Inter reject fresh Nilmar speculation

Inter president Vitório Píffero has denied that the club are in negotiations to sell Nilmar after reports emerged linking the striker with a return to Europe with Palermo.

“We have not received contact from any club for any player. The window is in August. It is purely speculation and it does not correspond with the reality”, confirmed Píffero.

The Italian club are long term admirers of the 24 year old who has been linked with a return to Europe in the August transfer window and Nilmar’s agent Orlando da Hora has claimed that the Palermo are looking to make an offer of around €15 million (R$43 million).

Náutico v Inter

The Colorado Copa do Brasil campaign continues tonight (21:50 POA time), as Inter face Recife based Náutico in the first leg of the competitions third round. The match could prove to be Inter’s most difficult of the season with Náutico’s Estádio dos Aflitos a notoriously difficult venue.

Tite has mixed news for the game with Nilmar confirmed fit and expected to start up front after missing Inter’s 5-0 goleada against Guarani last week. There are doubts over holding midfielder Sandro however who has struggled with injury after training yesterday. Sandro faces a race against time to be declared fit for tonight and is said to be undergoing intensive physiotherapy. Tite has already confirmed that Glaydson will come into the team if Sandro fails to recover.

Prior to arriving in the state of Pernambuco, eyebrows were raised when Walter was left out of Internacional’s twenty man squad. Walter reacted badly to not being named in the side to play against Guarani last week and was played for the club’s juniores on Saturday.

A major concern amongst the Inter delegation is the state of the pitch at the Estádio dos Aflitos. The grass is thought to be in poor condition whilst the pitch has many holes in it. Around 20,000 are expected to attend the match.

With the winners facing either Flamengo or Fortaleza in the quarter finals the tie should prove to be a close affair. Both of the last two games between Náutico and Inter finished 1-1 with Nilmar equalising for Inter in their 2008 Brasileirão fixture.

Náutico who recently finished second behind rivals Sport in the Campeonato Pernambuco will be without Derley who is unavailable as he is on loan from Inter.

Walter misses out on trip home

Walter will definitely miss out tomorrow night, when Inter face Náutico in the Copa do Brasil third round after the 19 year old was not included in Tite’s squad to travel to the striker’s home town of Recife.

Walter, who apologised earlier this week after falling out with Tite after not being involved in Inter’s match with Guarani, showed no signs of reacting to this latest set back.

“I must be patient, I must wait for my chance. The city (Recife) is pretty but we have two games there in the Brasileirão, against Sport and Náutico. I want to be there in both”, explained Walter.

Injury stricken Leandrão was named in Tite’s squad along with Nilmar, Taison and Alecsandro for the game against Náutico as Walter was instead playing for youth team, where he scored twice in a convincing 9-0 goleada against Gepol in Osório.

The decision to play Walter in the juniores and to exclude him from the first team squad for the Náutico game appears to the club’s response to the player storming out of the team hotel before last week’s game against Guarani.

Inter are keen to stress however that Walter has a future at the club and are not prepared to allow the striker to leave.

Inter receive warm welcome in Pernambuco

Inter have arrived in the state of Pernambuco ahead of tomorrow’s match against Náutico.

Arriving at Recife airport the squad were greeted by around 50 supporters who sung the club’s hym. The Inter squad also received support from supporters of Santa Cruz and Sport, Náutico traditional rivals.

The twenty man Inter squad left Porto Alegre yesterday lunch time before travelling to São Paulo and then onto Recife where the temperature was 25º C.

Having drawn their last two matches at Náutico’s Estádio dos Aflitos 1-1, Inter will be looking for another positive result before taking their Copa do Brasil tie back to the Beira-Rio.

The Inter squad:
Marcelo Cordeiro (D), Michel Alves (GK), Taison (F), D’Alessandro (M), Rosinei (M), Glaydson (M), Nilmar (F), Índio (D), Kléber (D), Andrezinho (M), Álvaro (D), Sandro (M), Lauro (GK), Alecsandro (F), Guiñazu (M), Danny Morais (D), Giuliano (M), Leandrão (F), Bolívar (D), Magrão (M)

Danilo Silva and Nilmar passed fit

Defender Danilo Silva has been declared fit by the club’s medical department after twisting is knee in a training game last Thursday.

Danilo, 22, has played a key part in Inter’s season so far competing with Bolívar at both right back and central defence.

The Departamento Médico are also satisfied that Nilmar has fully recovered from his ankle injury which ruled him out of Inter’s last game against Guarani.

Both Danilo Silva and Nilmar are expected to travel to Recife with the Inter later today. Nilmar is
expected to return straight into the team for Wednesday night’s game alongside Taison.

Inter seek new sponsorship agreement

Three multinational companies are rumored to competing to become Internacional’s new main sponsors, after it was revealed that Inter’s agreement with current sponsor Banrisul will not be renewed.

According to Radio Gaúcho, telecommunications company Oi, and electronic giants Samsung and LG are all interested in becoming the club’s new sponsors from June.

With Inter hoping the Estádio Beira-Rio will be named as a host venue for the 2014 World Cup, Inter are keen to delay any decision regarding sponsorship until FIFA have confirmed the World Cup venues in order to maximize any potential income.

Inter ready for Náutico challenge

Confirmation of Inter’s 3rd Round tie in the Copa do Brasil was received from the CBF headquarters yesterday afternoon with the match being scheduled for next Wednesday 29th April.

Internacional will play the first leg away at Nautico’s notoriously unwelcoming Estádio dos Aflitos.

The Inter squad will make the 3,500 km journey to Recife, Pernambuco on Monday afternoon but despite the distance Tite remained confident during yesterday’s press conference.

“The trip is bad of us but for Náutico also. My aim is that the team repeats the level of performance that we showed against Juventude”, he revealed.

