War of words rumbles on as final approaches

The bad feeling between Inter and Corinthians has continued in the build up towards tomorrow’s crucial second leg final.

Early today, reports suggested that Corinthians were questioning Inter defender Bolívar’s eligibility after the right back had signed a permanent contract with Inter since being initially registered with the CBF as a loan player.

Inter’s vice president Fernando Carvalho wasted no time in responding to the São Paulo based club’s claims and revealed to Radio Gaúcho that Inter are already in possession of documentation which confirms Bolívar can play.

In a busy day for Carvalho, the vice president also presented a DVD which highlights several highly dubious refereeing decisions which favour Corinthians.

“Corinthians is a sacred cow in Brazilian soccer that cannot have anything against it”, protested Carvalho.

News of the DVD was predictably met with dismay by Corinthians officials who retaliated by speaking of their regret the Carvalho held a senior position within the Clube dos 13 organisation.

You can watch the DVD here (released by Hotmedia)

Aston Villa interest in Taison

UK based website Sport.co.uk are claiming that Taison is interesting Aston Villa.

Details of any possible move by the English Premier side remain sketchy and the story and no official comment has been made from Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Kléber and Nilmar have joined up with the Inter squad as their preparations for tomorrow’s Copa do Brasil final continued yesterday afternoon behind closed doors.

The pair arrived back in Porto Alegre at midday following Brazil’s successful Confederations Cup campaign and have both been declared fit by Inter and are both likely to start against Corinthians.

Inter’s major doubt going into tomorrow’s game is the fitness of Sandro.

Bolaños hat-trick gives Inter much needed win

Ecuadorian Luis Bolaños has put an end to Inter’s poor run of form after scoring a remarkable second half hat-trick last night at the Beira-Rio.

The 3-0 victory, Inter’s first in six; put’s the Colorado level on points with Atlético-MG and gives Inter a much need boost ahead of Wednesday Copa do Brasil final second leg.

Inter as expected, fielded a reserve line up as Bolaños made his home debut in a 3-5-2 formation but, it was the two goalkeepers who impressed most in the first half.

Coritiba started the stronger of the two sides as striker Marcos Aurélio forced Lauro into action with two efforts. The first was saved from Lauro after taking a deflection off Sorondo whilst the second, a twenty five yard strike, was pushed onto the post by the Inter goalkeeper.

Minutes later, it was the turn of Coritiba’s goalkeeper to be called in action. Vanderlei was forced to save well twice in succession from Alecsandro’s free kick and then Álvaro’s rebounding header from close range.

With both teams going close to breaking the deadlock Coritiba were once again kept out by Lauro. Forward Ariel rose above Sorondo to connect with Marcio Gabriel’s well placed cross only for Lauro to scramble across the goal line to palm the ball away at full stretch.

With the score 0-0 at half time, Tite made one change as defender Arílton was brought off for Daniel who has recently returned to the Beira-Rio after a loan spell with Caxias.

Alecsandro had the first chance on the second half as a sweeping Inter attack led to Giuliani slipping the ball through to the Inter striker, who saw his shot again saved well by Vanderlei. Inter’s next opportunity was prove decisive however. The Coritiba defence failed to clear Alecsandro’s low pass into the box found Bolaños (62) who made no mistake, finishing first time to score his first goal for the club.

Inter’s second came shortly afterwards as Inter's forward pairing combined once more. Bolaños (69) notched his second with a neat finish at the far post after Alecsandro's measured pass.

With Coritiba now stunned, Inter extended their lead once more taking full advantage of some shocking defending from the visitors. As the Coritiba defence inexplicably gave away possession on the edge of the area, Inter’s man of the moment was on hand once again with another neat finish into the bottom corner as Bolaños (72) completed a twelve minute hat-trick, confirming an impressive debut in front of the Colorado torcedor for the recently acquired Ecuadorian forward.

The result puts an end to a miserable run of results which ironically began with a defeat to Coritiba. Another 3-0 score line on Wednesday will be enough to see Inter crowned Copa do Brasil winners. On the back of this performance, the question must be asked whether Bolaños will now start against Corinthians.

Brasileirão Round Up

From Goal.com:

Internacional share top spot of the table after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coritiba at the Beira-Rio stadium on Sunday. After a slow start Inter dominated their opponents and a superb second half hat-trick from Ecuadorian international Luis Bolaños gave them the three points.

The Porto Alegre-based outfit join Atlético Mineiro at the top of the standings with 17 points. Atlético have a slightly superior goal difference.

In Sao Paulo, the Paulista derby between Palmeiras and Santos ended in a 1-1 tie, while a frustrating scoreless draw was the final outcome of the Rio de Janeiro derby between crosstown rivals Fluminense and Flamengo. The match marked the departure of Fluminense attacker Thiago Neves, who will return to Saudi Arabia.

Sunday's other matches saw third-placed Vitória thump Santo Andre 4-1 and Sport Recife climbed from the bottom of the table with an unexpected 3-1 win over Grêmio.

Gremio fielded a number of reserves for the clash in order to keep their starters fresh ahead of the Copa Libertadores semi-final decider with Cruzeiro next week.

On Saturday, São Paulo returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Náutico at the Morumbi stadium. Sao Paulo's goals were converted by Jean Rolt and Hernanes. It was a perfect debut for Ricardo Gomes, the new coach of the defending champions.

Meanwhile, Atlético Paranaense edged Corinthians 1-0 with a first half strike from veteran Paulo Baier. It was their second win of the season, and particularly important because last week they were held at home by Palmeiras in the final minute of the match.

Belo Horizonte giants Cruzeiro sneaked past Avaí 1-0 with a goal from Ze Carlos. It was only Cruzeiro's third win of the season. The club are only a step way from progressing to the final of the Copa Libertadores, and for this reason rested a number of their key players in the league to concentrate on the international tournament

Inter v Coritiba

Six games without victory, three consecutive defeats and a two goal disadvantage to turn around in Wednesday’s decisive Copa do Brasil final, Inter are in free fall as Coritiba visit the Beira-Rio tonight (18:30 local time). Despite the negativity surround Inter at the moment, Atlético-MG's defeat last night means that an Inter victory can put the Colorado back top of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

With a heavy emphasis on Wednesday’s match with Corinthians, Tite has confirmed that Inter will be fielding a reserve side. The coach however remained positive when speaking to the press yesterday,

“It’s a fact that we’re in a sequence of negative results but we were unbeaten champions of the Gauchão with this squad and we’re also in the final of the Copa do Brasil with this squad. Regardless of names, we have an obligation to win against Coritiba”.

Of the team which started against LDU midweek, only Lauro, Marcelo Cordeiro, Andrezinho and Alecsandro are expected to continue.

Álvaro who was dropped following the defeat to Flamengo last week is likely to return to the team and Sorondo is also expected to make a rare start. Maycon and Glaydson are expected to feature in midfield along with Giuliano, who is struggling for form. It is also suggested that young forward Talles Cunha will be chosen ahead of Leandrão up front.

Despite a poor start to the Brasileirão, Coritiba are currently 14th in the table and appear to of turned the corner and arrive in Porto Alegre on the back of consecutive wins against Flamengo and Náutico.

Having already played Inter twice this season in the Copa do Brasil, René Simões’ side will be no strangers to the Beira-Rio.

INTER: Lauro; Danilo, Álvaro, Sorondo, Marcelo Cordeiro; Maycon, Glaydson, Giuliano, Andrezinho; Talles Cunha, Alecsandro

CORITIBA: Vanderlei; Cleiton, Pereira, Felipe; Marcio Gabriel, Jailton, Pedro Ken, Marcelinho Paraiba, Carlinhos Paraíba; Marcos Aurélio, Ariel

Brasileirão Preview

From ESPNSTAR.com:

Roth ready for tough test

Atlético Mineiro will not be underestimating Gremio Barueri as they seek to maintain top spot in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend.

The 'Galo' lead the national championship with 17 points, three above Internacional, who host Coritiba on Sunday.

Atlético coach Celso Roth said: "Barueri were only promoted to the top flight this season (but) they have a very skilled squad. We have to respect them, as we do with the other teams."

