grêmio clearly worried about facing Internacional, the rivals are expected to rest Alex Mineiro, Willian Magrão, Fábio Santos, Souza and Tcheco as coach, Celso Roth looks to continue with his defensive 3-6-1 formation as Grêmio attempt to prepare for Inter.

Meanwhile, Alex will definitely be available for the Gre-Nal after the transfer deadline finally passed without any offer being made for the midfielder. Alex is not expected to feature against Ulbra on Thursday however along with Nilmar and Magrão whilst Bolívar is an injury concern. Kléber could be set to make his Inter debut providing his registration is confirmed.

Giuliano seals Seleção victory over Argentina

Brazil’s U20 Sudamericana campaign continued last night in Maturin, Venezuela as a Seleção side featuring four Internacional players in the starting line up defeated Argentina 2-0.

Recent Inter signing Giuliano scored the game’s winning goal after Alan Kardec gave Brazil the lead from the penalty spot.

The victory ensures that Brazil remain top of the final group.

Inter UK News round up

New arrival Kléber will make his Inter debut this Thursday against Ulbra according to reports. The Seleção left back who joined the Colorado last month, had undergone preseason training with his former club Santos but has been unable to play until now as Inter awaited documentation.

Kléber is expected to replace Marcão at left back and could also feature in Sunday’s Gre-Nal.

Tite could also have young midfielder Paulinho available for selection. The categorias de base product is expected to return to training early this week as he recovers from an ankle injury.

Over the weekend there were also two departures which have so far gone unreported. Chiquinho and Luis Carlos who have been training away from the first team finally expected their expected moves away from the club.

Chiquinho who has been out of favour at the club for a number of years after a promising start to his career has moved on loan to Santa Catarina based club, Joinville.

Chiquinho whose contract expires with Inter at the end of the year is not expected to return to the club and had recently turned down a move to Brasil de Pelotas.

Luis Carlos meanwhile has moved to Goiás where he joins Itumbiara on loan for the year. Despite only moving to the Beira-Rio last August, the striker has found his first team opportunities limited and has fallen further out of favour as Tite added Alecsandro to the squad last month.

Luis Carlos moved to Inter after topping the Série B goal scoring charts with Ceará.

Finally, 2008 captain Edinho made his first appearance with his new club Lecce in the Italian Série A. Edinho came on as a second half substitute in Lecce’s 2-1 victory over Siena and could start for his new club in their next match against Inter Milan.

Píffero calm as Alex speculation intensifies

Inter president Vitório Píffero remained defiant last night and refused to believe that Alex will leave the club as the European transfer window closes today.

“Only an injury of suspension will stop Alex playing in the Gre-Nal (next Sunday). We want to make clear that we have not had any proposals. With the closing of the window tomorrow, it is very difficult to negotiate any proposal. In the final day it is very difficult to do business. It do not see it as a viable option”, explained Piffero to Radio Gaúcho.

Meanwhile, defender Álvaro spoke to journalists following last night’s victory over Sapucaiense and told them that he felt Alex deserves a chance to play outside Brazil.

“Nothing is confirmed but we support him. He’s given a lot to Inter and deserves it. He needs this chance, the player is waiting for it. I feel because we would lose a great person, a leader and a great player but I am happy for him”, he explained. Alvaro himself played in Europe and joined Inter after a spell in Spain playing for Las Palmas, Zaragoza and Levante.

Any news on Alex's future at the Beira-Rio can be found here throughout the day.

UPDATED 15:23 (GMT)

The English Premier League has agreed to extend the transfer deadline which has been accepted by FIFA.

Much of the U.K is covered in snow which is affecting clubs to negotiate transfer deals. This could prove to be bad news for Internacional with reports suggesting that West Ham, Newcastle and Liverpool are interested in Alex.

Inter see off Sapucaiense

The Colorado began their preparations ahead of next Sunday’s Gre-Nal in perfect style last night as goals from Taison, Alex and a brace from Nilmar saw Inter comfortably beat Sapucaiense at the Beira-Rio.

The victory ensures Inter of their place in the semi-final stage of the Taça Fernando Carvalho but the victory could be overshadowed as speculation begins to surround the future of Alex who was substituted during the game, with the European transfer windown closing today.

Inter took to the field in their controversial new formation of 4-2-3-1 formation with Magrão and Guiñazu sitting deep in midfield, with Indio also making his first appearance of the new season in central defence.

Taison (23) continued his impressive form for Inter scoring his third goal of the Gauchão to hand Inter the lead after Alex’s freekick. Five minutes later, Inter felt they should have been awarded a penalty after Nilmar was brought down inside the box only for the referee to wave away Inter’s claims for a spot kick.