“Náutico is a competitive team that got to the final of their state championship. They have players with good individual technique such as Carlinhos Bala and Gilmar. We will have to go there and play with intelligence”, added Tite.

Náutico booked their place in the third round of the Copa do Brasil after defeating Cricuma 3-2 in Recife, Pernambuco last night.

The Timbu will now face Internacional with the date and time to be confirmed by the CBF.

Former Inter player Derley opened the scoring for Náutico before Gilmar’s penalty. At 2-2, Juliano scored a late winner despite being reduced to ten men to eliminate Cricuma.

Inter reject Atlético Madrid reports

Internacional have rejected claims that Atlético Madrid are interested in signing D’Alessandro.

Atlético who are currently seventh in Spain’s La Liga are rumoured to have idenfityed the Argentine as a target in Augusts transfer window.

Inter’s vice president Fernando Carvalho denied any speculation.

“We do not have any knowledge of this interest from Atletico Madrid. So far the only interest we have had was at the end of last year from a North American club (Los Angles Galaxy)”, he confirmed.

A move to Spain for D’Alessandro appears unlikely. Inter have a release clause of €40 million in the player’s contract whilst D’Alessandro had an unsuccessful time at his previous Spanish club, Real Zaragoza.

Walter backs down following outburst

Walter spoke to the press following training yesterday, revealing that he had apologised to the club for leaving the squad ahead of the Guarani match, after finding out that he would not be playing.

“I didn’t feel focused at that moment. I know that I made a wrong decision. I went to Tite and the president and asked to be excused. I want to play but I know that it’s difficult and in the hour of need they can count on me”, explained the 19 year old.

“My head is here with Internacional and we have the Copa do Brasil and Brasileiro to think of”, he added.

Walter future in doubt following Guarani absence

Walter’s future at Internacional has been cast into doubt after the highly rated young striker walked out on the Inter squad after being told that he would not be starting last night’s match against Guarani.

This latest news could spark a scramble amongst some of Europe’s biggest clubs to sign the 19 year old with Manchester United, Juventus, A.C Milan and Manchester City all rumoured to be interested.

Speaking to Finalsports Walter explained that he was annoyed with his situation at Inter and would be reconsidering his future.

“After finding out I was not playing, I was not in the right frame of mind and I said this to Tite. I respect Alecsandro, Taison and Nilmar but I wanted to play and take advantage of this chance”, explained Walter.

“I do not know if I am welcome. Now I have to see my agent”, added the striker.

Despite catching the attention of scouts from Europe after impressing for Brazil’s U20 squad in the South American championships, Walter has found his first team opportunities limited at the Beira-Rio and is seemingly fourth in line at Internacional behind fellow strikers Nilmar, Taison and Alecsandro.

With first choice striker Nilmar unavailable through injury, Walter was in competition with fellow striker Alecsandro for a start in the Inter team.
Tite meanwhile refused to confirm that Walter had left the squad and that the decision to leave Walter out of the match day squad was purely tactical.

“It was a tactical option. I wanted a fast player (Talles Cunha) and not a target man (Walter)”, he explained.

“Andrezinho also didn’t start today and has been playing well. People have to put the team’s objectives before individuals. Inter is above me, Walter and anyone else. Danny Morais was also not named on the bench as was Giuliano who is also involved with the Seleção (Brazil U20’s)”, affirmed the Inter coach.

Fernando Carvalho, vice president of Internacional spoke to Final Sports reporter Carmelito Bifano and explained that this issue will be dealt with internally and that selling the player was not a possibility.

“This has not crossed our minds for such a small problem. Walter is a person who has a certain difficulty in expressing himself but he is a great player, a boy and we cannot create a monster. Now we will go and deal with this internally.”

Another day, another goleada!

Inter showed no signs of a Campeonato Gaúcho hangover last night as Alecsandro and D’Alessandro inspired the ‘Rolo Compressor’ to a 5-0 Copa do Brasil victory.

Inter now advance to the third round of the competition where they face either Náutico or Criciúma who play tomorrow in Pernambuco.

After Sunday’s 8-1 goleada against Caxias, Inter picked up from where they left off as Alecsandro flicked on Kléber’s pass in front of Índio (7) who’s stretched forward to open the scoring. With Guarani under intense pressure from Inter, D’Alessandro tormented Guranani right back Maranhão before picking out Alecsandro (16) who headed in Inter’s second. Shortly after D’Alessandro saw his strike go narrowly wide, Taison (32) smashed in Inter’s third from outside of the box leaving Guranai’s goalkeeper Douglas stunned.

With Inter having a comfortable three goal lead at half time Marcelo Cordeiro was brought on at left back for Kléber and made an immediate impact as his cross found Alecsandro (51) who headed in his second of the evening. With Guarani coach Vadão fearing the worst, attacking midfielder Danilo Rio’s was substituted for central defender Rafael Feto. Vadão made another defensive change midway through the half as Alecsandro, Rosinei and Taison combined well which resulted in the ball whistling just over the bar. Despite the changes, Inter found themselves able to penetrate the Guarani defence yet again as Bolívar (74) headed in his first goal of the season after good work from D’Alessandro for Inter’s fifth goal. Having built up a strong lead Inter saw out the remainder of the game and faced little threat from a Guarani side were unable to make any use of the ball. Danny Morais was introduced late on for Álvaro in central defence with the result all but confirmed

Inter v Guarani

Having confirmed themselves as winners of the 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho, Inter must forget about their emphatic 8-1 victory against Caxias as they welcome Guarani to the Beira-Rio in a must win game (21:50 local time).

In the first leg two weeks ago, two goals from Taison appeared enough to send Inter through to the third round of the Copa do Brasil but Romário’s late goal for the home side secured Guarani a second leg, with the score finishing 2-1at the Estádio Brinco de Ouro da Princesa.

Any suggestions of a party atmosphere within the Inter squad following Sunday’s Gaúcho triumph were dispelled by Tite who yesterday spoke to the press.