Internacional are seeking to bounce back from their defeat in the Recopa Sudamericana to Libertadores Cup holders LDU Quito this week and boss Tite is considering changing his team around to field a mixed squad.

Vitoria challenge Santo Andre hoping to hold on to third place.

Fourth-placed Palmeiras will be looking to kick-start their challenge for the title against derby rivals Santos after bowing out of the Libertadores Cup at the semi-final stage to Uruguayan side Nacional.

Midfielder Diego Souza said: "The Libertadores is part of the past. The elimination hurt us a lot. But we have a derby ahead and we need to win it as we are in a good spot in the standings. We need to climb to the top places so that will give us the strength to play the Brasileirão," said Souza.

Santos defender Paulo Henrique Rodrigues believes some members of the squad need to pull their weight if they are to climb the table.

"We have a good system; we reached the Campeonato Paulista finals with it," Rodrigues said.

"Our biggest problem is that some players are comfortable in their places and leave all the hard work to the men of the back."

Corinthians visit Atlético Paranaense but with their mind on the Copa do Brasil finals with Internacional that kick off next week.

"Everybody wants the Copa do Brasil title, which is very close. This is my objective and the team's," said midfielder Cristian.

Flamengo striker Adriano is confident in defeating arch-rivals Fluminense to continue the good spell.

"I hope we can play a good game and bring happiness to our fans. We came from an important victory and we have to continue that way," said the former Inter Milan forward.

In other matches, three-time reigning champions Sao Paulo welcome Náutico, Cruzeiro meet Avaí, Botafogo play Goiás and Sport host Gremio.

Inter UK Special Feature

Regular Inter UK contributor Ronald Gordo returns this week with his views on Inter’s sudden decline.

The legends of ghosts of the Middle Ages say a warrior who received a task from God and was unable to meet it is condemned to remain on Earth... your soul forever trying to fulfil the mission... but a soul has no body, has no power and has no desire, and - before right time - a soul cannot meet the old demand...

In first leg against Corinthians, Inter's players were unable to fulfil our revenge, and now only their ghost haunts the Beira-Rio.

Yesterday I was at the Beira-Rio and saw, inside and outside the field, a spectrum of a team and only spirits in tribunes.

Índio does not know not defend, Sandro cannot occupy the spaces. Taison cannot get goals. Nobody shows strength, agility, intelligence, will...

We, the fans, were apathetic, disinterested, almost absent. In tribunes, no one spoke of this game, but of next Wednesday, the revenge against Corinthians, 3-0... Nobody was singing, nobody was encouraging or even interested in game.

When Tite called Leandrão to enter game, the Beira-Rio exploded in boos and whistles. Leandrão does not deserve it. In few matches he involved, Leandrão has not done anything good or bad to warrant hatred of the Colorado’s. He was sent off in the game against Corinthians, and Inter is losing the game. For all us, the game at the Estádio Pacaembu is not over.

Only Guiñazu still play’s, but we know he came from another world. Anyway, one against eleven... and even Guiñazu show rush and despair, because he thought the game was 0-2.

We only lost 1-0 because LDU are a very bad team. If the Ecuadorians knew how to play good football, Inter would’ve lost by 4 or 5. When LDU scored their goal, the stadium was even more silent, as if Corinthians has scored a third goal. The more courageous players, like Bolívar, began to fight... the rest was even more apathetic.

My friend Matt, the legends also say that, in due time, a ghost will have the opportunity to save his reputation and his honour. The time will come.

When arriving Wednesday, Tite, all players, all us, Colorado’s, we will have the opportunity to save our souls.

Do not worry my friend; the legends always end with a happy ending.

Have a nice day.

Inter fall to LDU defeat in Beira-Rio

Inter’s poor run of form continued last night as LDU snatched a 1-0 win at the Beira-Rio as Inter fell to their third successive defeat. Bolívar’s second half dismissal completed a miserable night for the Colorado’s.

Inter’s apparent loss of form comes at a bad time with Inter already needing to turn around a two goal deficit against Corinthians next week in the Copa do Brasil final second leg.

Prior to the game, Álvaro was paid the price for the side’s poor performance against Flamengo and was replaced by Danny Morais, as Inter welcomed back D’Alessandro, Taison and Bolívar back into the side.

In the opening exchanges, LDU tried to stifle the Colorado with their 4-6-1 formation as Taison and D’Alessandro worked hard to craft an opening as Nilmar’s absence was continued to be missed. As Inter failed to create a clear cut chance the Ecuadorians began to grow in confidence as they looked to counter attack Inter.

LDU’s tactic paid off early on in the second half as Bieler (57) saw his shot saved by Lauro but converted the rebound to give LDU a surprise lead.

The goal clearly made an impacted on Inter who were stunned to fall behind. Leandrão was brought on for Alecsandro but failed to make an impact as Tite attempted to kick start his side but shortly afterwards Bolívar was issued a straight red card midway through the half after appearing to have lashed out at an LDU player. Sandro added further concern with just minutes remaining after picking up a thigh injury as the visitor’s take a narrow 1-0 advantage back to Quito for the second leg in two weeks’ time.

Immediately after the game, Índio spoke to Globo-

“We cannot be discouraged. We lose but we have to go there and revert the scoreline. We must do what this club have always done – work and search to turn it around”, explained the defender.

Meanwhile, Sandro will undergo treatment this afternoon before having an MRI scan. According to Pablo Rabello, head of the club’s medical department, the young midfielder now a serious doubt for both of Inter’s games against Coritiba and Corinthians.

Speaking to the press after the game, Tite tried to remain positive, believing in the squads ability but acknowledged that Inter’s performance was sub standard,

“The result is a crisis. The crisis is the dissatisfaction of the coaching staff and players who want a better performance.”

Inter v LDU

Inter are rewarded by last year’s Copa Sudamericana triumph with a place in the ‘Recopa’ against 2008 Libertadores winners LDU, albeit a very different side from that which unexpectedly defeated Fluminense a year ago.

Tite will undoubtedly be looking to use tonight’s first leg to turn around an uncharacteristic and untimely run of five games without victory which cumulated in a crippling 4-0 defeat to Flamengo on Sunday night.

Inter are big favourites ahead of the first leg and will be looking to capitalise on their home advantage (21:50 kick off local time).

Former LDU forward Luis Bolaños is not expected to start against his former club after making his Inter debut in the weekend’s defeat in Rio. Inter’s preparations for tonight’s game centre’s around the return of Taison and D’Alessandro who are set to return to the side whilst Guiñazu is expected to be declared fit despite picking up a knee injury.

Inter’s previous other success in the Recopa came in 2007 after the Colorado came from an away 2-1 first leg defeat to defeat Mexican side Pachuca 4-0 at the Beira-Rio. From the 2007 winning side, only Índio is expected to play tonight. The experienced defender spoke of his delight of playing in another Recopa.

“It brings a lot of satisfaction to be able to play in this final. I am lucky to have victorious players on my side. This strong philosophy to build a strong squad each season makes it possible to play in this final”, Índio explained.

LDU who are coached by Uruguayan Jorge Fosatti, are expected to field the recently acquired pair of Argentine striker Claudio Graf and Paraguayan defensive midfielder Enrique Vera, who returns to the club after a spell in Mexico.

LDU are currently 2nd in the Ecuadorian Primera ‘A’ with 33 points (W9 D6 L4) after 19 rounds.

INTER: Lauro; Bolívar, Índio, Álvaro, Marcelo Cordeiro; Sandro, Guiñazu, Andrezinho, D'Alessandro; Taison, Alecsandro

LDU train at Olímpico

After a light training session at the Estádio Olímpico yesterday, LDU coach Jorge Fossati has revealed to Zero Hora the important of the Recopa title and that he plans to play a 3-5-2 formation.

“For us the Recopa is everything. If we will are champions it will be an international title not only for LDU but for the whole of Ecuador”, explained the coach of the Quito based outfit.

“Inter are without Nilmar and Kléber. Bolaños, a star of ours for a year is still a reserve here. This is the force of our opponents. We will attack sensibly but our opponents have already been World Champions and have players in the Brazilian national team”, added Fossati.