Sapucaiense had to wait until the opening stages of the second half for their first attempt at goal as Jean Paulo forced Lauro to make save. Minutes later, Inter were rewarded for their pressure as Alex (53) scored what was possibly his final goal for the Colorado. The entire side and players from the bench celebrated with the attacking midfielder after he coolly placed the ball into the net after receiving the ball from D’Alessandro. Midway through the half Alex received another standing ovation from Beira-Rio crowd as he was substituted for Andrezinho. Now comfortably in control of the game, Inter picked off Sapucaiense and added their third as Nilmar (74) received Magrão’s pass before slotting the ball into the back of the net with his left foot. With seventy-seven minutes on the clock, Tite made another change bringing on Inter’s recent signing from Coritiba, Arílton for right back Bolívar in a like-for-like replacement. With the match drawing to a close, Inter put the game beyond any doubt as Taison broke down the left to set Nilmar (85) up for his second of the match.

Inter’s impressive second half performance will be seen as timely boost as the club face Ulbra on Thursday evening before next Sunday’s clássico with Grêmio. With the European transfer window shutting today however, it remains unclear whether Alex will be making the trip to Erechim next Sunday.

Under 14’s secure eleventh Efipan title

Inter’s success at youth level continued last night as the club’s under 14 squad made history winning the ‘Encontro de Futebol Infantil Pan-Americano’ (Efipan) for an impressive eleventh time.

Inter defeated River Plate of Argentina by 2-0 to secure the title last night in Alegrete.

The side who are coached by Deive Bandeira had already defeated rivals Grêmio in the semi final on route to the final.

Walter double earns Seleção over Uruguay

Inter's highly rated striker Walter scored twice last night in the Brazilian Under 20’s 3-2 win over Uruguay, who slumped to their first defeat in four games at the U20 Sudamericana.

From Goal.com:

Brazil Take Sweet Revenge On Uruguay

Brazil defeated Uruguay 3-2 in an action packed U-20 South American Championship match in Puerto Ordaz on Saturday. The Brazilians took revenge on the Uruguayans after suffering a similar defeat earlier in the week...

With two goals from Walter, the top goal scorer in the U-20 South American Championship, and with Brazil's best display in the tournament, Uruguay's four-match undefeated streak came to an abrupt end.

Uruguay had beaten Brazil by an identical 3-2 scoreline just three days ago. But they couldn't find the same form in the latest encounter between the teams.

Brazil proved that they are the firm candidates to win the title, after a hard-worked victory over an extremely difficult Uruguay side.

The Brazilians went ahead in the 20th minute through Walter, who got the better of both Marcelo Silva and Robert Herrera, before finding the back of the net.

The goal seemed to spark Brazil to life, and Walter doubled their lead in the 30th minute, after fine work from teammate Giuliano.

Brazil dominated their opponents, but in the 40th minute a lapse of concentration by goalkeeper Renan, allowed Uruguay to come back into the match with a goal from Silva.

After the break Uruguay searched desperately for an equalizer. In the 57th minute Tabare Viudez came close to scoring, as did Maximiliano Calzado seven minutes later.

But Brazil had other ideas, and Gremio midfielder Douglas Costa, who came on in the second half, restored their lead when he unleashed an extraordinary 25 metre drive in the 78th minute.

The Uruguayans seemed down and out, but they never stopped fighting, and Abel Hernandez pulled a goal back for them in the 94th minute with a fine header.

In the second round, Brazil will face arch-rivals Argentina, while Uruguay clash with Colombia. Both matches will be played in Maturin.

The later game saw hosts Venezuela come from behind to edge Colombia 2-1. Elkin Blanco (13') put Colombia ahead, but goals from Jonathan Del Valle (35') and Carlos Fernandez (60') won the match for Venezuela.

Inter V Sapucaiense

Internacional head into this evenings match with Sapucaiense boosted by the return of Alex, D’Alessandro, Índio and Guiñazu as Tite is able to field a full strength side for the fourth round of the 2009 Gauchão.

A win for the Colorado tonight at the Beira-Rio (19:10 local time) will secure Inter a top four finish in Group One and advance the playoff rounds of the Campeonato Gaúcho’s stage, the Taça Fernando Carvalho.

A victory tonight and solid performance would also put the squad at ease with the Colorado set to play Grêmio in the clássico next Sunday in the city of Erechim.
With Alex and D’Alessandro completing their suspensions against São Luiz midweek, Guiñazu is also expected to return to the side following an ankle injury which has ruled him out of the last two matches. Índio is expected to make his first appearance of the season as he also returns from injury.

Despite the return of four players, Taison, who has arguably been Inter’s best player so far this year, is expected to retain his place in the side. The explosive youngster is expected to play in an advanced midfield role alongside Argentine, D’Alessandro.
Maycon, Rosinei and Andrezinho, who netted Inter’s winner against São Luiz are all expected to miss out. In defence Danny Morais is expected to lose his place in the side to Índio who’ll partner Álvaro in central defence.

Alex and Nilmar will continue up front with neither of Inter’s two big signings Kléber and Alecsandro available for selection.

Sapucaiense who were one of the surprise teams in the 2008 Gauchão, have so far won and lost in their opening two games with their only victory coming in Thursday’s 2-1 win against Inter SM.

Probable Line Up: Lauro, Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Marcão, Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro, Taison, Alex, Nilmar