“The party stopped at that moment. Everybody is completely focused on this deciding game against Guarani. We know that the Copa do Brasil is a competition that does not allow errors. The result against União Rondonópolis served them a lesson”, explained Tite.

Inter’s coach will also be boosted by having a near fully fit squad to chose from. Tite’s only concern is the fitness of Nilmar who missed training yesterday with an ankle concern. It is thought that Nilmar will be given as long as possible to prove his fitness before Tite confirms his team, powerful centre forward Alecsandro will be expected to start if Nilmar is ruled out.

Guarani who were recently relegated to the São Paulo Second Division have a number of injury worries. Recently appointed coach Vadão has up ten players unavailable to him, including top scorer Fernando Gaúcho. Romário who scored Guarani’s goal in the first leg faces competition from midfielder Chiquinho for a starting place.

Adriano Gabiru, the scorer of Internacional’s famous goal against Barcelona in the 2006 FIFA World Club Cup is also unavailable to Guarani after joining the Campinas based club last week.

Inter to enter negotiations with Monaco

The agent of Bolívar, Neco Cirne is expected to travel to France within the next week to discuss the future of the on loan Inter defender.

Bolívar‘s loan at Internacional finishes at the end of June and both the club and player are keen to extend the agreement although any deal must first be agreed with Monaco.

Monaco are only thought to be interested in selling Bolívar and value the player at €3 million.

Reports suggest that Inter would not be prepared to meet Monaco’s valuation for the player however Bolívar has also spoken about interest from Ukraine which could hinder any chance Inter have of extending their current agreement with Monaco.

Bolívar has made 34 appearances for Monaco since joining the French club from Inter in 2006.

Nilmar a doubt ahead of Guarani game

Nilmar could be set to miss Inter’s second leg tie with Guarani tomorrow night after he missed this afternoon’s training session.

The striker is thought to have undergone physic work on his ankle after recently from a similar injury last week.

Is it thought that tests on his ankle will determine whether or not he will be available to Tite for tomorrow’s night game. In the event of Nilmar being unavailable, Alecsandro is likely to partner Taison up front.

Inter prepare for transfer window

Giovanni Luigi has revealed to Radio Gaúcha that Inter are already preparing for the August transfer window as the club are expected to be forced to sell at least one player.

Vice president Fernando Carvalho has already confirmed Taison will not be sold with Nilmar or the highly rated Walter being widely tipped to leave the Beira-Rio.

“The next window is in August and we are already thinking about this situation. We have in this past year lost players and changed coach but we dealt with worrying situations such as not being successful away from home”, explained Luigi.

As part of their preparations, Inter are expected to step up their attempts to extend the loan deals of midfielder Rosinei and right back Bolívar.

Inter are thought to be keen to keep Rosinei despite the midfielder finding his first team opportunities limited. Rosinei signed a one year loan with Inter last July from Real Murcia. However the Spanish club are said to prefer to sell the player permanently for around €1.5 million rather than extend Rosinei’s loan for another twelve months.

Inter are also expected to face a struggle to keep hold of Bolívar. With his loan at Inter due to expire shortly, the Colorado are reportedly keen to extend the deal at least until the end of 2009.

Any deal could be difficult for Inter to negotiate with Ukrainian based Shakhtar Donetsk reportedly ready to meet Monaco’s €3 million evaluation for the versatile defender.

Inter smash Caxias in 8-1 goleada to win 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho

Internacional completed their Campeonato Gaúcho campaign in remarkable style yesterday afternoon defeating Caxias 8-1 in the Taça Fábio Koff final. The victory confirms the Colorado their first title of it’s centenary year as Inter are crowned Gaúcho champions for a record 39th time.

Inter, strong favourites before the final lived up to all expectations as they remained ‘invicto’ having not lost a single game with Tite becoming the first coach to win the Campeonato Gaúcho with three different clubs (previously with Caxias, Grêmio).

Taison who scored Inter’s second goal in the goleada completed the championship as the top scorer ‘artilheiro da competição’ with 15 goals to his name.

The floodgates opened in the wet Estádio Beira-Rio early on as Magrão (6) rose above the Caxias defence to connect with D’Alessandro’s cross, heading the Colorado into an early lead. Inter then doubled their advantage when Kléber’s probing pass into the box carved open the Caxias defence for Taison (15) to finish his 15th goal of the championship. Inter’s dominance was evident as they scored again three minutes later in similar fashion. This time down the right as Nilmar (18),burst into the box to neatly finish Bolivar’s pass. Nilmar (22) was able to double his tally shortly after as he took full advantage of Caxias’ inability to clear the ball much to their coach, Argel’s frustration. Inter however showed no mercy as neat movement and passing resulted into captain and crowd favourite Guiñazu (32) to find himself through to seal Inter’s fifth. The embarrassment was to continue for Caxias’ goalkeeper Rafael was caught out by Magrão’s (39) clever finish from the edge of the box to further extend Inter’s huge lead. Inter still refused to show any signs of letting up as they extended their lead to 7-0 at half time. Following a neat one-two with Nilmar, Taison dribbled his way into the heart of the Caxias area before unselfishly laying the ball off to D’Alessandro (43) leaving the Argentine with a simple finish.

In the second half Inter managed the game with ease although without the same intensity as their blistering first half performance. Lauro was called into action for the first time to save from Caxias midfielder Roberto. With Inter’s forthcoming fixture with Guarani in mind, Tite introduced Alecsandro and Andrezinho for Nilmar and D’Alessandro on 56 minutes. It was to be another substitute who’d make an impact though as Caxias’ Cristian Borja (65) did well, finishing off a well worked goal for the visitors. Shortly afterwards Tite made his final substitution as Marcelo Cordeiro came on for the magnificent Magrão. Internacional comfortably saw out the remainder of the game although there was still time for centre back Álvaro (87) to get on the end of Kléber’s cross into the box, to seal a famous Inter victory which would hand them both the Taça Fábio Koff and Gaúcho title.