Inter have been handed positive news ahead of tomorrow’s game as the club look to turn around a run of two consecutive defeats.

Club doctor Luciano Ramires has confirmed that Guiñazu is expected to be available to play despite having physio on a knee injury. Inter are also expected to welcome D’Alessandro and Taison back into the side which lost 4-0 away to Flamengo on the weekend.

A full preview of the Recopa first leg against LDU will appear here tomorrow

Inter linked with Uruguayan defender

According to Bandeirantes radio today, Internacional are interested in signing Uruguayan centre back Sebastián Coates.

The 18 year old is currently with Montevideo based club, Nacional and would cost Inter a reported €2.5 million.

Reports linking Inter with Sebastián Coates emerged after entrepreneur Valdir Silveira purchased 30% of the player’s registration.

Meanwhile another Uruguayan defender, Gonzalo Sorondo, spoke to Zero Hora following his car crash on Monday.

“I was going home after arriving back from Rio de Janeiro when a car violently went into my the side of my car. Fortunately it went into just behind me. Perhaps if not, I would not be here”, explained Sorondo.

Bolívar ties up Inter deal

Bolívar yesterday signed a new contract with Inter which will now keep the defender at the Beira-Rio until 2012.

The future of Bolívar, 28, had been in doubt as his previous loan agreement between Monaco and Inter was due to expire at the end of this month. It was widely thought that Inter would not be able to afford to negotiate a permanent deal with Monaco, although it is thought that a third part has financed the deal.

Bolívar had rejected advances from São Paulo to remain at Inter and spoke of his joy to be staying with the club-

“I am very content. Here is where I feel at home. The three year contract represents the confidence that the directors have in me and this is very rewarding. I am confident of participating in the Copa do Brasil final”, he declared.

Inter UK Feature: Does Nilmar's future lie at Manchester United?

British based newspaper the ‘Daily Mirror’ are leading a story today that suggests Manchester United are considering making a £20 million (approx €23 million/RS$65 million) offer for Nilmar.

The story can be viewed in full here but what is the likelihood of Inter’s number nine moving from the red side of Porto Alegre to the red side of Manchester?

As you are probably aware, Manchester United’s biggest star Cristiano Ronaldo is very close to joining Real Madrid for an incredible £80 million. The news of Ronaldo’s departure from Old Trafford comes at a bad time for the club, just weeks after they were comprehensively beaten by a free flowing, attacking Barcelona side in the Champions League Cup Final.

This weekend saw worse news emanate from the English Premier League champions as officials confirmed that another striker, Carlos Tevez would also be leaving the club. Tevez is now set to join either Chelsea or Manchester United’s local rivals Manchester City, in a move which would cast more disappointment amongst the Man Utd supporters.

So where does Nilmar and Internacional fit into all of this? Manchester United often played a 4-3-3 formation last year. This would usually feature in Ronaldo and Rooney playing either side of Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov or Carlos Tevez. With just six weeks to go until the start of the new season Man Utd are without two of their favoured four strikers.

The £20 million pound fee which the Daily Mirror suggests seems a larger amount and it is certainly larger than the fee that was reported when Napoli and Real Zaragoza were keen on signing Nilmar. But, with Manchester United losing two important players, it is suggested that they will use the money generated from Ronaldo’s sale to Real Madrid, to be ruthless and decisive in the transfer market. Manchester United cannot simply afford to lose out on any of their top targets. The lure of £20 million is sure to be too much for Inter to reject as Inter prepare to initiate a bidding war for the Seleção striker, but how will Nilmar fit into Manchester United set up?

With Inter frequently playing with three forwards, it is likely Nilmar would prefer to play the most central role. However with the position being occupied by Berbatov, it would be most likely Sir Alex Ferguson would want to exploit Nilmar’s explosive pace on the right hand side leaving Wayne Rooney to play on the left side. In the high tempo, intense atmosphere that is the English Premiership, Nilmar’s pace along with clinical finishing would suit the league well however doubts will emerge over Nilmar’s physical build. Referee’s in the English Premier League do not generally give as many free kicks as the referee’s in Brazil so whilst Nilmar may be used to being pushed and pulled and tightly marked in the Brazil, he will not be awarded free kicks as often in England.

My personal belief from reading the various reports,
Daily Mirror, Sky Sports, Sentanta Sports is that Nilmar’s time at Inter could be coming to an end and although I think he has the talent to be a success, if he does move to Manchester United, I think he will need time to adapt before showing his true outstanding ability.

Picture: Is Nilmar set for a move to England?

D’Alessandro and Taison cleared for LDU

After a disappointing week for the club, Inter have been given some positive news ahead of Thursday’s Recopa first leg as D’Alessandro and Taison are both expected to be fit to face LDU.

D’Alessandro has been struggling with a tendon problem but trained yesterday afternoon without any pain whilst Taison who has a thigh concern, worked with Élio Carravetta during yesterday’s session before revealing to the press that he will also be available to Tite.

Meanwhile, Magrão is definitely ruled out for the next two matches at least. The club’s Medical Department are refusing to give estimation as to when Magrão could return with the midfielder already ruled out of next weekend’s match with Coritiba. The club are becoming increasingly concerned he could miss Inter’s crucial Copa do Brasil final second leg.

Inter reach 98,448 sócio's

Inter have taken a step closer to achieving it's centenary target of having 100,000 sócios (registered paying members) with the announcement that the club now has 98,448 sócios.

The amount, the largest in South America, means that Inter now need only another 1,552 sócio's to achieve their 100,000 target.

The sócio's pay a small amount each month directly to the club and is a major source of income for the club. In return, the sócio's are able to vote in the club elections and admission to get into the Beira-Rio is reduced.

Competition Winner!!

Last week I held a competition to celebrate the first year of this blog. The prize was to win a Wales football shirt (below).

The question I asked was ‘Which UK based club did D’Alessandro play for?’

The answer of course was c. Portsmouth.

The winner chosen at random is Eduardo Natale from Pelotas, RS.

Congratulations to Eduardo, I’ll be sending a shirt to Brazil this week. At least one person has received some good news after last night’s awful result!

Thank you to everyone who entered and thanks for taking part and showing interest in the blog. I hope I am able to run another competition soon.

Obrigado everyone!

Inter suffer Maracanã nightmare

Internacional crashed to their first Brasileirão defeat last night as Adriano led Flamengo to a 4-0 victory at the Maracanã. The former Inter Milan striker grabbed a hat-trick to leave Inter empty handed from what was another unconvincing Colorado performance.

Inter began the game with D’Alessandro, Nilmar, Bolívar and Magrão all unavailable whilst Taison was also omitted from the squad with an injury concern as Bolaños started his first game for Inter.

The Colorado went a goal behind as Adriano (13) broke through the Inter defence to neatly finish past Lauro. Emerson (36) then capped off a well worked goal as Léo Moura broke down the right hand side for Flamengo to double their lead. Worse was still to come however as Adriano (45+2) scored a free kick shortly before half time.

Inter began the second half with Tite making two changes as Glaydson and Leandrão were introduced for Giuliano and Bolaños. Despite the changes Inter were unable to offer nothing of note as Flamengo looked the more likely to score with Lauro being forced to save Toró’s powerful long range strike. Worse was yet to come for Inter as Flamengo were awarded a penalty after Glaydson brought down Léo Moura inside the box. Adriano (67) stepped up and coolly converted the spot kick to seal his hat trick confirming a miserable night for Inter.

With LDU Quito visiting the Beira-Rio on Thursday in the Recopa fist leg, Inter must pick themselves up and build momentum from a match Tite later described as “the worst performance of the year”.

Despite the defeat, Inter remain second in the Campeonato Brasileiro with Atlético-MG building up a three point lead following their 3-2 win away to Santos.

Flamengo v Inter

After defeat in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final, Inter will be looking for their first win in five games when they visit the Maracanã to take on Flamengo this evening (18:30 local time).

A victory against 14th placed Flamengo could put Inter back top of the Brasileirão with Atlético-MG facing a difficult trip to Santos, but Tite still finds himself without several key players. Magrão is the latest to be ruled out following a thigh injury and the midfielder joins a growing list of absentees which already includes D’Alessandro, Nilmar, Bolívar and Kléber. Young attacking midfielder Giuliano is expected to come into the side.

Recent arrival at the Beira-Rio, Luis Bolaños has been registered with the CBF and after two weeks training with his new club, the Ecuadorian forward will be named on the bench but is expected to play some part of the match.

Flamengo meanwhile face Inter after consecutive defeats against Sport and a crushing 5-0 defeat to Coritiba last weekend as coach Cuca finds himself fighting for his job. Inter target Ibson is expected to start, which if the case, would rule out a move to Inter or any other Brasileirão club with the midfielder playing seven games for Fla.

Flamengo: Bruno; Welinton, Ronaldo Angelim, Fabrício; Léo Moura, Toró, Willians, Ibson, Juan; Emerson, Adriano

Bolaños set to make Inter debut against Fla

Inter could be boosted by the availability of recent signing Luis Bolaños for tomorrow’s game against Flamengo.

The 24 year old forward has not featured for Inter since joining last month but has been undergoing an intensive conditioning programme with Elio Carravetta. Yesterday, the player’s registration was confirmed in the CBF’s BID document, confirming that the Ecuadorian is eligible to play in tomorrow’s clash in the Maracanã.

“He won’t play from the start, but it’s an option to bring him into the game”, anticipated Tite after yesterday’s training session.

Meanwhile, Bolaños was praised by defender Danny Morais.

“He is a very quick player, who passes well. It’s good that today I play in the same team as him”, quipped the centre back.

One player who will not be available to Tite however, is Magrão. The midfielder underwent a MRI scan yesterday which confirmed he has a thigh injury. There are now concerns that he will not be recover ahead of Thursday’s Recopa first leg with LDU Quito.

Inter meanwhile will undergo their final training session this morning at the Beira-Rio before departing for Rio de Janeiro later this afternoon.

A full match preview of the Flamengo game will appear here tomorrow.

Guiñazu: “I very much believe”

Inter’s Argentine captain Pablo Guiñazu has urged the club and its supporters to believe in the team ahead of the Copa do Brasil final second leg on 1st July.

“I very much belief. They are hard opponents. Our confidence is impressive and we very much believe. We know of our potential “, declared the popular midfielder, known as ‘El Cholo’.

Inter can expect the return of key first team players for the second leg at the Beira-Rio with Nilmar, Kléber and D’Alessandro all expected to be available.

Inter UK Special Feature

Another Friday so here's Ronaldo Gordo’s latest piece for Inter UK. Following Tuesday’s defeat, this week Ronald looks at Inter’s ability of overcome against the odds throughout its proud 100 year old history in another well written piece.

Today, the Gaúcho newspaper Correio do Povo republished, in the historical section "A Century Ago", the following news which was originally reported on June 18, 1909 – ‘Sport Club Internacional challenge Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto-Alegrense to a match that will be played on 27th this month’.

Because Grêmio had other commitments, the game would occur on July 18, 1909. This was the first game of Internacional... and we lost 0-10.

Terrible! We had no experience, no headquarters, training field, balls or other stuff... and lost our first game 0-10.

If they were intelligent and reasonable people, Henrique Poppe and the other founding fathers of Colorado would go do something else, like play tennis or watch the horse raccing... but they insisted on carrying on, only to lose the second game 1-10...

Again, it was time to quit their dreams, because the accumulated balance was getting calamitously low (1-20). With the energy that madmen could possess, the Poppe’s remained firm to build one of the biggest football clubs in the world. In time, we would eventually record more wins than the opponent (129-107).

Yesterday, after Corinthians 2-0 Internacional, I thought about quitting. In fact, I wrote this... but your last post and this old "new" made me think...

For us, it is always more difficult... the championships of 1975 and 1976 were won with determination, dedication and overcoming against the odds... Today, it is easy to talk about the unbeaten championship of 1979, but in semi final against Palmeiras, first leg, we were twice losing the game (0-1, 1-2) before coming back to win 3-2.

In the 1992 Copa do Brasil final, Inter lost fist leg 1-2 and in second leg, needed a penalty in the 87th minute to win 1-0 and to be the champion.

Has anyone forgotten that we lost the first match against LDU in 2006 Copa Libertadores? Or that we had a player sent off at the beginning of the Libertadores final, first leg, against an all-powerful São Paulo, inside their home?

My friend Matt, if you look in the history of Internacional, will not find a single championship easy, not a single work easy... for us, it is always more difficult... while others faced small clubs such as Hamburg, we had to defeat Barcelona, with more stars than a constellation... while others make money from the government, we suffer to gather cents and bricks to build our home... all the occsassions the referee has doubts, he decides against us...

This is our history! As the Christians say, accept the truth and the truth shall make you free. Our history, our home, our pride, everything was built with effort.

With the return of Nilmar, D'Alessandro, Kléber and Bolivar, with 56 thousand Colorado’s in the Giant, with the whole team on the field and all of us at the side of the field, we can win the 2009 Copa do Brasil. If we could not overcome the difficulties, we would not be worthy of our history... In fact, we would not be Colorado’s.

My friend Matt, if you look at the past and the present carefully, you will see who is Corinthians, not us, who should be worried.

Have a nice day, Matt, and remember a ancient gaucho proverb: Is not dead who still struggle. Não tá morto, quem peleia.

Inter return to Porto Alegre

The Internacional squad returned to Porto Alegre this afternoon following last night’s 2-0 defeat in the Copa do Brasil final first leg.

Much of Inter’s disappointment has been taken out on referee Héber Roberto Lopes whose controversial decision not to award a Inter penalty led to Ronaldo scoring to double Corinthian’s lead at the other end.

Vice President Fernando Carvalho summed up Inter’s feelings revealing.

“It was lamentable. His performance was ridiculous. He did not award Alecsandro a third minute penalty and did not give one card to any of the Corinthians player’s who would of missed the second leg. Their midfielders fouled the entire night and were not punished”, he fumed before leaving São Paulo.

Meanwhile as Inter arrived in Porto Alegre, right back Bolívar was leaving the Gaúcho capital as he flew to France in an attempt to clear his future with his club Monaco. Bolívar’s loan deal at Inter expires at the end of the month and Bolívar has travelled in person to negotiate his future.

Inter sign young central defender

Inter have unexpectedly announced the signing of central defender Gustavo Valezi.

The 19 year old joins Inter from São Paulo based club Bragantino.

Valezi initially moves to the Beira-Rio on loan until February 2010 with Inter having an option in place to extend the youngsters contract for a further three years. He is thought to be a strong central defender with good pace.

“It is an excellent chance for me. I have signed an excellent contract and I am very happy. It will be an honour to defend the shirt of the Colorado”, he claimed.

Inter fall to first leg defeat in Pacaembu

Inter find themselves 2-0 down at the half way stage of the Copa do Brasil final after a disappointing defeat to Corinthians last night.

Jorge Henrique (26) capped off a well worked move to put Corinthians in front midway through the first half before Ronaldo (53) finished past a hapless Índio to score Corinthians’ second.

In a poor Inter performance, Taison wasted a string of opportunities whilst Alecsandro looked ineffective with D’Alessandro and Nilmar sorely missed. To cap off a miserable night for Inter, substitute Leandrão was sent off after picking up two yellow cards.

The result leaves Inter with a huge hurdle to overcome in the second leg in two weeks time but with the advantage of playing inside the Beira-Rio, if anyone can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, Inter can.

Corinthians v Inter

In the biggest game so far of the Colorado centenary year, Inter face Corinthians tonight in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final at the Estádio Pacaembu (21:50 local time).

Inter arrived in São Paulo last night minus four key players with Kléber, Nilmar, Bolívar and D’Alessandro all unavailable as Tite looks to take a positive result back to the Beira-Rio for the second leg.

With Inter winning their only Copa do Brasil title in 1992 Tite knows all about winning the Copa do Brasil having won the tournament with Grêmio in 2001, defeating Corinthians in the final. Corinthians were also eliminated at the final stage last year after falling to defeat to Sport.