Ironically the 8-1 victory was the same scoreline as Inter’s deciding Gaúcho match last year against another Caxias based club, Junventude!

Post match reaction
Tite, clearly delighted with his side’s performance, told the press of his pride to become the first coach to win the Gauchão with three different teams.

“I must say that I am very proud and clearly will be going home very happy but I’m happier about our form. The squad that won is very special”, he declared.

Inter were also praised by Santos coach Vagner Mancini and Palmeiras’ Wanderlei Luxemburgo who both told media that they regarded Inter as the strongest side in Brazil.

“We need to prove and develop day by day and in the competitions. This question about us being the best will only be answered when we play other teams. I see that we are strong defensively, which is something I ask for and the team are aggressive, effective and playing nice football. Now everything is set and what happened today in the first half should be placed in a picture. This is in our best three or four performances”, responded Tite.

Meanwhile, Giovanni Luigi revealed that the players will not be celebrating their Gaúcho title just yet with the players expected to return to training this afternoon in preparation for Wednesday’s Copa do Brasil second leg tie with Guarani.

“The agreement with the players is that they will not have a party but on Thursday they will have a super to commemorate the centenary. Even though we’ve conquered the Gauchão we’re only focusing on the Copa do Brasil, which we also want to conquer”, explained Luigi.

Inter could also once again delve into the transfer market according to vice president Fernando Carvalho.

Current right back Bolívar is on loan to Inter from Monaco and is expected to move to Ukraine shortly once his contract expires.

“Bolívar is on loan and it is possible he can continue at the Beira-Rio but it will be far from easy. We aren’t rejecting the likes of Leonardo Moura (Flamengo right back) but we’re looking for someone who is defensive. There are some alternatives in the market but our main options are within our squad. There is Danilo Silva and we still have Arílton who is being prepared for the first team”, revealed the Inter vice president.

Inter v Caxias

Internacional meet Caxias (16:00 local time) this afternoon at the Beira-Rio as the Colorado look to pick up their first title of its centenary year as victory would confirm Inter as the 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho winners.

Inter’s have been in outstanding form during this year’s Gauchão as the Colorado remain undefeated so far from 20 matches. Tite’s team will become the first Inter side since Ruben’s Minelli team in 1974 to Inter win the Gauchão undefeated.

Tite will be fully aware however of Caxias though having led them to the Gaúcho title in 2000 where they beat strong favorites Grêmio over two legs.

“Inter has a campaign that makes us favorites but this does not determine the result. The performance is the only thing which will decided this. With Caxias, I have already lived this situation”, warned Tite in Friday’s press conference.

On the field, Inter have no injury or suspension worries. Both Nilmar and Índio successfully returned to training after recovering from minor ankle injuries. In addition, Guiñazu and Taison are available once again after sitting out Inter’s 4-0 win over Ulbra in the semi final.

With Inter at full strength Caxias coach Argel is forced to make changes. Goalkeeper Muriel and right back Daniel are on loan from Inter and are illegible whilst Bruno and Mika are both suspended. Injury doubt Zacarias is expected to play in central defender with Argel unlikely to name his side until late on.

Finally, to clear any confusion of the Campeonato Gaúcho here are the regulations:

Whoever wins today will win the second phase of the Gauchão, the Taça Fábio Koff.

As Inter won the first phase (Taça Fernando Carvalho) they will automatically be crowned overall winners of the Campeonato Gaúcho if they win the Taça Fábio Koff.

If Caxias win the Taça Fábio Koff then the Campeonato Gaúcho will go to a grand final which would be played next weekend.

Line Up’s:
Inter: Lauro, Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Kléber; Sandro, Magrão, Guiñazu, D’Alessandro, Taison, Nilmar
Caxias: Rafael, Edenílson, Santin, Vagner Lima, Brida, Zacarias, Roberto, Marielson, Guilherme, Júlio Madureira, Marcos Denner

Atlético-MG youngster linked with Inter move

Reports from Minas Gerais suggest that Internacional are set to sign Atlético’s 16 year old youth player Fred.

The player is yet to sign a professional contract with Atlético but reports suggest that friends of the player claim he is set to move to Porto Alegre and begin training with Inter.

Inter youngsters impress for Brazil U17’s

Inter youngster Felipinho got himself on the scoresheet as Brazil’s U17’s began their South American championship campaign on Friday, with a 4-0 goleada against Paraguay in Chile.

Carlão (São Paulo), Zezinho (Juventude) and Coutinho (Vasco) all scored with the Seleção facing Peru on Monday evening.

Inter also have goalkeeper Alisson and midfielder Leonardo in the squad.

Tite and Índio ready for Caxias challenge

At yesterday’s press conference, Tite was fully aware of the challenge that faces his side on Sunday as the coach looks to lead Inter to their record breaking 39th Campeonato Gaúcho title.

“Internacional have had a campaign that has made us favorites but Caxias comes with form. We have the responsibility to win the game because we’re a great team, with all respect to Caxias. What determines the result in the end is the performance,” Tite explained to the press.

Inter’s central defender Índio also spoke to the media after successfully completing training yesterday afternoon. The training session was Índio’s first since suffering from a minor ankle injury.

Now Índio, who needs just two goals to equal the club record for a defender, is keenly anticipating the challenge with Caxias forwards Marcos Denner and Julio Madueira.

“Calmness is everything and everything is ready for a great game. We have to pay attention and take care not only of them (Marcos Denner and Julio Madueira) but the whole Caxias team. We must give them our attention and not give any spaces, especially near the area”, explained Índio.

Lauro attracts Italian interest

Goalkeeper Lauro has revealed that he has been contacted from foreign clubs and scouts could be watching him in Sunday’s final at the Beira-Rio.