“The statisticians like to refer to this but what matters most at this moment is the determination of the squad and solidarity on the pitch. We’re looking to be balanced and show maturity in the Pacaembu”, explained Tite.

Despite missing key players, Inter are boosted by the return of captain Guiñazu and goalkeeper Lauro who completes a one match ban.

“We are confident of the quality in the squad. The players who’re coming into the team are playing very well”, evaluated Lauro.

Meanwhile Inter’s influential midfielder Guiñazu issued a rallying call to his team-mates declaring, “It is a final. We have to play the game of our lives”.

Ahead of the game, much of the speculation revolves around Tite’s defensive plans. With Bolívar suspended, reports had suggested that Índio would replace Danilo Silva at right back, allowing Danny Morais and Álvaro to play in central defence. This remains unconfirmed however and it remains to be seen whether Danny Morais will start and if Danilo Silva will play. Marcelo Cordeiro is expected to continue at left back in the absence of Kléber who is in South Africa with the Seleção.

In midfield, the creativity of D’Alessandro will be sorely missed with the Argentine failing to recover from a tendon problem in time. One of Inter’s most important players in the Copa do Brasil and match winner against Flamengo in the quarter final - Andrezinho, spoke of the pressure going into tonight’s game.

“I cannot wait for the game to start. The anxiety is great. To play in the final of the Copa do Brasil is an ambition of any player. I want to give my maximum”, explained Andrezinho.

Magrão is expected to start after training yesterday despite concerns over an arm injury with Sandro and Guiñazu likely to complete the midfield.

Top scorer this year Taison is expected to start after being a substitute in last weekends draw with Vitória and will play alongside powerful forward Alecsandro who replaces Nilmar (also with the Seleção).

Along with Inter, Corinthians also completed their state championship without defeat although they were defeated by Inter earlier this season in the Brasileirão after Nilmar’s wonder goal.

Boosted by the availability of Ronaldo who is thought to of recovered from a virus, Corinthians coach Mano Menezes is only without left back André Santos who is away with the Brazilian squad.

CORINTHIANS: Felipe; Alessandro, Chicão, Willian, Marcelo Oliveira; Cristian, Elias, Douglas, Dentinho, Jorge Henrique, Ronaldo

INTER: Lauro; Danilo Silva, Índio, Álvaro, Marcelo Cordeiro; Sandro, Guiñazu, Magrão, Andrezinho; Taison, Alecsandro

Tite ponders defensive change

As Inter undergo their final preparations behind closed doors ahead of tomorrow’s first leg final in São Paulo, reports suggest that Tite could make an unexpected change to the Inter defence.

Danilo Silva, considered first choice to play right back tomorrow night revealed to the press that he is unsure of his place in the side. Latest speculation suggests that Índio will play at right back, leaving Danny Morais to partner Álvaro in the centre of defence.

Tite is already without D’Alessandro whilst concerns are growing over the availability of Magrão who sustained an arm injury in training yesterday. Glaydson is expected to start if Magrão fails to recover in time.

Inter will fly to São Paulo from Porto Alegre’s Salgado Filho airport later this evening.

Rosinei expected to complete Fluminense move

Rosinei is expected to join Fluminense once his loan contract with Inter expires on the 20th June.

Décio Berman, Rosinei’s agent, spoke to Rio based radio station ‘Rádio Brasil’ and revealed that Rosinei “was honoured by Carlos Alberto Parreira’s interest” and are in ongoing negotiations with Spanish club Real Murcia.

Flu coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has also today spoken of his interest in bring former Seleção full back Roberto Carlos back to Brazil.

Picture: Rosinei expected to join Laranjeiras based Fluminense

D’Alessandro loses fitness race

Andrés D’Alessandro has been ruled out of tomorrow’s Copa do Final against Corinthians.

Confirmation confirming the D’Alessandro’s unavailability broke late yesterday as the Argentine returned to full training after suffering with a tendon problem in his left leg.

The club’s medical department ruled D’Alessandro out on the grounds that he would not be at peak physical condition for the game with just only two days of full training going into the first leg of final.

Meanwhile, Magrão is not expected to be a doubt after he picked up a knock in training yesterday. Inter’s medical director Pablo Rabello revealed that the player would undergo a scan purely as a precaution but claimed the injury “does not seem to be nothing serious”.

Inter reserves held as Vitória take draw from Beira-Rio

Inter have slipped off the top of the Brasileirão table after a reserve Colorado side drew 0-0 with Vitória at the Beira-Rio last night.

After a scrappy opening exchange between the two sides, Vitória came closest to opening the scoring midway through the half as reserve goalkeeper Michel Alves was at full stretch to deal with Roger’s deceiving cross-cum-shot.

Despite efforts from Talles Cunha and Giuliano, Inter were unable to threaten Vitória’s Viáfara. The visitors again came close to scoring, shortly after the half hour mark, as Vanderson struck the post with a shot from outside the box. At the other end of the field, Inter did finally manage to work goalkeeper Viáfara as Talles Cunha’s shot across goal forced the Colombian to save well.

Vitória again continued to show their attacking intentions in the second half. Michel Alves could only push Uelinton’s long range free kick over the bar as Apodi continued to impress down the right hand side.

As Vitória continued to threaten, Taison was brought on for Talles Cunha. The substitutes’ first chance of the game came when Andrezinho did well to pull back a ball across goal which fell to Taison at the edge of box but the Colorado top scorer could only hit the ball over the bar in a move which summarized Inter’s evening.

As the match drew to a close, Vitória’s Unelinton picked up his second yellow card after clattering into Taison and was dismissed.

Inter UK – 1 Year today / 1 Anos!

14th June 2008, a year ago today, Inter were just recovering from the departure of Fernandão and the arrival of a new coach – Tite. It was also the first day of my blog Inter UK, the first English language dedicated to the famous red shirt of Sport Club Internacional.

During this time I have been contacted by many wonderful Colorado’s who share a great passion. I thank everyone who has helped me, shared their opinions and visited the blog over the last year. I never expected that an English language blog about Inter would become so popular.

The aim of the blog is to share the club’s rich history and culture to the English speaking world and I still have the dream of one day being at the Beira-Rio to watch Inter with all the Colorado’s!

Anyway to celebrate the blog’s first birthday, I am going to be holding a competition.

The winner to email me the correct answer to the competition will win a Wales football shirt. I will buy and post this myself to anywhere in the world!

The competition is free to enter but you MUST email the answer to interuk@hotmail.com by midnight 20th June (UK time).

The question to win the Wales football shirt is this-

What UK club did D’Alessandro previously play for:
a) Arsenal
b) Chelsea
c) Portsmouth

Inter v Vitória

Inter must put their Copa do Brasil preparations aside today as Vitória visit the Beira-Rio (18:30 local time) to face a reserve Inter side in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Tite finds himself without four players as Lauro and Guiñazu are suspended whilst Kléber and Nilmar are away with the Seleção for the Confederations Cup as he looks to pick an entire reserve side with just Bolívar Sandro and Taison involved. Only Bolívar, who is suspended for the final, is expected to start.

The remainder of the team have all had first team experience this year although substitute goalkeeper Michel Alves and experienced central defender Gonazalo Sorondo have been restricted in their appearances. Young forward Talles Cunha is thought to be starting up front alongside Alecsandro. Left back Marcelo Cordeiro meanwhile will face his former club for the first time tonight after joining Inter from Vitória at the start of the year.

Vitória arrive in Porto Alegre having made a good start to the Brasileirão and are currently occupy third place in the table but are however without their suspended top scorer Neto Baiano who has already scored 21 goals this season. Coach Paulo César Carpegiani is expected to start with Adriano and Roger up front.

INTER: Michel Alves; Bolívar, Sorondo, Danny Morais, Marcelo Cordeiro; Maycon, Glaydson, Andrezinho, Giuliano; Talles Cunha, Alecsandro

VITÓRIA: Viáfara; Anderson Martins, Wallace, Victor Ramos; Apodi, Vanderson, Uelinton, Leandro Domingues, William; Adriano, Roger

D’Alessandro to undergo fitness test

D’Alessandro is expected to undergo a fitness test later this morning as the Argentine recovers from a tendon problem.

The club’s medical staff will reevaluate D’Alessandro’s recovery as the club tries to nurture him back to full fitness ahead of Wednesday’s Copa do Brasil final against Corinthians.

D’Alessandro last featured for Inter in the semi-final second leg against Coritiba.

Bolívar negotiations continue

Negotiations to secure the future of Bolívar continued yesterday as the club’s directors met with Neco Crine, Bolívar’s agent.

Inter are thought to face competition to extend the stay of the on loan defender who is also attracting interest from São Paulo, Mexican side Club América and clubs in Eastern Europe.

Bolívar is said to be keen to remain at the Beira-Rio although Inter are unable to purchase the player outright from Monaco who own him.

Following the meeting it is now thought Neco Crine will return to France and try to negotiate an early release from contract which would allow Bolívar to join Inter on a permanent deal. It is unlikely Monaco will agree to release Bolívar with the possibility of other clubs being prepared to purchase him.

Carvalho plays down Rafael Carioca links / On loan Ramón rejects €2 million Euro offer

Fernando Carvalho has played down suggestions that Inter are looking to sign former Grêmio midfielder Rafael Carioca who currently plays for Spartak Moscow.

Guaíba Radio reported yesterday that Inter had targeted the 19 year old, Rio born midfielder after the player returned to Brazil without permission from his club to visit his sick mother.

Inter’s vice president Carvalho moved quickly to dispel any speculation however, explaining that “it is not a position where Inter need players”.

Rafael Carioca is expected to face disciplinary action from Spartak Moscow, who also have former Inter midfielder Alex.

Meanwhile Inter owned left back Ramón has rejected an approach from an unnamed European club.

Ramón 21, is currently on loan to Vasco da Gama where his performances at the São Januário have attracted interested from Europe with Inter reportedly accepting a €2 million offer for the player.

However, Inter president Vitório Píffero has confirmed that Ramón has indicated his desire to remain at Vasco until the end of the season and is expected to return to Inter in 2010.

Inter UK Feature

In his third article for Inter UK, regular contributor Ronald Gordo shares a superbly well written piece about the Gaúcho history with an analogical look at next week’s Copa do Brasil final with Corinthians.

This blog completes it’s first year in good times - Times of war.

At the beginning, in the 17th century, Rio Grande do Sul was a empty country in the border between the colonies of Portugal and Spain. In the 19th century, at the end of successive wars, the place was falling to Portugal (and then to Brazil), but this relationship has always been troubled.

In 1835, angry with high taxes and constant levy (Rio Grande do Sul supplies 90% of Brazilian soldiers), the Gaúcho’s started a war of independence, "Guerra dos Farrapos" (or "War of Tatters", the name came from poverty of Gaúcho soldiers.)

In this fight, with the help of few Argentine soldiers and an Italian general (Giuseppe Garibaldi), people from Rio Grande do Sul faced the highest populated country and the largest army in all of America... and we did not lose. After ten years of fighting, the exhausted Brazilian Empire acknowledged they would not win and offered an agreement.

Negotiations closed the war but not the enmity. For one reason or another, new wars occurred in 1893, 1926, 1927, 1930 and 1932. In all, Gaúcho’s faced mainly "Paulista’s", the people from São Paulo's State, the industrial, richest, highest popuated and most acculturated in Brazil. We envied their wealth and they envy our liberty and way of life.

Even today, Gaúcho’s celebrate the "War of Tatters" at every opportunity. Even in the Beira-Rio, people sing the old hymn of Farrapos and not the official Brazilian anthem. Every year, in September 20, people wear cavalry boots, hats, "bombachas" (large trousers) or "xiripas" (a dress of ancient South American Indians) in horse parades, dances and parties as all Gaúcho’s realise that we are not normal Brazilian people.

Now, in the last games in Copa do Brasil, Internacional faces our old enemy, the Corinthians from São Paulo.

The historic rivalry was increased in 2005, when a referee's scandal gave the Brazilian championship to Corinthians. Two years later, Brazilian police intercepted and recorded a phone call of a gangster to the Corinthians former president, where he confessed the crime. In the 2007 Brasileirão , Internacional lost their last match against Goiás and Corinthians were relegated to the second division. All the fans (from Internacional and Corinthians) say it was revenge.

The Copa do Brasil final will not be football match, but war. No matter if Internacional has only one Gaúcho player (Bolívar), no matter if Corinthians has a Gaúcho coach (Mano Menezes), no matter if hundreds of Internacional members are "Paulistas", it will be a war.

Using balls as weapons, kicks as blows, with passion but without violence, led by a Piffero and Tite (both descendants of Italians) and with the aid of the legitimate representatives from Argentina's people, D'Alessandro and Guiñazu, the Red Nation of Rio Grande do Sul go to war.

As say the Hymn of Farrapos, may our achievements serve as a model for whole Earth.

Have a happy and lucky week... you'll need...

Inter UK News round up

Tite has given a strong indication to the side he will select for Sunday’s Brasileirão clash with Vitória, after working with what appeared to be his preferred starting eleven in training yesterday afternoon.

Inter have growing list of absentee’s as a combination of international call ups, injury, suspension and fitness causing Tite a selection headache.

Reserve goalkeeper Michel Alves and former Vitória full back Marcelo Cordeiro are among those expected to play on Sunday.

Suggested team: Michel Alves, Álvaro, Danny Morais, Marcelo Cordeiro, Maycon, Glaydson, Giuliano, Andrezinho, Talles Cunha, Alecsandro

D’Alessandro could play some part against Vitória and is expected to undergo a fitness test as he continues to recover from injury.

It is unclear whether Gonazalo Sorondo will be available after Inter’s executive director Newton Drummond confirmed that he has been given leave to attend to commitments in Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Luis Bolaños is expected to become available to Tite next week as the Ecuadorian completes a conditioning programme with Elio Carravetta who confirmed, “Next Monday he will probably be of the disposal of the technical commission”. Bolaños however has not yet been registered by Inter with the CBF so is currently not registered to play.

Reports also suggest that Inter are close to agreeing the signing of Criciúma’s young left back Lima.

The 18 year old has been liked with Inter previously and is expected to complete a move within the next week which will see him play in the Inter B team with the possibility of him being slowly introduced into the first team.

Nilmar scores winning goal as Seleção defeat Paraguay

Nilmar started and scored the winning goal as Brazil came from a goal behind to defeat Paraguay 2-1 in their latest World Cup qualifier.

Inter’s left back Kléber also continued in the side after playing in Brazil’s win against Uruguay on the weekend with another solid performance in the number 6 shirt.

Paraguay took an unexpected lead in Recife as Salvador Cabanas’ 26th minute freekick took a slight deflection off Elano. Robinho (41) leveled shortly before halftime after latching onto Daniel Alves’ pass into deep into the box.

Nilmar (49) then put the Seleção in front minutes into the second half finishing from close range to secure the Dunga’s side three points.

Brazil now top the South American qualifying standings with 27 points from 14 games.

1000th blog post!

Sorry, no exciting news about Inter this time but an important post in the blog's short history!

Inter UK is almost one year old and it’s been a real pleasure to write about and share the passion of such a wonderful club.

The blog’s first birthday is actually on Sunday 14th June and I will be holding a very special competition to celebrate the first year of Inter UK!

As always, if you have suggestions/requests as to improve the blog then please let me know!

MUITO OBRIGADO,

Matt

Nilmar can start for Seleção

Nilmar is in contention to start for Brazil in tonight’s World Cup Qualifier against Paraguay.

Having been including in Dunga’s squad for the qualifiers against Uruguay, Paraguay and the Confederations Cup, Inter’s 24 year old striker could start tonight in Recife as Luís Fabiano is unavailable through suspension.

Dunga is expected to chose between either Nilmar or another Inter youth product, Alexandre Pato.

Nilmar has previously made 10 appearances for the Seleção and has been in devastating form for Inter this year, scoring 13 goals.