“Representatives have asked about my fee and my peperspective of wages but I cannot confirm whether they will be in Porto Alegre (on Sunday). I am happy to continue my work here”, commented Lauro.

Lauro also revealed in the interview to Bandeirantes Radio that he would be keen to move to Italy. “If negotiations happened I would have accomplished a dream because it is country for which I have great affection for and it is where my grandmother lived”

Fernando Carvalho confirmed back in January that an Italian club enquired about the goalkeeper who is contracted to Inter until August 2012.

Inter rule out move for Léo Moura

Internacional have denied speculation linking them with Flamengo right back Léo Moura.

News broke of Inter’s reported interest in Léo Moura after the newspaper Correio do Povo claimed Inter were looking to bring the 30 year old to the Beira-Rio to replace Bolívar.

However, Inter vice president Fernando Carvalho discarded the story explaining that Inter use a solid line of four defenders with only Kléber playing in an advanced role and that the attacking Léo Moura would not fit into Tite’s team.

Nilmar returns to training

Inter were dealt good news yesterday as Nilmar returned to the afternoon’s training session.

Nilmar returned for the session which was open for the public and showed no signs of discomfort. The striker’s availability had been in doubt after an ankle injury had threatened his chances of playing in Sunday’s Taça Fábio Koff final.

With the return of Nilmar, Tite could now be without another first team regular. Índio has picked up a minor injury although the club are hopeful he will return to training today and be fit for Sunday.

Inter linked with Flamengo fullback

Porto Alegre newspaper Correio do Povo is reporting this morning that Inter are looking to agree a deal with Flamengo’s Léo Moura.

The 30 year old right back is expected to leave Flamengo and despite Inter directors denying speculation, Correio do Povo reports that a deal between the two clubs could be agreed after the Gaúcho and Carioca state championships finish.

Léo Moura who has been capped once for the Seleção is likely to have been targeted by Internacional as they prepare for the departure of current right back Bolívar who is expected to join Shakhtar Donetsk after his loan with Inter finishes.

Léo Moura who has not been paid by cash strapped Flamengo for two months, has played for all of the big four Rio clubs after starting with Botafogo. He has also played for Palmeiras and São Paulo as well as spells in Belgium, Holland and Portugal.

Índio and Nilmar confident ahead of Caxias final

Both Índio and Nilmar have spoken to the Bandeirantes radio this morning and are positive about Sunday’s Taça Fábio Koff final against Caxias.

Victory for Inter would see them crowned 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho champions.

“We’re aware of our quality but this does not mean we’re favourites”, revealed Índio. “We are focused and we want to be at our best to win the title. When playing at a great club, we are obliged to be successful and this Sunday will be no different”, said the central defender.

Meanwhile Nilmar was confident about his chances of playing against Caxias as after doubts had been raised about the striker’s fitness after he suffered an ankle injury.
Nilmar however is confident of returning to training ahead of Sunday’s final dispelling any doubts about his availability.

“I hope to train well today and to be at 100% for Sunday. From now, I have until Saturday to make training but I think that I will already by exercising as normal by tomorrow”, affirmed Nilmar.

Sorondo to be saved for Brasileirão

After coming through his first game since October in a friendly match on Monday, it is thought that Gonzalo Sorondo will not participate in what could be Inter’s final Gauchão fixture on Sunday.

Inter are instead thought to be looking to introduce Sorondo back into the side for the Campeonato Brasileiro.

The central defender who has been recovering from knee surgery has been declared fit by the club’s medical department. However, he is not expected to be rushed back by the coaching staff and is rumored to return for Inter’s opening Brasileirão match against Corinthians on 10th May, where he would be expected to mark Ronaldo.

Inter prepare for final

Internacional’s preparations for Sunday’s Taça Fábio Koff final against Caxias began yesterday as Vitório Píffero confirmed that on loan duo Muriel and Daniel would not be available for Caxias to play against Inter.

Goalkeeper Muriel and right full back Daniel joined Caxias on loan from Inter at the beginning of the year and despite the efforts of Caxias president Osvaldo Voges, the pair are unable to play following a contractual clause.

Meanwhile, Nilmar underwent a check up yesterday afternoon after picking up a knock on his ankle. Reports suggest that the club’s medical department are confident the striker will be available for the final.

Nilmar is currently Inter’s second highest scorer this year with 11 goals.

Finally, Tite has warned his side of complacency ahead of Sunday. The Inter coach will secure his second Gaúcho state title if the Colorado are successful next weekend, nine years after winning his first state championship with Inter’s opponents - Caxias.

Caxias became one of a handful of teams to break the dominance of Inter and Grêmio in 2000 as Tite led them to victory against Grêmio with a 3-0 first leg victory at home followed by a 0-0 draw at the Grêmio’s Estádio Olímpico.

Tite warned, “Respect Caxias. Their recently results show that they are extremely competitive”.

Sorondo completes 90 minutes in friendly

Gonzalo Sorondo continued his return to fitness yesterday after playing in a friendly training game against a Rio Grande do Sul professional player’s union side.

The central defender completed the full ninety minutes and picked up a yellow card
in the match which Inter won 8-1 at Inter’s training pitches outside the Beira-Rio.

Sorondo who has not played since August revealed, “I’m well and without pain. I feel comfortable with the ball.”

The Uruguayan remained cautious however when asked to comment on his return to the first team.

“I have to be conscious that I am not yet used to the rhythm of the game”, he explained.

Goals from Walter (2), Talles Cunha (2), Giuliano, Leandrão, Danny Morais and Marinho all gave Inter a comfortable win.

Inter v Ulbra

Internacional can secure their place in the Taça Fábio Koff final tonight if they can overcome Ulbra at the Beira-Rio (19:00 local time).

Juventude or Caxias will await Inter, who have now lost a single game in this year’s Campeonato Gaúcho, in the final. However, Tite will be forced to make changes to a side which has won consecutive games against Grêmio and Guarani.