Mexican interests thwarts Bolívar hopes

Inter are facing an increasing struggle to keep hold of another on loan player with Zero Hora reporting today that Mexican club América are to enter negotiations to sign Bolívar.

The defender’s loan with Inter expires at the end of the month and Inter are keen to renegotiate an extension to the loan deal but today’s edition of the Porto Alegre newspaper claims that Jesús Ramírez, coach of América was at the Estádio Mineirão on Sunday to watch Bolívar in the 1-1 with Cruzeiro.

Bolívar is currently owned by A.S Monaco who would prefer to negotiate a permanent deal for the 28 year old. This could prove advantageous to América who would be able to afford both Bolívar’s transfer fee and wages.

Official representatives from América are expected to travel to France this week to enter negotiations as serious doubts emerge over Bolívar’s future at the Beira-Rio.

Inter are also thought to face competition in re-negotiating the loan signing of midfielder Rosinei who is being closely followed by Fluminense.

Inter prepare for Vitória with growing absentee list

The Inter first team will resume light training this afternoon after being giving recovering yesterday from Sunday’s draw against Cruzeiro. However, Tite’s selection headache is expected to continue for next weekend’s match with Vitória as Lauro and Guiñazu are added to the growing absentee list.
Lauro is ruled out of next Sunday’s match after his red card against Cruzeiro whilst Guiñazu is also suspended after collecting his third yellow card.

They join Nilmar and Kléber who are unavailable with the Seleção whilst it is not yet confirmed whether Álvaro and D’Alessandro will be fit enough to return to the side.

Flu to step up efforts to sign Rosinei

Zero Hora is reporting that Fluminense are set to step up their efforts to sign Inter’s on loan midfielder Rosinei.

The midfielder’s loan with Inter ends this month and it is thought that the club are keen to negotiate a new deal with Murcia to extend Rosinei’s stay at the Beira-Rio.

However, Fluminense coach Carlos Alberto Parreira who has already declared his interest in Rosinei is expected to further turn his attentions on the player after Flu were priced out of a deal involving Grêmio’s Souza who is on owned by Paris S.G.

There had been recent speculation that Flu were also interested in Inter's former Copa Libertadores winning midfielder Tinga, who is currently playing in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.

Early Magrão strike not enough as Inter draw

Inter’s 100% record in the Brasileirão ended last night as Inter were held to a 1-1 draw against Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte.

Despite missing four first team players with Kléber, Álvaro, D’Alessandro and Nilmar all unavailable, Inter got off to dream start at the Estádio Mineiro as Magrão (5) powered in Andrezinho’s corner to score his first goal of the 2009 Brasileirão, giving Inter a perfect start.

Cruzeiro almost equalised shortly after, but Inter were fortunate when Jancarlos struck the post from a freekick. However both teams were forced to change their gameplan when each had a player sent off. Cruziero’s top scorer Kléber and Inter ‘keeper Lauro were both issued straight red cards for what appeared to be a minor altercation during a Cruzeiro corner. Alecsandro, formerly of Cruzeiro was sacrificed as substitute goalkeeper Michel Alves was brought on as both teams spurned chances to score in the first half.

With Inter scoring early in the first half, Cruzeiro followed suit in the second. Wellington Paulista (46) levelled for the home side with a close range finish, after Michel Alves pushed out Zé Carlos’ effort.

Despite being down to ten men, both teams searched for a second goal as Lauro was forced to save well from Bernardo’s long rage strke. Substitute Giuliano came closest to scoring a second Inter goal when he was put through on goal by a defence splitting ball from Taison, however Cruzeiro goalkeeper Fábio reacted quickly to save well at the feet of the 19 year attacking midfielder.

Despite losing their 100% record Inter remain undefeated and top the Brasileirão. Inter have taken points of yet another title contender despite having four first team players out and have earned a credible point from a stadium where Inter have not won a Brasileirão match against Cruzeiro in 22 years.

Brasileirão Round Up

Following Inter’s well earned point against Cruzeiro, the Colorado remain top of the championship after five rounds.

Inter are now two points ahead of second placed Atlético-MG who continued their recent run of form with a convincing 4-0 victory away to Atlético Paranaense. Junior, Diego Tardelli and a late brace from Eder Luis all scored for Atlético-MG in a result which leaves Atlético Paranaense bottom of the championship. The result confirms a disappointing start for the Paraná state club’s as Coritiba also find themselves in the bottom two following a defeat to Corinthians on Thursday night.

Elsewhere in the Clássico Vovô, Brazilian football’s oldest derby, Fred’s goal was enough for Fluminense to secure a 1-0 win over Botafogo. Meanwhile the Brasileirão’s other big Rio club Flamengo continue to struggle any consistency as they fell to a 4-2 to Sport in Recife.

In São Paulo, a last minute goal from Maurício Ramos saw Palmeiras comeback from a goal down to defeat Vitória at the Palestra Itália and São Paulo continued their disappointed start as they were held to a 0-0 draw with Avaí.

Inter announce 90,000th sócio

Inter have taken a step closer to achieving their goal of reaching 100,000 sócios by the end of this year after the club confirmed that it now has 92,000 official members, the largest in South America.

On 31st May, Jéssica Hoepers Muller registered online becoming the 90,000th sócio and was yesterday presented with a commemorative shirt by president Vitório Píffero.

Jéssica originally from Florianopolis, Santa Catarina has been living in Porto Alegre for two years and was encouraged by her husband Lucas to become an official member of Internacional.

“We are close to exceeding some of the greatest clubs in world football such as Real Madrid for example. Currently, we are ranked 8th. The sócios’ are the biggest source of revenue to the club”, explained Vitório Píffero.

If any Inter directors are reading this, WHY can’t non-Brazilian’s sign up?

Inter prepare for fixture backlog

Fitness coach Fabio Mahseredjian has revealed Inter’s approach for the next month in which Inter must play a mammoth nine matches with four of which being cup finals.

Speaking to Bandeirantes Radio he explained, “It will certainly be a marathon and in the next week it will be important to evaluate the players condition and allow them to recover. We have two final in this period and therefore we have to remember that we not prepare just 11 players but an entire squad. If field the same team in nine games will have ill effects. What we have to do is use a team of 20 -23 players who have been playing since the beginning of the Brasileirão. This is the reason why we are critical of using the term ‘reserves’. We do not have reserve players but a squad.”

Inter’s schedule:
07/06 Cruzeiro v Inter
14/06 Inter v Vitória
17/06 Corinthians v Inter (Copa do Brasil Final 1st Leg)
21/06 Flamengo v Inter
25/06 Inter v LDU Quito (Recopa Final 1st Leg)
28/06 Inter v Coritiba
01/07 Inter v Corinthians (Copa do Brasil Final 2nd Leg)
05/07 Náutico v Inter
09/07 LDU Quito v Inter (Recopa Final 2nd Leg)

Meanwhile, Zero Hora is reports the future of on loan duo Bolívar and Rosinei could be resolved shortly.

Inter UK Feature

Making his second appearance for Inter UK is Ronaldo Gordo, a Colorado living in Rio Grande do Sul.

This week Ronaldo talks about the future of the Beira-Rio. Meanwhile you can also view my latest blog in Portugese today on Globo Esporte - Inter Blog do Torcedor.

Many thanks to Ronald, happy reading!

Last weekend, when Joseph Blatter (Fifa's President) chose Porto Alegre and another 11 cities to host 2014 World Cup, he give a gift to all Colorados.

Yes! Six games of 2014 World Cup will playing in "Gigante da Beira-Rio" Stadium ("Giant on the River Banks" Stadium). By proximity, the Argentina's team will be in Porto Alegre.

In fact, The Eucaliptos, Inter's old stadium, host two matches of the FIFA World Cup in 1950 - Mexico vs Yugoslavia and Mexico vs Switzerland. But - after 70 years - it is not easy to talk to who built the Eucaliptos.

The Beira-Rio is a different subject. All Colorados over 50 helped to build the Beira-Rio by donating bricks, iron bars, and cement. The poor people (who could not donate anything) helped working, puting bricks and carrying bags. There was no public money or rich benefactor, only the efforts of Colorados. My old father himself became a member to help with money.

So, the stadium itself is a source of pride permanent.

To host the World Cup, the Beira-Rio will require some referbishment and modernization, mainly on access roads and parking areas in the nearby streets. In addition, the stadium will be covered and earn more 15 thousand posts. So, we will be free of cold wind from Guaiba River.

The old Eucaliptos will be sold and - again - everything will be done only with our cash.

Meanwhile, Gremio (Inter's rival) promises to build an Arena to host at least one game in World Cup, because her old stadium is falling to pieces. In forecasts, media talk the Arena's project will receive public money and it will be built by a contractor of bad reputation. In Brazil, everything is possible... But, in times of global crisis, is a bad thing depends on unrealible partners or ever little government's money.

Arena is Latin word for sand. The same sand that children use to build castles on the beach. Indeed, the castle of sand is a symbol of universal childhood dream. The name was well chosen...

I was two years old at the inauguration of the Beira-Rio... at that time, I was certainly more concerned about the hot-dog and coke and I did not know the importance of that moment... but i was there... and i'll be there when the FIFA's 2014 Word Cup start in our old new home.

As always, the Inter's stadium will be the home of the best football of the world.

Have a real nice week... and start to save money to buy your tickets...

Copa do Brasil to be decided at Beira-Rio

The CBF have confirmed this afternoon that the decisive second leg of the 2009 Copa do Brasil final will be played at the Estádio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre.

The news will give Inter a huge boast as they turn their attentions to the first leg which kicks off in under two weeks’ time at Corinthians’ home - the Estádio Pacaembu.

Second leg, Wednesday 1st July

Meanwhile, the Inter squad landed at 11:30am this morning back in Porto Alegre after confirming their place in the final for the first time since winning the competition in 1992.

One of Inter’s most influential players in Curitiba – Lauro, stated the importance of the final.

“Now zero’s are everything. All campaign it’s about goals for and goals against. In the final it’s 11 against 11”, declared the Inter goalkeeper.

Inter make Copa do Brasil final despite defeat

Internacional have made it through to the 2009 Copa do Brasil final after Coritiba were unable to turn around a 3-1 deficit from the first leg.

A 1-0 victory to Coritiba at the Estádio Couto Pereira saw the tie finish 3-2 to Inter on aggregate. Under pressure for much of the game, Inter relied on the impressive Lauro to keep Coritiba and finished the match with ten men after Bolívar recieved his second yellow card late on.

Inter will now face Corinthians in the final who defeated Vasco on away goals following a 0-0 (1-1 agg) draw at the Pacaembu.

An emotional D’Alessandro spoke to the press after the game.

“I am in Porto Alegre less than a year and to already be playing in my third final is very important. We did not play well, we lost, but with the advantage we had from the Beira-Rio, we made it through. The final will be different we wait to play the first leg away and the second at home”, declared the Argentine.

Coritiba v Inter

Coritiba host Internacional tonight (21:50 local time) in the Copa do Brasil second leg semi final. Inter in a strong position to advance to the final, having defeated Coritiba 3-1 in the last week’s first leg.

Even a 1-0 defeat in the Paraná state’s capital, Curitiba will see Inter through to face either Corinthians or Vasco in the final.

Over thirty thousand supporters are expected in the Estadio Couto Pereira tonight and in the build up to the game there have been suggestions that Inter fans could face violence from the home supporters. Despite the suggestions, Inter have been quick to play down the possibility of any trouble.

Meanwhile, Inter’s training preparations ahead of the match have all been conducted in public leaving little doubt onhow Tite will approach the game.

Inter are without Kléber and Nilmar who are with the Brazil squad but the return of Guiñazu will be welcomed as the captain becomes available after suspension. Marcelo Cordeiro (left back) will replace Kléber whilst Alecsandro will continue up front alongside Taison.

Having played a reserve team against Avaí on the weekend, Tite will recall all of his first team regulars and the Inter coach is confident that his side are focuses solely on achieving a positive result-

“We have to play with the same naturalness as we do at home in the Beira-Rio. We will not allow our advantage to determine how we play it will not work in this type of games. The Coritiba supporters will try and pressure us but they will not take the ball away from the feet of our players. Our focus will be in the game”.

Marcelo Cordeiro and Alecsandro set for chance

Marcelo Cordeiro and Alecsandro are both expected to start in Inter’s crucial semi final second leg away to Coritiba tomorrow night.

The pair are likely to replace Kléber and Nilmar who are both away with the Seleção.
“I come in to have an increasing role this season, with a good run of games. But I have much to still show. It’s very good to be playing in a decisive match such as this”, commented the 28 year old left back.

Meanwhile, Alecsandro also shared his enthusiasm about playing tomorrow.

“I have a personal goal that I will disclose at the end of the year. It depends very much on how many games I play or come on in the second half. The certainty is that I feel things are going very well for me at Inter”.

Inter travel to Curitiba yesterday evening ahead of tomorrow’s semi final.

São Paulo join race for Ibson

It is thought that competition to sign on loan Flamengo midfielder Ibson is heating up with São Paulo the latest club to show an interest in the Porto owned 25 year old.

Inter are reported to be amongst the favorites to sign the player with the Sonda group keen to agree a deal with F.C Porto although Grêmio are also rumored to be interested along with Flamengo who are keen to keep the player long term. It is thought that several European clubs are also monitoring developments.

Meanwhile, Flamengo director Plínio Serpa Pinto was in Portugal this weekend but it is suggested that he did not meet representatives from Porto who are unhappy with Flamengo regarding an outstanding debt.

Ibson’s loan contract with Flamengo expires on the 5th July the player is said to be training separately from the Flamengo squad until his future is resolved.

Talles Cunha handed Seleção boost

20 year old Inter forward Talles Cunha could be in contention for a place in the Seleção squad for the Under 20 World Cup which is being held later this year.

Ironically, Talles Cunha who scored his second senior goal on the weekend is set to benefit from the exclusion of another Inter player – Walter, who is unlikely to recover in time from a knee injury.

Talles Cunha joined Inter in August 2008 after being spotted playing in the Guarani juniores. His registration is currently equally shared by Inter and the Sonda group.

Reports suggest that the CBF have already contacted Inter for information on Talles Cunha and he is thought to be on a list of around 40 names for the tournament which begins in September.

Brazil are placed in Group E with Costa Rica, Czech Republic and Australia.

Inter see of Avaí to remain top of Série A

A 2-1 victory for Inter last night maintains the club’s 100% record with a three point lead at the top of the Série A table.

Forwards Talles Cunha and Alecsandro both got onto the score sheet in a match which saw both teams finish with ten men at a cold Beira-Rio.

With Inter’s Copa do Brasil commitments becoming increasingly important; Inter again fielded a mixed side with only Lauro, Kléber and Andrezinho starting from the team which defeated Coritiba last Wednesday.

After a positive start from Inter, both teams looked positive going forward as Alecsandro and Avaí midfielder Marcus Winícius both had early chances. Inter’s first goal came from youngster Talles Cunha (15) who managed to find enough space from Giuliano’s flick on inside the crowded Avaí box following Andrezinho’s deep free kick.

Both teams continued to create opportunities with Avaí captain Marquinhos pulling the strings for the visitors whilst for Inter, Alecsandro had a penalty appeal turned down.

The second half continued with both teams trying to play open football but Inter’s night was soured as Maycon was harshly sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the evening. Avaí’s advantage did not lost long however as the referee dismissed defender Emerson just minutes later after he too received a second yellow after bringing down Alecsandro.

With both teams down to ten men, Inter doubled their advantage through Alecsandro (61). Kléber and Giuliano linked up well down Inter’s left hand side before the Seleção full back saw his cross turned in by Alecsandro from close range.

With little time remaining, Avaí were given a lifeline as Danilo Silva was adjudged to of fouled a Avaí player inside the box. Substitute Lima (87) very calmly slotted the penalty past Lauro to pull a goal back for the visitors although it was not to be enough against the Colorado who held out to maintain their 100% record in the Brasileirão.