On a positive front, D’Alessandro is expected to make his first start after his return from injury whilst Magrão is also thought to start after shaking off an injury which ruled him out of Inter’s midweek win over Guarani. Álvaro is also likely to start in defence despite missing training earlier in the week.

Inter’s absentees for this evenings semi final include central midfielder Guiñazu and top scorer Taison who both miss out through suspension. Gonzalo Sorondo remains absent with Inter keen to reintroduce the Uruguayan slowly after a knee operation.

Despite the re-emergence of D’Alessandro, Andrezinho is expected to continue in the side replacing Guiñazu, whilst Alecsandro will start up front alongside Nilmar.

Ulbra who have already lost to Inter twice this year have had successful campaign despite being serious financial concerns. Ulbra have fitness doubts over fullbacks Jonathan and Júniors whilst former Grêmio midfielder Gavião is available after selection as coach Beto Almeida is not expected to name his side until shortly before kickoff.

Having only formed in 1998, Ulbra came close to winning the 2004 Campeonato Gaúcho, losing to Inter 2-1 in the final.

Line Up: Lauro; Bolívar, Álvaro, Índio, Kléber; Sandro, Magrão, Andrezinho, D'Alessandro; Nilmar, Alecsandro

Adriano Gabiru set for Guarani

Former Inter hero Adriano Gabiru is thought to be close to joining Guarani.

Gabiru, 31, will always be remembered by Internacional supporters for his winning goal in Inter’s FIFA World Club Cup win over Barcelona in 2006.

Since scoring the famous goal in Japan, Gabiru’s career has stuttered after unsuccessful spells with Figueirense, Sport and Goiás and he is now without a club.

Adriano Gabiru could be Vadão’s fist signing for the Campinas based side after the coach took over the crisis stricken Série B club last week.

Gabiru’s first game for Guarani could ironically be against Internacional in the Copa do Brasil second round, second leg in two weeks time.

Taison named third highest scorer in Brazil

After netting another two goals against Guarani midweek, 21 year old Taison has already scored 16 goals this season. A total which places him third in the list of the top goal scorers ‘artilheiros’ across all of Brazil.

Only Atlético-MG’s Diego Tardelli (18 goals) and highly rated Palmeiras striker Keirrison (17 goals) have scored more than the Pelotas born forward.

Taison who is contracted to Inter until 2013, will miss Sunday's semi-final with Ulbra following his red card against Grêmio in last weekend’s clássico.

List of top Artilheiro’s across Brazil:

Diego Tardelli (Atlético-MG) – 18 gols
Keirrison (Palmeiras) – 17 gols
Taison (Internacional) – 16 gols
Bruno Cazarine (Chapecoense) - 15 gols
Fabio Silva (Central-Pe) – 15 gols
Washington (São Paulo) – 14 gols
Ciro (Sport) – 14 gols

Tite forced to reshuffle for Semi Final

Tite will be forced to make at least two changes to his side for Sunday's semi-final clash with Ulbra. Victory in Sunday's fixture at the Beira-Rio would earn Inter a place in the Taça Fábio Koff against either Juventude or Caxias, but a growing list of suspension and injury doubts are expect to force changes to the team which defeated has defeated both Grêmio and Guarani this past week.

Magrão who unexpectedly missed out through injury against Guarani is a major doubt although the midfielder is expected to undergo further treatment this morning and his hoping to take part in this afternoon's training session. Elsewhere in midfield, D'Alessandro is line to make his first start following injury whilst Pablo Guiñazu is suspended after receiving his third yellow card in Sunday's Gre-Nal.

It remains to be seen whether central defender Álvaro will feature as he missed training following problems travelling back to Porto Alegre after being granted extended time in São Paulo to see family. Danny Morais or Danilo Silva are the likely candidates to replace Álvaro should he not be selected.

Meanwhile up front, Taison's suspension for the game should provide Alecsandro with a chance to prove himself. The powerful striker has impressed this year despite being limited to substitute appearances following the form this year of Taison and Nilmar. Alecsandro however is confident that he will have no problems in playing alongside Nilmar.

"There is a lot of quality so it will work. Nilmar is a player of Seleção level. I have trained hard to be able to us a good pairing", declared for former Cruzeiro forward after yesterday's training session.

Inter frustrated by late Guarani goal

Internacional were left frustrated last night after Romário’s late strike for Guarani forced their Copa do Brasil tie into a second leg, despite Taison scoring twice in a 2-1 win in Campinas, São Paulo.

Inter were well supported in the Estádio Brinco de Ouro da Princesa as Tite named an expected side with only one surprise as Glaydson started in central midfield in the surprise absence of Magrão. D’Alessandro continued his return from injury as he started on the bench.

Inter started brightly in the opening stages with Taison and Nilmar looked to test the Guarani defence. It was to be the home side who came closest to scoring though as against the run of play, Danilo Rios found himself in space on the edge of the box as he saw his effort bounce off the top of the cross bar. Inter replied shortly after as Andrezinho’s pass was met by Nilmar’s acrobatic effort which narrowly went wide on 16 minutes. Andrezinho was once again involved as Inter searched for the opening goal as his long distance free kick fizzed wide of the goal.

Guarani were finally undone though from a well created Inter goal which was started and finished by Inter’s explosive number seven. Taison fed the ball out wide to Guiñazu who’s deep cross was neatly headed by Andrezinho into the path of the oncoming Taison (27) who, fired the ball first time into the top right hand corner of the goal.

Guarani tried to respond but were lacking quality as Glauber and Valter tried to level for the recently relegated Paulista side.

In the second half, Inter continued to search for the second goal which would guarantee Inter their place into the third round of the Copa do Brasil and Andrezinho and Nilmar linked up well forcing ‘keeper Douglas, to save with his feet. Inter again came close from the proceeding corner. Nilmar tried to take advantage of some chaotic defending from Guarani as the ball bounced freely around the six yard box before Douglas gratefully pounced to secure the threat. Nilmar was looking increasingly likely to score Inter’s second and came close yet again when he superbly controlled an excellent long pass by Glaydson as Douglas was again required to save.

Guarani did begin to create some chances of their own however as the home side attacked down their right hand side. Lauro was forced to punch out Maranhão’s cross into the box for Álvaro to clear and shortly after, Maranhão was again involved in a move which fizzled out after Romário’s low cross ran across the Inter box to be met by Bolívar. Inter then retaliated as substitute Alecsandro blasted wide with a powerful effort from corner of the box before Taison (86), added his second with a well taken goal following a delightful one-two with Giuliano. With Inter looking assured a place into the second round, diasaster struck just two minutes later. Álvaro failed to deal with high Guarani ball into the defence which found it’s way to Romário (88) who’s goal salvaged an unexpected goal for Guarani, securing a second leg at the Beira Rio in two weeks time.

Despite two well worked goals from Inter, Guarani somehow kept the tie alive as Taison put in yet another impressive perforamance, taking his goal talley this year to 16 in all competitions.

Guarani v Inter

Following the beginning of the centenary celebrations and another victory against Grêmio, Inter’s busy week continues tonight with a the visit to the city of Campinas, São Paulo as the Colorado continue their Copa do Brasil campaign (21:50 local time).

Following Sunday’s Gre-Nal, Inter have not had any injury concerns and are able to select from almost a fully fit squad. D’Alessandro who made a substitute appearance in the clássico is expected to be named amongst the substitutes once again.

Inter’s fitness co-ordinator Fábio Mahseredjian revealed, “His schedule was to allow him to play against Grêmio. He is not yet ready to play 90 minutes”.

Tite also revealed his concerns about rushing the Argentine back. “D’Alessandro’s competitive spirit is import, now we must take care not to place the player at risk”, explained the coach.

In the absence of D’Alessandro it is thought that same which team which start against Grêmio will take to the field tonight at the Brinco de Ouro da Princesa.

A victory of two or more goals tonight would see the second leg of this second round fixture cancelled with Inter to face either Náutico or Criciúma in the last 16.

The arrival of in form Internacional in Campinas, could not have come at a worse time for Guarani. Despite having previously won the Brasileirão title once and finished runners up twice during the 1970’s and 80’s, the club are currently at one of their lowest points in their 98 year history.

Last weekend confirmed the club’s demotion to the São Paulo second division and on Monday, well travelled coach Vadão was appointed as the team’s new coach.

Probable Line Up: Lauro; Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Kléber; Sandro, Magrão, Guiñazu, Andrezinho, Taison, Nilmar

Danilo Silva signs new 5 year contract

Internacional have reportedly acquired 100% of Danilo Siva’s registration with the player signing a new five year contract with the Colorado.

Danilo Silva, 23, joined Inter last year on loan from Guarani. Inter then purchased 50% of his rights as the player broke into the first team this season.

Danilo who can play at right or centre back is seen by many as a natural successor to Bolívar whose long term future at Inter is in doubt with the player currently on loan from French club Monaco.

Danilo Silva has featured ten times for Internacional this year, scoring one goal.

Índio haunts Grêmio once again

Goals from Andrezinho and Índio secured Inter’s place in the Gauchão semi finals as the Colorado were victorious yet again against their historic rivals in a scrappy Rio Grande do Sul clássico.

Tite made no surprises for the clássico as he was able to select his preferred starting eleven with D’Alessandro also returning to the bench following injury.

Both teams looked to attack from the off with Taison going close for Inter whilst Grêmio attempted to take advantage of Lauro’s miss-kick inside the first ten minutes but the game soon turned lost momentum as the scrappy nature of the game prevented any momentum.

Grêmio were awarded a penalty after Kléber was adjudged to of fouled Fábio Santos inside the box, allowing Tchecho (19) to slot the ball into the bottom left corner to score the first goal of the 376th Gre-Nal.

As both sides struggled to settle into any pattern of play, Inter were awarded a penalty themselves. Andrezinho (33) squeezed in Inter’s equaliser after Nilmar was bundled over inside box by Thiego to level the scoreline.

Inter began the second half on top, pinning Grêmio back deep inside their own as Sandro blasted over from outside the box and Victor rushed out to save well from the feet of Nilmar. As Grêmio absorbed Colorado pressure, the visitors themselves to threaten and almost retook the lead as Jonas saw his free kick smash against the cross bar. Moments later, Guiñazu was forced to clear the ball off the Inter line.

The biggest cheer of the half so far however was reserved for the return of D’Alessandro who was brought on for Andrezinho on 64 minutes. With time running down on the clock and both teams eager to win, tensions finally spilt over after D’Alessandro appeared to of been barged over. With both sets of players tussling amongst each other, referee Leonardo Gaciba promptly dismissed Taison and Rafael Marques.

Five minutes later, Inter finally broke through the Grêmio defence. Substitute D’Alessandro flicked the ball over the Grêmio defence as Índio (78) was able lift the ball over Victor to put Inter in front.

The goal puts Índio two off Colorado legend Figueroa’s record as Inter’s highest scoring defender.
Grêmio desperate to equalise, Inter found themselves able to pick off their rivals on the counter attack as Tite introduced Alecsandro and Marcelo Cordeiro in the final stages. With just two minutes remaining however, Inter were fortunate not to concede an equaliser as Fábio Santos blasted wide in front of an open goal which signified Grêmio’s elimination from the 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho.

The result confirms a perfect weekend for Inter after a weekend of birthday celebrations. Tite’s side advance to the semi final stage and are now big favourites to win their 39th state title.

Inter v Grêmio

Following a day of celebration, the centenary party must stop as Inter welcome Grêmio to the Beira-Rio on the day after the night before. A clássico victory in the Taça Fabio Koff quarter final this afternoon (17:00 local time) would be the perfect way to mark Inter’s ongoing celebrations.

Inter president Fernando Carvalho insists that the celebrations have distracted the squad from what is set to be a decisive week with Inter also in action in the Copa do Brasil second round on Wednesday.

“Our focus is Gre-Nal,we are only thinking about this. Beyond everything else and the arrival of the centenary, we must keep this separate. This is about work, focus and concentration. The supporters make our party of 100 years, this is what I spelt out to the players. They want to be successful against the biggest adversary in our history”, affirmed Fernando Carvalho.

Tite will be hoping to continue Inter’s run of six Gre-Nal’s without defeat and is expected to call upon his strongest possible starting XI after resting several players in Inter’s comfortable 3-0 win against Avenida.

In form strike duo Taison and Nilmar are likely to be recalled as Walter and Alecsandro are likely to return to the bench despite scoring midweek. The main news surrounding the team is and is the return of Andrés D’Alessandro who is expected to named as a substitute after recovering from injury.

Kléber also returns to the side at left back after a three match absence following commitments with the Seleção.

Meanwhile, Grêmio have had a controversial campaign in this year’s Campeonato Gaúcho. Having decided to prioritize the Copa Libertadores, Grêmio have struggled in the Gauchão with a 4-0 defeat to Caxias last week forcing them to finish fourth in Group B.

Coach Celso Roth is once again unlikely to be able to field his strongest possible side as Grêmio came a close eye on Tuesday’s Libertadores tie with Bolivian side Aurora striker Alex Mineiro and full back Ruy unavailable with Herrera and Makelele likely to be named as substitutes.

Probable Line Up: Lauro; Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Kléber; Sandro, Magrão, Guiñazu, Andrezinho; Taison, Nilmar

Latest Grêmio defeat guarantees Gre-Nal

To confirm the final stages of the 2009 Campeonato Gaúcho, the top four from each of the two groups meet in the knockout stages to decide the winner of the Taça Fabio Koff.

As Inter have already won the first stage of this year’s state championship, the Taça Fernando Carvalho, victory in the second half of the tournament, the Taça Fabio Koff would automatically confirm Inter as 2009 winners of the Campeonato Gaúcho, without the need of a grand final.

With Inter comfortably qualifying from Group One, all that remained to be decided was Inter’s opponents in the next round and as Inter strolled to comfortable 3-0 win against Avenida, Grêmio were facing yet another crisis as their reserve team fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat to Caxias.

Elsewhere Veranópolis secured second place in Group One behind Inter with well earned 1-0 victory over Juventude who finish fourth in the group. Inter-SM continued their successful campaign finishing third following a 2-1 victory away to Esportivo.

Santa Cruz secured their place in the second round as they topped Group Two after defeating São Jose 2-0. Despite beating Ypiranga 1-0 in Canoas, Ulbra finished second in Group Two only on goal difference equalling Santa Cruz’ points total.

With last Saturday’s draw against Juventude securing Inter’s place as leaders of Group One, Tite is expected to rest all his first team regulars to give an opportunity to the untested and younger players in the squad.

The most notable names expected on Tite’s team sheet will are strikers Walter and Alecsandro. The pair would’ve been no doubt frustrated at their limited opportunities as Taison and Nilmar have shorn this year. Speaking ahead of the game to the Correio do Povo newspaper Walter explained, “It gives me great pride to come back. I have to continue working hard because new opportunities can appear. I am much more experience and I know that Inter has other great players. Now for me, all games are essential”.

Marcelo Cordeiro will start his third successive game in the absence of Kléber whilst Danny Morais and Arílton are likely to start, with Michel Alves replacing Lauro in goal.

Exciting attacking midfielder Giuliano will once again be looking to impress in a midfield which should also see Maycon, Glaydson and Rosinei all feature.

Avenida have struggled in the Taça Fabio Koff and are currently fifth in Group One.

Line Up: Michel Alves; Arílton, Danilo Silva, Danny Morais, Marcelo Cordeiro; Maycon, Glaydson, Rosinei e Giuliano; Walter, Alecsandro

Inter centenary promo

Starting this week, Inter will be advertising the club's centenary across TV screens and cinema's in Rio Grande do Sul.

The advert tells the story of a lonely old man fondly remembering Inter's past triumph's who is then joined by his Colorado family to watch the big game.

A really nice video, thanks to Henrique for the link!

Inter to sell naming rights for Beira-Rio – Estádio Banrisul!

Reports are suggesting that Internacional are close to selling the naming rights of the Estádio Beira-Rio.

Sources close to the club have revealed that the bank – Banrisul, whose headquarters are based in Porto Alegre, are close to finalising negotiations with Inter, with the Beira-Rio expected to become known as the ‘Estádio Banrisul’.

It is thought that the agreement between Inter and Banrisul, who already are already Inter’s shirt sponsors, will begin once the Beira-Rio redevelopment project has been completed.

The decision would help cover the financial costs of redeveloping the Beira-Rio ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Danilo Silva voted as preferred right back/lateral

In the blog’s latest poll Danilo Silva was voted ahead of Arílton and Bolívar as your preferred choice to wear the number 2 shirt this year.

Danilo won the poll with 66% of the votes whilst Arílton (17%) finished just ahead of Bolívar (12%).

Bolívar who has made it public that he prefers to play in central defence has received criticism from supporters this year after being continually picked at right back with Tite warm on the idea of a ‘European’ style defence employing a defensive full back.

Young Danilo Silva meanwhile is also firstly a central defender but his appearances on the right, following an impressive debut against Grêmio, indicate he is more equipped to provide Inter an attacking option down the right side.

Arílton, another young player who arrived from Coritiba this season, has not found himself involved in the first team too often this year as he continues his development on the training ground.

Thanks to everyone who voted, another poll will appear soon.
